In perfect harmony: Superstar Shane hits all the right notes in charity soccer match By MICHAEL MORAN Shane, who celebrated his 30th birthday last month, set up one goal and scored a penalty during a three-one win over Paul Cook's side in an entertaining charity match played out before over five hundred enthusiastic fans, a group of them from Norway. Shane put aside the microphone and donned his boots to assist friends Lesley Ann Culkin and Hilary Jones to raise funds on behalf of the Irish Red Cross organisation. Lesley Ann and Hilary are both taking part in the Platinum Peak Challenge treck to Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, on August 15th. The ladies were delighted with the response to Wednesday's match which raised over E3,000 and helped them reach their combined target of E10,000. It must certainly have been be the first time that the historic venue heard a louder cheer for a 'visiting' team than the home side as Shane's squad scored twice in the final ten minutes to Shane Filan swapped working on Westlife's new album to realise what he described as a boyhood dream in leading his 'Night Owls' astro-turf select to victory over Sligo Rovers in a fundraising friendly at the Showgrounds on Wednesday night last. Shane Filan of Westlife in action against Sligo Rovers, in a charity match in aid of the Red Cross at the Showgrounds, Sligo. claim their win. "Basically, we were talking about how we could raise money for Lesley Ann and Hilary and it just came up about a football match. "Sligo Rovers had no hesitation in helping out. I never thought I'd get a chance to play against them on the Showgrounds pitch, but it was all good craic," said Shane. Shane had flown in from London in the afternoon and arrived about an hour before kickoff to greet the supporters who were there early before he led mascots Aoife (5) and Francis (3) Lynch onto the pitch. He also met their five month old sister Elana and dad, Francis senior. His panel included former Sligo Rovers players Sean Flannery, Donagh Oates and Phil Gallagher, while Rovers started with a strong line-up which featured Danny Ventre, Martin Camano, Rob Turner, Christopher Kelly, Dean Marshall, Owen Morrison and Danny Keohane. The Westlife star played up front alongside Sean Flannery. Marshall thundered a 30th minute header off the crossbar from a corner and goalkeeper Cathal O'Loughlin kept the scoreline blank with a number of important saves throughout. The woodwork came to O'Loughlin's rescue again in the 38th minute, Comano's effort coming back down and staying out despite Rovers' appeals that the ball had crossed the line. Understandably, Shane's every touch was greeted by loud cheers and five minutes from half-time he almost laid the foundations for the opening goal when he broke clear from Brian Herity's pass and his left foot cross found Michael Walsh, who shot wide. Shane's team went in front nine minutes into the second-half when substitute Gerry Carr allowed Sean Flannery in behind him and with the Rovers assistant manager hauling the striker back in the area, Flannery managed to steer the ball across the line. Rovers, for whom manager Paul Cook also took to the field, restored parity in the 56th minute through Christopher Kelly and seven minutes later it was Owen Morrison's turn to hit the crossbar. It seemed the match was destined to end in a draw as it entered the final phase, but Anthony Henneberry made it twoone from Shane's pass in the 80th minute. Gerry Carr then fouled the Westlife singer in the area and Shane stepped up to comfortably slot home the resultant penalty past Ciaran Kelly. Sligo Rovers: Ciaran Kelly, Keith Duffy, Danny Keohane, Danny Ventre, Martin Camano, Michael McGrath, Darren Meehan, Christopher Kelly, Rob Turner, Dean Marshall, Owen Morrison, Conor O'Grady, Barry O'Mahoney, Gerry Carr, Paul Cook, Brian Cash, Eoin Doyle. Shane Filan XI: Cathal O'Loughlin, Ronan McNamara, Barry Sheerin, Vinny Nally, Neil Jones, Brian Herity, Paul Keaveney, Keith Lynch, Michael Walsh, Shane Filan, Sean Flannery, Donagh Oates, Phil Gallagher, Ryan Casey, Anthony Henneberry, Justin Dykes, Kelvin McGowan, Craig Walsh, Mark Cunningham, Damien McSharry. Referee: Paul Deering. - MICHAEL MORAN Credit/Source: www.sligochampion.ie |
