Interview: Westlife's Shane Filan

Shane Filan has not only sung on The X Factor with his band Westlife this year, but his band's manager is the show's judge Louis Walsh.

Shane reveals who he has tipped for the top, how Louis is coping with the death of Boyzone's Stephen Gately, and why he thinks people should give John and Edward a break.

Q: You performed on the show the week Louis came back after taking time off to attend Stephen's funeral. How is he?

A: Louis is absolutely devastated over the whole thing and he kind of shuts things out when things bother him and I think that's what he's doing now, he's just going back to work.

But I think he'll go back (home) at Christmas maybe and he'll sit down and it will really hit him you know, when he's just chilling out for a few weeks in his Christmas holidays - I think that's when it will hit Louis a lot.

He was very close to Stephen over the years, being his manager for 15, 16 years. It's horrific to even think about it. It's just very, very tragic and very, very sad.

Q: Louis only has John and Edward left in the competition now. How do you think he'll do?

A: I think he's got a golden ticket there though. Them two boys are not the best singers in the world and they're not the best singers on the show at all but for some reason they're getting a lot of votes and they're very entertaining. I'd say that myself, I'm looking actually forward to seeing what they're going to do this weekend and I mean that. I think that's what the whole country is thinking, they're thinking, well they can't win it but they're very entertaining and they're funny.

But they're 18-year-old kids and they know - they know they're not the best singers on the show but they know they're getting a lot of votes and I was chatting the other night and they were saying 'we're just having such a good time we can't believe it it's so fun'. They're just innocent little kids and they're having a laugh and everyone keeps voting for them so they could win it, it's as simple as that.

I know Simon's giving them a hard time, saying they can't win and all this. But they can because people will vote for them and they'll win it, it's as simple as that. You know this show you're not going to find a Leona Lewis every year, or a Shane Ward every year. It's not going to be that perfect. So some year it might be the entertaining factor that's going to win it.

Q: Simon has said Louis should never have even put them through, what do think about that?

A: You're not going to get 12 amazing singers, there'll always be different elements that somebody is going to bring to the show and John And Edward bring fun and entertainment to the show. And that's why Louis put them through. That's exactly why he told me they were going to be brilliant on the show, the public are going to love them and he was - I didn't think he'd be this right- but he was literally on the money. It's not the end of the world if John and Edward win The X Factor.

Q: Do you have any other favourites on the show this year?

A: I do yes. There's some great singers on it. I think for me I think Lucie's very good, I think Olly's very good and I think Joe is very good as well, the boy from Newcastle. The three of them are my three favourites to maybe win it as well.

Q: You sang with JLS in the final last year. What do you make of their success so far?

A: They're doing great. I'm delighted for them. It's great to have a new band out there. In the last few years there hasn't been many good bands coming through, young pop bands. And they're really really good guys, and they're nice guys. We were chatting to them the other night and you know their first single is great and their new single is great. Pop music is coming back in a massive way and it's kind of taking over from rock and RnB so the more pop the merrier.
