Westlife: we can’t wait to get to Cork

WHEN Westlife were approached to play this year’s Live At The Marquee, band member Shane Filan said that the lads did not think twice about the opportunity to come to Cork.

“The last time we played Cork City was at a Beat On The Street about 11-years ago so we jumped at the chance to return for a headline gig,” Shane told the Corkman during their recent visit to Cork.

“We know other acts who have played the venue before and the good things they have said about it. Having seen the list of artists who have played there before, and the line up for this year, we are delighted to be a part of the whole thing”.

It is shaping up to be yet another big year for the four lads who recently announced details of a 30 + date European tour and are revelling in the success of their 10th studio album, ‘Where We Are’, which has enjoyed global sales in excess of 450,000 units since its release in October, 2009.

Shane said that the band have lost none of the drive that propelled them to success in the early 1990s and made them arguably the most successful Irish band of all time.

He did, however, admit that the year long break the band took prior to recording ‘Where We Are’ was badly needed after almost a decade at the top. “We had 10 years of working flat out and needed the break to chill out and take stock of what we have achieved. The break helped us to renew our energy levels and we are enjoying ourselves now as much as we ever did,” said Shane.
The enthusiasm for what they do has, said Shane, been a key element behind the phenomenal success that the band has achieved.

“We still love it. It is our job and of course with any job there are good and bad times. That said, we get to travel the world and do the most amazing things. There are not many people who get the chance to sing in front of thousands of people and none of us take that for granted,” he said.

“At the start we thought we might have three of fours years, but to still be there almost 12 years later is amazing.”

Given the fact that the band have sold out venues across the world and enjoyed global sales in excess of 40 million records it would be easy for the band to take their success for granted. However, Shane admitted that the lads do get quite apprehensive prior to an album launch or a tour.

“We were really happy with the new album but it was no different to our previous ones in that we were very nervous about how it would be received. The same is true when we announce gigs and tours in that we are always keeping an eye on how the tickets sell. We are always a bit apprehensive but I suppose that is part of the buzz,” he said.

Shane said that while he does enjoy the creative process behind making records in a studio, nothing could beat the feeling of playing in front of a live audience. “Ironically, The Marquee will be the smallest gig we have played for years but that does not mean we will be taking it for granted. Fans who will come along expecting to see a full-on Westlife gig will not be disappointed, I can guarantee that.”
