West Of Whatever (outtakes from a press con) ~ Manila Press Conference - 5 September 2006 At the Westlife press conference on Monday, so many rules were imposed on the media. Some were reasonable (“Please keep cell phones on silent mode”); others were overbearing (“Please don’t ask about one of the members’ sexuality”) and perplexing (“No picture-taking”). One rule (“Please put all recorders on the presidential table before the band comes out”) smacked of conceit because the subtext was that no one should approach the artists. A reporter was not about to be cowed. He outed himself as a devoted fan, asked three questions, then—protocol be damned—he walked up to the venerable presidential table to have his precious Westlife poster autographed, his hand pumped and his picture taken with the boys. As coup de grâce, he dished out a hefty portion of the band’s “If I Let You Go.” Surprise laugh A routine question resulted in unintended comedy. Asked which diva they would love to work with next, in light of a collaboration number with Diana Ross (“When You Tell Me That You Love Me,” in their latest album “Face to Face”), Shane Filan quipped: “Michael Jackson.” The entire room was in stitches. A perplexed Shane wondered, “Why are you laughing?” After the booboo was explained Shane backtracked: “Jackson’s a divo. I’d love to work with Streisand.” Mark Feehily, who is openly gay, laughed through the whole exchange. He discussed his own coming out of the closet, saying it “changed my life dramatically.” Westlife had a concert at the Big Dome that same night. Credit/Source: www.inq7.net |
