Shane's Carraroe project could start in the summer

Work could begin as early as this summer on a massive €15m retail project at Carraroe which has the potential to create up to 100 jobs during the construction phase and a further 200 jobs when fully operational.

It follows the decision by Sligo County Council to grant planning permission for a new neighbourhood centre which is earmarked for a seven acre site close to Carraroe roundabout on the old Dublin road.

The comprehensive mixeduse scheme, which incorporates a supermarket and ten other shops as well as sixty-eight apartments, will be built by Shafin Ltd, the development company owned by Westlife star, Shane Filan, and his brother, Finbar.

The Westlife singer described the project as a vote of confidence in the retail potential of Sligo and said Shafin Ltd was anxious to press ahead with the development as quickly as possible.

Finbar Filan maintained that construction work could begin this summer if there were no delays in the planning process. He predicted that 100 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the development with a further 200 jobs coming on stream when all of the retail outlets in the neighbourhood centre opened for business.

An indication of the scale of the development is that the developers have to pay Sligo County Council over €1m in bonds and planning contributions.

Already, a leading national retail firm has been acquired as an anchor tenant for the new supermarket outlet and other shops to be located in the Centre are a pharmacy, restaurant and beauty salon. A substantial crèche, a medicentre, a health and wellness centre, as well as significant office space, will also be included in the overall scheme.

The development will comprise seven separate buildings, ranging in height to three storeys, and the developers say the project will act as an 'impressive gateway entrance' to Sligo city along the old Dublin road. A 'neighbourhood square' will have detailed landscaping, including water features, seating, textured paving and mature trees.

A total of 270 car parking spaces are planned, 165 of which will be underground.

Earlier this year, Sligo County Council granted planning permission for a €400,000 extension to nearby Naomh Eanna National School, a project which is being funded by Shafin Ltd.

Mr. Finbar Filan said this week that construction of the extension would be carried out at a time 'convenient for the school'.
