Kian Egan had a blast from the past on The Voice of Ireland tonight when his childhood pal Kelesa Mulcahy auditioned.

Kelesa, 34, grew up in Co Sligo with Kian and she would also have mingled with him during his Westlife days, when she was in girlband Minx.

The band toured with Liberty X and Blue and even played Wembley Arena.

Kelesa took another shot at the big time on Sunday night and wowed the judges with a cover of ACDC’s anthem Highway To Hell – managing to get Kian, Bressie, Rachel Stevens and Una Foden to turn around.

Kian, 35, recognised Kelesa straight away, saying: “She grew up with me, pretty much.

“Kelesa did loads of musicals with me, Shane and Mark from Westlife, we’ve known each other our whole lives and we see each other out and about every now and again in Sligo.

“Brilliant to see you here, well done.”

She also won glowing reviews from the rest of the panel, with Tipperary native Una branding her “the one to watch in the competition.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Kelesa decided to stick to her roots and chose team Kian.

Another familiar face who tried out was Maria Cuche, who represented Ireland in the Eurovision in 1985.

Co Louth native Maria has been legally blind since she was just nine but is determined that it won’t hold her back.

The 50-year-old said: “I was at school and then all of a sudden I couldn’t see the board. In a couple of weeks I couldn’t see anything, it’s a very rare disease that wipes the retina.

“It’s a fight to do everything like normal people.

“Like I was told I would never have children, it would be too difficult, I said I’d prove them wrong and have seven.

Well at my age perhaps you shouldn’t go for The Voice but it’s my personality, I want to prove that you can do so much, you just have to go for it and make your dream come true.”

Maria gave a rousing rendition of Beyonce’s hit If I Was A Boy, securing her a place on team Una.

There were also emotional scenes when Patrick Kelly from Tallaght, west Dublin said he hoped his audition could reignite his daughter’s passion for singing.

Patrick, 34, explained: “I always loved singing from an early age but I gave it up and I’ve regretted that.

I’ve a daughter and she’s taken the same turns – she loves writing music, she stopped recently though after her mam passed away a couple of years back, it’s been a tough time for her.

“So I’m hoping by me getting back into music it might make her try again, hopefully it can make her proud again.”

Unfortunately Patrick’s version of Choose the Moody Blues classic, Nights in White Satin failed to win him a place in the Battle stages – but the panel urged him not to give up on singing.

The Voice of Ireland airs every Sunday on RTE One at 6.30pm.
