Boys are back in town TOP boy band Westlife brought Newmarket racecourse's series of summer concerts to a resounding close last night. A capacity crowd of 19,000 sang along to the band's hits at the finale of the seven Newmarket Nights, which combine an evening race meeting with a top pop show. Tickets for Westlife were sold out two months ago. Before going on stage they helped select the winner of the best-dressed lady contest and presented the overall winner, chosen from seven individual winners selected from the crowd at each of the Newmarket Nights, with a £1,000 voucher from fashion house Planet which sponsored the competition. The chart-topping band have already performed at nearby Audley End this summer and tonight were giving another racecourse concert - this time at Chester. This year's series of Newmarket Nights has been hailed as the most successful with three other capacity crowds - for 1990s chart-toppers Texas; last week's 10th annual show by Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and Ronan Keating's July appearance. Other near-capacity crowds were attracted by McFly and Status Quo. Series openers the Bootleg Beatles attracted the smallest crowd. Young classical singer Hayley Westenra has also performed at the racecourse at the Classic Fm Race Day. The Newmarket Nights concerts began in 1987 and in recent years have grown in popularity with more recent pop acts, including those which appeal to a younger audience. Gaynor Haxby, market manager for Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We're obviously delighted with how it's gone and the series has finished on a real high." Plans are already being made for the 2007 series of seven nights when racecourse chiefs are hoping to drop tribute bands from the line-up to concentrate on "genuine" pop acts. Next year the racecourse will offer free tickets for Saturday afternoon racing to anyone booking tickets for the Newmarket Nights. The offer is part of a policy to attract more people to the races. source:http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/lifestyle/arts_music/news/2006/08/19/9937ad49-b85b-40ca-b7f4-d160efc209a6.lpf |
