Suits you, sirs – Stuart’s link with Westlife
Published on 13/07/2007

WESTLIFE are coming to Carlisle - but their concert at Bitts Park on August 12 won’t be their first link with the city.

The white suits which they wore for their 2004 tour were designed by than Carlisle-born Stuart Stockdale, during his stint as men’s designer for Jasper Conran.

Stuart, who is the son of Carlisle city councillor Ian Stockdale, was born in 1968 and his career has taken him to some of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world.

After two years as a model with the Storm agency, he did a Foundation Course at Cumbria College of Art and Design followed by three years at St Martin’s School of Art and Design in London.

There Stuart had mentoring from John Galliano, did projects for Comme des Garcons, Yohi Yamamoto and British retailing giants Jigsaw and Whistles, who both bid for his final collection. Jigsaw eventually won the bidding war and started a collaboration that continues to this day. Stuart added a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art to his growing list of qualifications and he has worked for Romeo Gigli in Milan and J Crew in New York before being headhunted by Jasper Conran in London in 1999.

He has also had a visiting lecturers’ role at St Martin’s, and has been design director for Pringle.

The Carlisle Live concert, which is Westlife’s only major concert in 2007, will also feature Mutya Buena, Paul Potts - this year’s Britain’s got Talent winner - Shayne Ward and Chico.

It is being organised and funded by Stobarts, Kingmoor Park and Carlisle City Council, the event is supported by the News & Star, CFM and Cumbria County Council.

The event is a development of pop2thepark, which in previous years has brought the Sugababes, Girls Aloud and Daniel Bedingfield to local audiences.

The finals of the Stobart Factor talent contest will also be taking place at the event, which will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display.

Tickets cost just £20 for adults and £10 for children (aged 16 or under). They are available from the Sands Centre, on 01228 625222, www.thesandscentre.co.uk, on www.ticketweb.co.uk , 08700 600 100 (24 hour).

Other outlets the Times & Star office in Workington and the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Town Hall in Carlisle.

Corporate entertainment packages are available for the event at a cost of £2,000 for a table of 10.
