Life lessons with Kian Egan: Myself and Jodi have a great lust for life Published 22/11/2015 | 02:30 Posted Image As one of the members of best-selling boyband Westlife, Kian Egan (35) achieved worldwide fame. He grew up in Sligo as the fifth of Patricia and Kevin Egan's seven children, and is married to English actress and singer Jodi Albert. They have two sons, Koa, who turns four in December, and Zeke, who was born in May. Becoming a parent is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It's such a gift seeing your baby become a little boy with his own personality, and recognising that what you do and who you are is going to mould him. Myself and Jodi are realising that we can't curse as much or act certain ways any more. The first thing I did when I came out of the labour ward was to ring my mother to thank her, because birth was the most incredible thing I have ever witnessed. Becoming a dad really made me appreciate what parents do for us. Life is kind of superficial and you have to have a job and earn money, but I think, fundamentally, we're here on earth to have children. Losing my dad six years ago broke my heart. He was a real character, and when he was sick in hospital, he would always tell us to go home and get on with our own lives because he was grand. We had the wedding planned when dad got sick, so I told him I would move it but he wouldn't hear of it. He said, "You'll go and get married to the woman of your dreams, and I hope I can be there, but if I'm not, don't feel bad about it." Dad never got to meet my little boys, which is very hard. Jodi lost her lovely mam back in February after an eight-year battle with cancer, and it was horrific watching that happen. She was also pregnant on Zeke. He was born on her mum's birthday, but she wasn't around. Koa knows they are up in the stars looking down, and he says goodnight to his nanny and grandad every night. The last few years have taught us a lot but our lives are in a lovely place at the minute. We're very lucky that we got to grow up with our four parents and there were no splits there. We brought our parents everywhere with us in Westlife, even to meet the Pope. We always flew them over to the UK or around the world for a leg of the tour, so we were blessed to be able to share those experiences with them. One great memory I have is getting 80,000 people to sing happy birthday to my dad in Croke Park. There is no bad blood between any of us in Westlife. We all get on great, but we spent so long in each other's pockets that once the band ended, we all went in separate directions. It is probably only in the last six months that I'm thinking I must give the lads a ring and meet up. There were times when I lost my head in Westlife, and we all lost the run of ourselves at one time, thinking we were bigger and greater than we were. I think having a good family is what grounds you, and Irish people don't let you lose the run of yourself. I am no different to anybody else, but I just managed to have a streak of good luck and everything went my way. The first time I saw our debut CD, I was like, "Wow!" and I have been like that about everything since. I see thousands of people applying to become singers on The Voice of Ireland, and I realise how lucky I am that it happened for me. When you leave something that successful there's a big fear initially around what you are going to do with the rest of your life? We're OK financially and I will never be stuck, which I am grateful for as it means I can bring my family up in a nice environment. We have kind of let the UK go a little bit now, and have moved back to Ireland full-time to bring up our family. If something great comes along in England, I will take it, but I'm happy to let all that go and have a career here. As we settle in, we're trying to make a few waves here in Ireland. Jodi is just about to open a boutique in Sligo, which is a whole other adventure. We're a good team and we both have a great lust for life. We have loads of fun and a good work/life balance. I am the number one masterchef in my household. I did home economics in school and was cooking at 15, making lasagnes and things like that. I was the first out of Westlife to get an apartment in London, because I hated hotels and not being able to make my own tea and toast. I'm all about fresh ingredients, and won't pump junk into the kids because I want them to have the right vitamins and minerals. Koa eats avocado on brown wholegrain toast for breakfast instead of a bowl of cereal. Our everyday dinner is rice and fish with ginger and garlic, and everything is sweet potato or brown rice. We're very conscious of that. Of course we go to restaurants and treat ourselves, but 80pc of the food we eat is home-cooked and healthy. With Uncle Ben's Ben's Beginners, the message is really clever, as if you get your children involved in the cooking process, they'll grow up understanding what's going into their meal. Koa is up in the morning stirring his porridge, putting his blueberries in and squeezing in some honey. You have to be cautious where there is heat, but he's there beside me and I'm constantly watching him. I'll say, "Let's do rice and veg Koa" and he's in the fridge getting ginger, carrots and broccoli without me even telling him the ingredients. Kian is an ambassador for Uncle Ben's 'Ben's Beginners', which encourages Irish parents to get cooking with their children.
