SECURITY ALERT ON THREATS TO BERTIE

BERTIE Ahern revealed he has beefed up security after receiving serious threats to his safety.
A number of warnings, including one message that has been repeatedmany times, are being taken seriously by the Taoiseach's security team.

It is believed the threats are coming from one person.

The news emerged as Bertie started his annual holiday in Co Kerry with daughters Georgina and Cecelia, their partners Nicky Byrne and David Keoghan and 15-week-old twin grandsons Rocco and Jay. Mr Ahern said his bodyguards did not want him to go for walks alone because they were worried about his personal safety.

He added he now has to "duck out" to get a walk around the groundsof the plush Parknasilla Hotel near Sneem, Co Kerry, which also has security guards at the entrance.

While Bertie - who has been visiting Co Kerry every summer for thelast 20 years - tried to shrug off the seriousness of the situation it was clear his security team were on high alert after the disturbing letters.

The Taoiseach said: "I just don't want to see the letters any more. I'll leave it to my security people to handle it.

"Sometimes I'd be concerned that when I am out for a walk a lulu would jump out from the bushes and grab me.

"You never know what kind of characters are out there. But then again you can't live your life like that, you just have to be careful."Details about the threats were sketchy for security reasons but FineGael spokesman Phil Hogan said this wasn't good enough and the public had a right to know about the Taoiseach's safety.

He added: "A lack of specific details will create anxiety about the nature of that threat, including whether there may be paramilitary links.

"It should also be made clear if similar threats have been made against other members of Government."
