It will be a big surprise if Bertie's surprised

They do surprise parties differently in Kerry. The great Paidi O Se is throwing a surprise party for his friend Bertie Ahern next Wednesday. The hooley will take place after the recording of The Road to Croker in O Se's world famous pub in Ventry. My Deep Throat in the Kingdom has provided me with the menu Bertie will be choosing from that night. There'll be Joe Ban's spuds from the foothills of Mount Eagle, washed clean in the waters of Loch Chill Uru, and smoked mackerel from Oilean a'hArt. To say nothing of chicken from Luib na gCearc and your favourite smeathan. The Begley family will provide music for set, for trot and for roll. All organised, then. Oh -- just make sure nobody tells Bertie.

The former Taoiseach has had a good summer by all accounts. Not least because he was holidaying with his former wife Miriam in Portugal. Before that, he booked into Parknasilla Hotel in south Co Kerry -- where he has been holidaying with family and friends for the past 20 years -- on July 31 and checked out on August 9. He looked more relaxed and at ease than in previous years when, of course, he would have been going to this function and that event as official leader of the country. Now as unofficial leader of the country. Bertie, said my Deep Throat in Kerry, was able to spend more time with his family. He didn't as such stray far from Bernard McNamara's Parknasilla. Bertie was joined by his daughters Cecilia Ahern (and boyfriend David Keoghean) and Georgina Ahern (with husband, a Bentley driving Nicky, and the two kids). Before you ask, there was no sign of Anna Bogle.

The late Charlie Haughey's daughter, Eimear, and John Mulhearn called into the hotel on a few occasions and were seen chatting to Bertie. Bertie's -- and before him Charles J Haughey's -- advisor, Des Peelo, was staying in the hotel with his lovely wife Philo. They flew to the Baltic states yesterday for a break before heading on to Des's brother Richard's wedding in Chicago. The windy city as opposed to Dublin, the wet and windy city.
