Westlife’s Shane helps residents to see the light

RESIDENTS in a number of houses in Rathedmond estate are rejoicing at having seen the light recently.

It wasn’t a religious experience or anything like but the removal of trees from behind their houses.

Some people had been “living in darkness for the past 15 years” because of a dense line of evergreen trees in a garden to the rear of a number of houses, according to the secretary of the local residents association, Jim O’Sullivan.

He said that residents were grateful to Shafin Developments, the new owners of the site - which is behind Lisroyan House on Strandhill Road --for cutting down the trees. Shafin Developments is a company involving Westlife member Shane Filan and his brother Finbar.

Mr O’Sullivan said: “Some households have had to keep heating and lighting on all a day during the winter months for all those years and it is really remarkable that during all that time no one could intervene and instruct the former owner to remove the nuisance.

“Residents are thankful and acknowledge the good work carried out by the new owners of the property, Shafin Developments.

“It was an act of good neighbourli-ness and evoked the spirit of the season and they are to be commended for their quick response to the request from residents to tackle the problem.”

Mr O’Sullivan said that residents were hopeful that this was a marker for the future and that Shafin Developments would sit down with residents when considering any new development proposal for the site to discuss matters of concern prior to drawing up any plans.

Last year a plan by Shafin to build 63 apartments on the site, which is the rear of Lisroyan House on the Strandhill Road, was refused planning permission. Sligo Borough Council had granted approval but the Rathedmond Residents Association appealed the decision to an An Bord Pleanala.

Mr O’Sullivan said that his association hoped that Shafin now recognised that the site was “totally unsuitable for high-density development and they should consider other options for the site that will be harmonious with the existing amenity of the area”.

Thanks Jo for posting, I'm glad that the people can now see in the day time, what a long time it took for some-one to do something about it. I hope Shane & his brother solve the business of building on the site with the residents. :)

Thanks for posting. It's good the trees were taken down...15 years is a long time to be 'living in darkness!' A few years ago, we had some evergreen trees trimmed in our garden because the house behind complained they weren't getting any light..it's ok now though. :D
