Westlife see off Oasis in chart race Westlife have pulled off a big shock by beating rock legends Oasis, The Beatles and U2 to the top spot in the album chart. The Irish boy band sold 219,000 copies of 'The Love Album', which features cheesy covers of Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' and 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' by The Righteous Brothers. Meanwhile, Oasis were 6,000 copies behind with 'Stop the Clocks' - a collection of the best songs of their career. The 'Love' album of Beatles remixes finished third in the chart race, while U2's new singles collection 'U218' finished fourth. Westlife's Nicky Byrne said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be number one. It means so much to us. We have the best fans in the world and we want to thank them for all their continued support." The band's manager Louis Walsh said: "It just shows there is true, genuine demand for Westlife when they can beat such amazing legends as the Beatles, U2 and Oasis. "Westlife are up there with the best. This is their eighth album and proves there is still a long way to go for them. "I can't tell you how proud I am of the boys. They have got the best and most dedicated fans in the world." Almost one million albums were sold by the top five artists this week making it the biggest week of sales in 2006 so far. But Westlife's first week sales were dwarfed by Arctic Monkeys, who shifted 350,000 copies of their debut album last February. UK top 10 albums: 1. Westlife - The Love Album 2. Oasis - Stop The Clocks 3. The Beatles - Love 4. U2 - U218 Singles 5. George Michael - Twenty Five 6. Jamiroquai - High Times - Singles 1992-2006 7. Girls Aloud - The Sound Of - The Greatest Hits 8. Sugababes - Overloaded - The Singles Collection 9. Razorlight - Razorlight 10. Angelis - Angelis source:virgin.net |

Boy Bands Rule We here at Showbiz HQ have got a little nostalgic. And it's no wonder looking at the music charts... The boy band still reigns - hurrah. Take That have shown that they are back for good with their first number one in a decade. Their single, Patience, rose three places to hit the top of the charts. Cast your minds back to those heady Take That days and you'll remember that the boys' last number one was How Deep Is Your Love in 1996. It doesn't end there though... boy band pop domination is all over the album chart as well, with Westlife bagging top spot in the album chart. Westlife To nab the honours they had to fend off heavyweights, including Oasis, The Beatles and U2. Westlife member Nicky Byrne said: "We have the best fans in the world and we want to thank them for all their continued support." The band's manager Louis Walsh said: "It just shows there is true, genuine demand for Westlife, when they can beat such amazing legends as the Beatles, U2 and Oasis. "I can't tell you how proud I am of the boys. They have got the best and most dedicated fans in the world." |

The Top 40 is a good place to be if you're in a boy/man band this week... Take That have done it and bagged another No 1 with comeback tune 'Patience' - a whopping ten years after they bowed out of the pop scene. The Manchester four piece, who are doing two huge signings in London and Manchester today (November 27) to celebrate the launch of album Beautiful World, see off competition from Akon and Eminem and Emma Bunton who returns to the charts at No 3 with 'Downtown'. Meanwhile Take That's old buddy Robbie has slipped out of the top 10 down to No 15 with 'Lovelight'. And in the album charts there's more boyband action - with Westlife doing the what the tabloids dreaded and beating Oasis to the top spot. At the end of play, the 'Loife's 'The Love Album' had sold about 15,000 copies more than Oasis's 'Stop The Clocks'. Also propping 'em up are the Beatles' 'Love' at 3 and U2's U218 Singles at 4. Bet there are a lot of sore heads in Camp That and 'Loife this morning... To watch the latest MTV News bulletins in Overdrive, click on the link above... Source:MTV |
