Plucky little Ryan Egan realised the dream of a lifetime when he met top rookie rally driver Shaun Gallagher and also bumped into hometown idol Shane Filan of Westlife for good measure.

Brave five year old Ryan has been battling cancer for more than half of his short life, and has developed a huge interest in cars and rally driving in between him visiting hospital.

So when 2007 World Rally Driver Rookie of the year Shaun Gallagher put his car through its paces in Ryan's hometown of Sligo , the youngster was an avid spectator.

Fellow townie, Shane Filan also popped along to promote this years WRC opening event , which is taking place across the North west during Rally Ireland 2009 from 29th January to February 1st .

And little Ryan couldnt contain himself at the delight of getting to inspect a real rally car and meet hs favourite pop star at the same time, beaming a very big smile and giving us a thumbs up...

Music and sport heroes rally round brave Ryan

Car fanatic Ryan Egan (5), who has leukaemia, got to meet Westlife's Shane Filan in Sligo at the weekend to promote Rally Ireland 2009

Monday January 12 2009

YOUNG Ryan Egan realised the dream of a lifetime when he met rally driver Shaun Gallagher and hometown idol Shane Filan at the same time.

For much of his short life, Ryan (5) has been battling cancer. He has also, in between hospital visits and treatment for his leukaemia, developed a huge interest in rally-driving.

The youngster was an avid spectator as Gallagher, 2007 World Rally Championship Rookie of the Year, put his Citroen car through its paces in Sligo in preparation for this year's contest.

So, too, was fellow local Shane Filan, who popped along to help promote this year's opening event in the world championship in Ireland's north west.

"Come here, buddy", said the singer, as he invited Ryan and mum Suzanne to join him for a photograph.

Ryan, from Maugheraboy, Sligo, was just a week from his third birthday when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. He completes a three-year treatment course at the end of this year.

His proud dad Declan said: "He is doing really well. We're very hopeful that he will make a full recovery. He's been through a lot but he has done it with amazing courage."

He said that Ryan started showing an interest in cars almost as soon as he could talk.

"He has collected small cars from the age of two and always had a keen interest in knowing how they worked. When other children his age were into Power Rangers and what have you, Ryan was taking the wheels off his dinky cars and looking under the bonnet."

Ryan will get a chance to see some real action during Rally Ireland 2009, between January 29 and February 1, when there will be 18 stages through counties Sligo, Donegal, Roscommon, Cavan, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

Other youngsters have been getting involved in preparations for the rally. Local schoolchildren have been preparing St Brigid's Crosses to hand to the drivers. Children from Boyle Parochial National School, Roscommon, weaved the traditional crosses by hand.

The event will mark the start of the 2009 World Rally Championship, with 12 rounds across the world. It is the first time in almost 30 years that the beginning of the series has been held outside of Monte Carlo.

Failte Ireland, one of the sponsors, said that in 2007 the event attracted 250,000 spectators, generated €48m in economic benefit to the region and was viewed in over 180 countries by in excess of 62 million people. It was acclaimed by the WRC as the second-best round of the World Rally Championship that year.

Super cars and superstars for rally-mad Ryan

SLIGO youngster Ryan Egan might not be old enough to look over the steering wheel of a car, but he was eyeing up a potential career in rally driving on Saturday last in the company of rally star Shaun Gallagher and Westlife’s Shane Filan.

Five-year-old Ryan from Maugheraboy, who is in the final year of a three-year treatment course for Leukaemia, was special guest at a press launch for Rally Ireland held by Fáilte Ireland at the former Saehan factory at the weekend.

The event was an opportunity for an international press contingent to buckle themselves in beside Donegal driver Shaun Gallagher for a blast around the factory in his lightning quick and very loud Mitsubishi rally car.

Mind you the noise didn’t put off Ryan, who watched with boundless enthusiasm in the company of his parents, Declan and Suzanne.

Ryan, who has taken an interest in cars since he was a toddler, was diagnosed with Leukaemia a week before his third birthday, but he has responded well to the long and trying treatment course, which is due to finish at the end of this year.

As well as enjoying the sights and sounds of Gallagher’s rally car, Ryan also met Westlife star and avid petrolhead, Shane Filan, who arrived in style in his Aston Martin sports car.

Shane was bitten by the rallying bug last year when he had a chance to try Shaun Gallagher’s Citroen C2 Junior World Rally Car on Streedagh beach in North Sligo.

Shane told the Sligo Weekender he is looking forward to catching some of the action, possibly by helicopter.

“I’m around that weekend so I’ll catch as much of it as I can. I’ll get up in the air to look at it. That’s the best way to look at it,” he said.
