Worlds of politics and showbiz revving it up for 'You're A Star'

Fame game: Aine Ni Dhroighneain and RTE's Kathryn Thomas with Fair City actress Una Crawford O'Brien at the You're a Star launch yesterday.

ANOTHER batch of politicians, actors and media commentators will battle it out on this year's 'Charity You're A Star'.

RTE yesterday announced a string of well-known faces from the worlds of entertainment, sport and politics will be singing for survival in the coming weeks.

In an effort to up the ante on the show's successful debut year in 2005, the programme's producers have increased the number of acts to 10, and an extra two episodes have been added.

Derek Mooney will present while the warring trio of judges Brendan O'Connor, Linda Martin and Louis Walsh will be on hand to put the contestants through their paces.

"The show is all about fun and going mental. These celebrities have no careers to speak of and this year there are four politicians to kick the **** out off instead of one, I'm looking forward to it," said Brendan O'Connor.

Despite his cynicism O'Connor continued to say that the RTE sports commentator, Shane O'Donoghue, is in with a good chance of collecting the prize money on the final night, a thought echoed by Westlife manager, Louis Walsh.

"If I was a betting man I would put my money on Shane O'Donoghue. He's got a great voice and should do well. These celebrities think they can sing but we're going to prove if they can sing or not," said Walsh. However, O'Donoghue was not as confident about his singing ability and is playing down his chances.

"I have very low expectations of how far I'll go or how well I'll do. My real priority is raising money for the Marie Keating Foundation," he said. Apart from O'Donoghue, competing this year will be RTE presenter Kathryn Thomas, former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland player, John Aldridge, Dublin tailor Louis Copeland, soccer manager Roddy Collins, model Gail Kaneswaren, TG4 Weatherman Daithi O'Se, Fair City's Una Crawford-O'Brien and Bryan Murray, Aine Ni Dhroughneain from Ros na Run, politicians Billy Kelleher, Frank Feighan, Dan Boyle and Michael McCarthy, as well as the Fair City actor Maclean Burke.

The show will be broadcasted on RTE1 from Saturday July 29 to Sunday August 13.
