Kian Egan defends The Voice of Ireland over lack of successful winners
3rd June 2017

Former Voice Of Ireland judge Kian Egan has said it wasn’t the show’s fault its winners didn’t go on to be huge stars — claiming it’s just too difficult to create a hit album here.

The ex-Westlife singer was a coach on the show for five years before it was axed and replaced with Dancing With The Stars.

But he has defended the show — despite the fact it failed to churn out any successful acts after the winner of the show received a recording contract worth €100,000 with Universal Music Ireland.

Kian told The Star: “We’re a small island. We’re not America. We have a very small population, to try and get people to turn out every year who can sing.

“Plus the show didn’t have any successful acts. The UK show didn’t have any successful acts either and that has nothing to do with the TV show.”

Speaking at the launch of Coca Cola’s Clean Coast Week, which encourages beach goers not to litter our shorelines, Kian explained how Ireland is too small to produce an album that would make enough money to cover costs.

“The problem is a small country with four million people, to have a No1 album in this country it takes probably 1,500 copies to sell so it doesn’t take a huge amount,” he said.

“(But) to make that album to get to No1 probably costs upwards of €50,000 to €100,000 — that is to make the album properly.

“So even if you had a No1 album for 10 weeks, which is highly unlikely for a local artist to have that, the sums just don’t add up for a record label to go into that process.”

But he defended how the show provided a platform for contestants, name-checking Jim Devine as a successful artist.

“There are platforms off the back of it,” he said.

“I’ve seen a few people do well off the Voice of Ireland. I use one guy massively in particular as an example. He was on the first season — a guy called Jim Devine.

“He was a farmer, he lived outside of Newry. He’s now a country artist touring the country in hotels playing to 2,000 people a night.

“He’s released three albums all by himself.

“Universal didn’t have anything to do with him because he didn’t win the show. I think he came fourth. He’s making a solid living doing that.

“He is no longer a farmer, he’s bought himself a house, he makes music videos and he tours with Nathan Carter.

“Then there is another girl from season three and she’s a wedding singer. She’s getting the gigs as the ex-Voice of Ireland contestant.

“So there are avenues for people to get careers out of it.”
