Devastation as hero was back to being the best

Byline: PAUL MARTIN

AT around 8.30pm on Thursday my wife and I were locked in an intense conversation over dinner at a restaurant near our holiday villa in Spain.

We weren't debating the political scene, the recession or the pros and cons of Obama's new foreign policy.

We were talking about something far more important than that - well, to me at least.

As anyone who knows me will testify, there is one subject always guaranteed to stir up my emotions - Michael Jackson.

We were looking forward to all the big concerts coming up this summer and started debating what the best gigs we had ever been to were.

When it came to my turn my wife rolled her her eyes as if to say: "I don't have to guess what your favourites are." Poor Sinead often moans that when she married me there was another person in the relationship - and he wore a sparkly glove.

Predictably enough I rhymed off my top threee gigs ever. That's easy, I declared. Michael Jackson at Lansdowne Road in 1992, Michael Jackson at Wembley in 1988, Michael Jackson at the RDS in 1997.

Little did I know that as I made my latest proclamation of my undying loyalty to my childhood hero he was lying in a lonely mansion in Los Angeles slipping away for ever from his millions of adoring fans.

Us Michael Jackson fans have been through some tough times over the years. Facing ridicule, disappointment and controversy head-on is all part of the deal when you buy into Jacko mania. People loved winding us up, branding him everything from a pop flop to a wacky weirdo.

But as far as I was concerned their arguments were always flawed - for they could never argue with the facts, which were 750 million album sales and a place in the history books as the man who made music history.

But, despite the constant jibes and put-downs, the last few months were just like the good old days, not least because we all got to give the proverbial two fingers to those who had brandished our hero a has-been living off past glories.

Jacko sure put those people in his place when he sold 750,000 tickets for his 50 comeback shows in less than an hour, breaking every record in the process... again. I had been counting down the days to his first big gig at the O2 on July 13.

Each morning of our holiday I would drive Sinead to distraction over breakfast. Just 16 days to Jacko...Just 15 days to Jacko and so on. But that was the Jacko effect. He had this incredible ability to make adults and kids alike marvel in his magic and majesty on the stage.

But even more exciting was that my good friend Louis Walsh was in the throes of organising for my Jacko-fanatic Westlife pal Shane Filan and I to meet the singer backstage before a gig.

I still can't believe we will never get to realise that dream. To me, June 25, 2009, will be the day that the music died. But my legend, the King Of Pop Michael Jackson, will live on for ever.
