Nicky: “If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You, They’re Not Big Enough”

April 7, 2016 /

Nicky is on the cover of the latest VIP Magazine Issue, on newsstands now! He gave an amazing interview to Bianca about his upcoming debut album (apparently set to be released on May 6th), Eurovision prep and much more!

Bianca: Nicky Byrne doing the Eurovision. I have to admit, I’m a bit surprised.
Nicky: Truth is, I’m really patriotic, and that’s not just a line. I love when Conor McGregor fights, love when Ireland plays football and I grew up watching the Eurovision. I am also a very competitive person. When I finished playing football at 19, and then Westlife started, I did lose that competitive side that I craved. I don’t know if we’ll ever win the Eurovision again, but sure look, we’ll give it a shot.

What was Georgina’s response when you came home and said, ‘I think I might enter the Eurovision’?
I used to joke about it for years, I’d say to her, ‘I’m telling you Georgina, one year’ Georgina would win an Oscar for being the most supportive wife. Straight away she’d say: ‘Look, if you think you can do it, off you go.’ As the saying goes, if your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough. But like you, she’d be nervous for me. Strictly Come Dancing she watched behind her hands. I could see her in the audience cowering! But opportunities come along once in a lifetime and I’m a firm believer in taking them.

At home in Malahide, Co Dublin, do the three kids (Jay and Rocco, 8, Gia, 2) have Sunlight on constant playback?
Sort of! Gia – she’s quite a good little singer – she keeps correcting Georgina. ‘Mammy, that’s not how Sunlight is sung! She’s a great character; little drama schoolgirl on the way!

I’m surprised though, Nicky, that you’ve poked your finger back in the music pot, because I sensed you were done, and were much happier with the normalcy of a weekday radio show on 2FM.
You’re dead right. I left home at 16, played pro football for year, I came home when that didn’t work out, and within a year Westlife started, and then I was never home properly for years. Getting up every morning with Georgina, bringing the kids to school and going to work in the same place each day was brilliant. But I suppose, if you’ve been in that circus ring, it never leaves you. Do I want to go back on the road? No, but I think I’m at that point in my life when I can dip in and dip out of everything. I’ve made an album I love and if I never make another album again I’ll be happy.

So, what about the album due out May 6th. Who are you singing about?
There are a couple of slow ballads, a lovely lullaby about my daughter called Pretty, and then there’s Pop Machine, which is about being on the road with Westlife. All these things I could never have done in Westlife and whether I ever do them again on another album, who knows? This album will forever sit proudly to me. I actually can’t believe I’m talking like this, ‘this is me, this is my own album!’

Louis Walsh and the Westlife lads must be dying for a listen.
Probably. They would know me better, as a performer, than anyone else would. Probably even better than Georgina. I watch all their performances and I know what they’re going to say, if they mean it and if they don’t. I’d know by looking at them if they’re nervous. I know where the bodies are buried!

How would I know if you’re nervous?
I’m not going to tell you!

Markus Feehily played the 3Arena recently. Did you go to see him play?
No, I haven’t gone to see any of them, to be honest with you. I don’t go to see a lot of music. I don’t like going to concerts. There are loads of reasons for that, but one reason is because I have done it, and I find it hard to watch. And maybe I’m a bit jealous and want to be up there? I don’t know.

What do you think about Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy’s latest venue, Boyzlife?
I wish Keith and Brian the very best and I would never begrudge anybody going out there making a living and having a craic. But, without being rude to anybody, Westlife became a different band when Brian left. When five becomes four there’s no majority rule. We signed two or three renegotiations without Brian. We broke new territories without him. I wish Brian and Keith all the best, but it’s nothing to do with me.

I saw that you attended the Brit Awards recently. Did it feel odd being back?
No, it felt great. Maybe it’s an age thing – if I had done that on my own in my 20s, maybe I wouldn’t have felt the same? But I loved it. I think it comes with maturity.

Did becoming a parent mature you?
Yes, because you have to be responsible. But I think stepping out on my own after Westlife matures me more. Unlike Mark and Shane, I wasn’t the lead singer and I had to look after myself.

I love your radio show. You and your 2FM co-host Jenny Greene sound like you’re having a lot of fun.
And you can’t buy that, you can’t fake that, it’s luck. I wanted to be part of a show that sounded like fun, and it needs to be great fun to sound like great fun. Jenny and myself have a bit of craic.

Jenny must be very excited about her upcoming wedding to her partner of three years, Kelly Keogh.
She’s so excited. The wedding is in June. She’s off this week doing tasting and stuff.

Right, let’s get back to Eurovision and talk Johnny Logan! His famous white Eurovision suit was unforgettable. What are you wearing?
We’re going for the ‘pop rock’ look, because I think I have to be true to me. But I loved Johnny’s white suit. I remember when I first met him, it was like meeting Ireland’s Elvis! And I told him “where is the suit?” I think he said he still has it, and I told him it needed to be in a museum somewhere.

Westlife had some pretty memorable outfits too! Where are they?
Boxed up in my attic! All separated, highlighted, marked! Our ‘2002 Brit Award jacket’, ‘Red Boiler suits Uptown Girl. One day somebody can have them.

The kids for dress-up!
Halloween and fancy-dress parties sorted for life!

Speaking of matters sartorial, what about your Peter Mark VIP Style Award nomination?
I want to tweet about it, but I don’t want it to look like I’m canvassing for votes! I’d love to win it. I would, honest! But it’s a tough category! I am a previous winner you know? Most Stylish Man and Most Stylush Couple! I’m proof of those awards!

Earlier on, Nicky, you spoke about your competitive streak; does it put you under pressure? Because you never look like a lad that is under pressure…
The Eurovision will without a doubt put me under pressure! But there’s a part of me that needs pressure. Going over to do Strictly Come Dancing I had this amazing image in my head of winning! It didn’t happen, and that’s okay. You pick up yourself up and move on.

How are you going to feel standing up there on the Eurovision stage, all alone? I feel nervous for you!
I’m nervous for myself! But the song I can stand over, and I would never put myself forward if I didn’t believe in the song. This wasn’t Nicky in his garage trying to throw together some chords; this song has come out of a good stable. It’s co-written by one of the biggest songwriters in the world, Wayne Hector (One Direction, Nicki Minaj, Olly Murs), and Ronan Hardiman, who has scored movies and worked with Michael Flatley. It might not win, it might not qualify, but it’s a good song, and I can sing it because I wrote it about me, and I think that does make a difference.

Well I’ll (we’ll all) be watching! Through our fingers!
Thanks! I will go out to do my absolute best! I don’t want any other way.

QUICK SHOTS

Tea or coffee?
Tea in the house, coffee when out! If that makes sense?

Westlife or Boyzone?!
Westlife! Come on!

Sweet or savoury?
Sweet, but I don’t have a huge sweet tooth. Am I a good cook? If I really apply myself, yes. But do I apply myself? No, not enough and never is the real answer!

TV or radio?
TV at home. Sports mostly! I’m brutal on box sets. What I am doing if I’m not watching TV? Three kids! And I train!

City or country?
City. Love country, but a city boy

Trump or Clinton?
Clinton. I’ve met Hilar so I’m biased. She was lonely, and literally lit up the room. Such a personality.
