Strong women who are the rocks behind the leader BERTIE?S TIES: With daughters Cecelia and Georgina and estranged wife Miriam Wednesday April 02 2008 MIRIAM Ahern spoke of her sadness about her estranged husband’s decision to quit as leader of the country. Bertie Ahern’s tight-knit family closed ranks around him today after his shock announcement that he was stepping down and was handing in his resignation on May 6. After hearing his statement at Government Buildings, Miriam said: “I’m sad about Bertie leaving office at the moment and I’m very proud of what he has achieved.” She declined to comment any further and it’s not known if she had any prior knowledge of his decision to step down. Neither Cecilia nor Georgina Ahern opted to comment. SPOTLIGHT His two daughters are often in the media spotlight, given that Cecilia is a best-selling author and Georgina is married to Westlife's Nicky Byrne. Yet it appears that this morning’s shock decision by An Taoiseach was still sinking in. “There's no way they will be making a comment on this” a close source said today. Throughout his career, and despite all his recent adventures at the Tribunals, Bertie has always had the staunch support of the women in his life. The first, his mother, Julia, a native of Co Cork, was often pictured with her well-known son. He was devoted to her and her death, during the crucial final negotiations of the Good Friday Agreement, was heartbreaking for him. Despite their marital separation and subsequent relationships with respective others, Bertie and Miriam have always presented a united front in rearing their two daughters. Bertie met Miriam Kelly, a bank official who lived near the Aherns, in 1972 and they married in 1975. They went their separate ways in 1992, but in recent years have met at various functions. The Taoiseach has supported Miriam's charity work for organisations like CARI, which works for children affected by sexual abuse, and is said to get on well with her new partner, restaurateur Terry McCoy. When the first Ahern grandchildren, twins Jay and Rocco, were being Christened, the extended Ahern family went out for lunch with Terry. Miriam, Bertie, Cecelia and her partner David Keoghan and Georgina and Westlifer Nicky Byrne, the proud parents, were all in attendance. Of the other women, of course there was Celia Larkin, Bertie's “significant other” for over a decade until 2003. A Fianna Fail activist, Celia met the future Taoiseach in the 1980s and was by his side when he became Toaiseach. Bertie was often criticised for his refusal to divorce Miriam and marry the woman he described as “his life partner” but it was said that this didn't mix well with his Catholic beliefs. However, neither Miriam nor Celia has ever spoken about this in public; such is their loyalty to their former husband and partner respectively. PRAISE Bertie's daughters Cecelia and Georgina have never spoken about their famous father either other than in terms of the highest praise. Meanwhile, Georgina is often pictured on the social pages with her husband Nicky but like Cecelia, she has chosen never to speak publicly about her father's life but is always willing to pose for photographs with him. Relations in the family are so good that Georgina's husband happily canvassed with his father-in-law during the general election of May 2007. Source:Indepdent.ie |
