Westlife's Kian Egan to be coach on 'The Voice' By Ken Sweeney Entertainment Editor Friday October 07 2011 WESTLIFE singer Kian Egan is to play a starring role on RTE's new talent show. The Irish Independent has learned that the 31-year old is to be a vocal coach on 'The Voice Of Ireland' when it comes to TV screens early next year. Programme sources have said that the star is perfect for the role as not only is he a member of one of the world's biggest pop bands, but he also has experience of band management. "Kian realised that the huge amount of experience he has in the music business could be of great use to any aspiring singer trying to get a break," a programme insider said. Until recently the Westlife vocalist was co-managing his wife Jodi Albert's girlband Wonderland but the group split last month after being dropped by their record label. The Irish Independent has also learned that Belfast born Brian Kennedy is to be another coach on the programme. Egan and Kennedy will be joined by fellow coaches Sharon Corr and former Blizzards singer Niall Breslin aka Bressie. - Ken Sweeney Entertainment Editor |

The Voice Will Leave You Speechless By Kathryn Rogers Westlife star Kian Egan claims the new music talent show The Voice of Ireland will be the biggest and best series ever broadcast on RTE. Kian, who stars as a coach on the show, insisted it’s a “million” times better than Grainne Seoige’s All Ireland Talent Show. “I believe this show will be massive,” the singer said. “It will be the biggest show ever on RTE. It’s certainly the biggest production ever in Ireland. It really feels like nothing ever made here before. I don’t know what the budget is but it feels much bigger than anything that’s gone before it.” Kian claimed the new show, which kicks off next weekend, is on par with popular big budget shows on the BBC or ITV. “I’ve never seen anything like it in Ireland before,” he said. “Westlife have done all the shows so I think I’d have a good idea and this feel like a big UK production to me.” He added: “It’s millions of times superior to the All Ireland Talent Show. There’s just no comparison.” Kian will join Sharon Corr, Brian Kennedy and Bressie, the former singer of The Blizzards, as coaches on the show. Kathryn Thomas will be presenting The Voice on RTE One, while Eoghan McDermott will present a spin-off show on RTE Two. Entrants will be in with a chance to win a recording contract with Universal Music but first they have to work their way through three stages in The Voice. The first is a blind audition, the second is a singing battle and the final stage is the live performance shows. During the blind auditions, the four coaches will be seated with their backs to the singers, and their decisions are based solely on the contestant’s voice. The series has already been a massive success in the US and the Netherlands. The US version of the reality TV music show stars pop diva Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, country music star Blake Shelton and hip-hop artist Cee Lo Green. The NBC show is presented by TV star Carson Daly. Credit/Source: www.starplus.ie |

Kian Egan is Irish Simon Cowell on The Voice By Kathryn Rogers Westlife star, Kian Egan, admitted he doesn’t care if he’s been branded TV’s Mr Nasty on RTE’s new talent show, The Voice. Show insiders have claimed Kian’s bluntness will see him compared to X Factor star Simon Cowell when the series kicks off this weekend. However, Kian insists that he is not deliberately setting out to be the show ‘meanie’. “I’m not going nasty for the sake of it,” he said. But I’m definitely going to give my opinion and I’m not going to sugarcoat it to spare someone’s feelings. I think we owe it to the contestants to be frank – the music industry is a harsh place and they have to face the realities of it.” He admitted he doesn’t care if he’s branded the Irish Simon Cowell. “I think Simon is brilliant,” he said. “His talent is simply saying what people are thinking at home. He just says it as it is. I don’t think he’s deliberately cruel – I think he’s very practical.” Kian claims his aim is to encourage the contestants but to be brutally honest when necessary. “It drives me mad when I’m watching a show and judges are not being honest,” he said. “There’s a lot of times I’ve felt like throwing my shoe at the telly. I don’t want viewers of The Voice feeling that way. I think we’ve got to say it like it is. We owe it to the viewers and the contestants.” He admitted that his candid opinions have also led to rows with the other judges on the show. “We have differences of opinions,” he said. “Myself and Brian don’t see eye to eye a lot of the time and there have been rows on camera. It’s probably because each of us gets precious about our acts and it’s hard not to wade in and defend them if another judge is being critical. All of us come from a different place in the music industry and all of us have very different views.” Credit/Source: www.starplus.ie |

Thanks for posting Jo I like Simon for being so honest on the shows he does, he just says the things the viewers are thinking so if Kian wants to do the same good on him. Not everyone as the same opinions anyway. I know Simon can be a bit nasty with it sometimes with the way he says things which is wrong but he has never been one to suger coat things that's why he is known as Mr. Nasty and some people like him for it some people don't. |

Thanks for posting Jo. I agree with Sara, the truth hurts sometimes. If Kian doesn't say what he really thinks of them, he might as well not be a judge. Kian knows what it is all about. :D |

708,000 watch The Voice of Ireland The opening episode of The Voice of Ireland has proven to be a great ratings success on RTÉ One, with 708,000 tuning in to see the first group of hopefuls. Sunday’s show saw the four coaches – Bressie, Sharon Corr, Kian Egan and Brian Kennedy – pick the first singers they will mentor on their teams. The coaches were not allowed see the singers, only to hear them, while they sang. The big shock on the opening show was that singer Tara Blaise, who has released two albums, was not picked by any of the judges from her rendition of Livin’ on a Prayer. There will be four more ‘blind audition shows’ – where the coaches are not allowed see the singers, only to hear them – which will be followed by three singing battle rounds and then the live performance shows will begin on March 4. The live shows will run for nine weeks, with the public helping to decide who stays in the competition. The final four contestants – one for each coach – will compete in the grand final for a recording contract with Universal Music.
