An old iterview with Nickys mum Yvonne from 2002 so thoguht is post it... Its quite long NICKY'S MUM YVONNE NICKY was due on 6th September, but he was not born until the 9th October. He was having such a great time, he didn't want to come out. He was a very good baby, he was late getting teeth, over a year old so he didn't have any problems with teething. "He wasn't a sickly child, he just suffered from the normal childhood illnesses, measles and chickenpox, that kind of thing. "When he was a teenager he always wanted an earring but I would never let him have one. Then a couple of weeks before he went away to Leeds, he got one, that is probably the wildest thing that he did. I pretended not to notice it. "He was always pretty well behaved although he broke about six panes of glass in one week playing football in the house - I was furious with him. He broke glass in the patio door and one of the bedroom windows. "He never had to do a paper run or anything like that because at 16 he was signed for Leeds United. He spent two years there as a professional goalkeeper. That would have been his first job." Although Nicky was a talented soccer player, he made the jump into the music industry to become one of Ireland's top pop stars "His dad always played in a band, doing dinner dances and stuff like that and he used to help his dad very Saturday setting the gear up. "It was his sister who danced and sang and I thought she would have worked in the entertainments industry, I thought he was happy with the football." Nicky had an interesting start to school life. Yvonne still remembers his first day: "Well it's hard to forget because the first day I had taken him to school he had been knocked down the night before. "He was just five and he'd had his dinner and I'd let him out for half an hour. He had only gone out and there was a knock at the door to say he had been knocked down. I spent most of the night in the hospital. "He had about three or four stitches in his forehead. He still has a tiny scar. "He was always popular in school, although he might have been a bit of a teacher's pet. He was always good at English, writing essays and the like but he hated maths, although he liked counting his money." Although heart-throb Nicky is now on the bedroom wall of thousands of teen fans, mum Yvonne says that the worldwide success hasn't changed him. "He maybe lives in the fast lane a bit more now, but he's happy, and if he's happy, I'm happy. "One thing that has changed a little is the way he sings everywhere he goes, in the bedroom, the bathroom. He can hardly walk past a mirror without singing. "Come to think of it, when he comes back after being on tour with the band he comes in with the suitcase, opens it up and just leaves it. "Even now if he came in, he'd just leave it there, head out to a friend's house and leave it for me to put everything away. But I don't really mind, I've always done that anyway. "What he has always done is drink his tea with the spoon in the cup, that really irritates me. "It's unnatural for him to drink the tea any other way - he can't take it out. Where he picked that up, I don't know. None of the rest of us do it. I keep on thinking he's going to put his eye out. "He worries a lot now while he's away about the lot of us. It wouldn't necessarily be worried about anyone being ill, just in general he would ring. Is everything alright? Is everybody alright? He phones home every day unless they are travelling. "When they were making the Westlife video they had great difficulty getting him to use the lift. If he can avoid taking the lift, he would. He's got a bit of a phobia about them. "I have to say I'm glad that he's still religious. He would go to mass every Sunday. We all used to go to mass together. "Because he is away on tour he can't go as often as he'd like. He carries a little guardian angel brooch everywhere he goes. "The brooch is a guardian angel which has his birthstone for October. My mam bought one for for all the band members, so they all have them." The family always used to gather round the TV to watch the Eurovision song contest every year. "It was great family entertainment for us. Maybe not in the last couple of years, but certainly from when they were small. I loved it, and their dad loved it although Nicky Senior was almost always out playing, but it was always a big treat over the years. "We always sat down and enjoyed it and the voting was the highlight." Does he take vitamin pills? "Yes on occasions he would have been on vitamins on tour. He did during the last tour, I saw them but I don't know if he is still on them or how regular he takes them. "When he's going out he likes to make sure his hair is alright. But that is only now, since joining the band. "Oh, when he was very young he had this spiked haircut. He would have had the spike on top and long at the back and the bits that were too long sticking out would get gelled into a state paralysis, so they wouldn't move! He wanted, you know, the perfect look!" Part 2 Despite being on the road and keeping to a punishing tour schedule, Nicky stays healthy by taking vitamin supplements and is rarely sick. "The year before last they had to send him home from Sweden, though. He was on the verge of pneumonia so the doctor advised to send him home. But he was grand after a few days with some antibiotics." Nicky has an extensive collection of tapes and CDs. From Riverdance to Bros and Wet, Wet, Wet, most shades of the music world are covered in his collection. He also helped his dad with karoake and has a large collection of tapes for that as well. As well as music, Nicky also reads to help him relax. Mostly he prefers autobiographies and books on football, or anything that he thinks he could learn from, but he likes to out with his family and friends. "A good night out for Nicky would be to go out for a meal. He had a few good nights the last time he was home and thoroughly enjoyed himself. He is not a great drinker. He likes a good glass of red wine. It took him a long time to get to like the drink - he forced himself!" Mum Yvonne confesses to keeping mementos of Nicky's childhood: "His milk teeth are around somewhere - probably with the fairies. I'll probably find the milk teeth and such next week when I'm moving everything to have new walk-in wardrobes built." Although Nicky is role model himself, when he was younger he had a lot of people he looked up to, mostly footbal players. "He always liked Lee Sharp, Chris Sutton and Frank Stapleton." "He met one of his greatest heroes - Lee Sharp. When he went to Leeds United, Lee came from Manchester United to join Leeds. Nicky became his boot boy, and they became friends. "Gary Kelly who played for the same local school team as Nicky, Home Farm, was also another of his idols. Gary was older than Nicky and years later he also joined Leeds and Nicky became his boot boy. "A boot boy is like an apprentice to the professional. They're assigned to them for a year and clean their boots, run errands and stuff like that, as well as pick up tips on the way. "Even now, it's his football trophies that are probably his most prized possesions. But now he also has the discs from being with Westlife. He also has some footballs in the shed which were signed by all the Irish players. That would have meant a lot to him then. "He had a car for a while then sold it as he wasn't here to drive it. Then a few years ago in 1995 just after he went away to Leeds he was nominated in Baldoyle for Person of the Year award and he won in the youth category. They felt he was a role model for children in the area so he has the award for that. "I don't think there is anything I would change about Nicky really. He's perfect, after all he is MY son! "We get a lot of fans coming by, taking pictures of the house, and some coming to the door. We get a lot of fans and lots of post. The neighbours here are all delighted for him, happy for him, proud of him in the area. "I suppose I worry a lot when he's away, we all think about accidents and what could happen. But once he is happy at the end of the day, it doesn't matter." Sunday Mirror |
