5th July 2007-Welcome to hospitable Dublin (article shortened to mention Westlife) Welcome to hospitable Dublin David Garson Ireland is one of the most popular European destinations, and offers its visitors an exciting combination of nature, music and culture. The beautiful Phoenix Park is even said to be the largest enclosed park in Europe THIS fascinating capital city of Eire is located at the mouth of the river Liffey where it meets the Irish Sea. The country has had a chequered and tumultuous past which in 1916 culminated in an armed rebellion in which Sinn Fein (the political wing of the Irish Republican Army) proclaimed the country to be a Republic. In 1921 Britain signed an agreement giving the New Republic official Dominion status. It was also agreed that Northern Ireland could opt out of this arrangement and remain part of the United Kingdom. In 1937 the Irish Republic was renamed Eire and in 1949 they decided to leave the British Commonwealth of Nations. Today there is a democratically elected President for a period of seven years. An elected Prime Minister and Parliamentarians with their Parliament comprising a House of Representatives (Dail Eireann) and a Senate (Seanad Eireann). Dublin has become one of the most popular destinations for the tourist who appreciates a city offering inspirational literary and musical traditions. It is also a sheer delight to just wander around the picturesque streets of this colourful metropolis. This is a cosmopolitan city easily explored by foot, or on an open top tour bus running at regular service throughout the day to most of the interesting destinations. This special bus service gives you the opportunity to explore the city at your leisure and with an “all day ticket“ allows you to get on and off as often as you wish. ***Music and song: Dublin provides a showcase for music and song, especially the traditional Irish folk music scene. Their international artists include The Dubliners and the Chieftains. Both groups having attained worldwide popularity. Pop groups such as U2 and Westlife are also internationally acclaimed performers as is Sinead O'Connor Opera: This is once again a flowering art form with “Opera Island“ having two seasons annually at the historical Gaiety Theatre and the “Opera Theatre Company“ that give regularly performances at various venues throughout Dublin. Over the last few years Dublin has certainly reinvented itself as one of Europe's liveliest capitals. Whenever you visit you will find it to be bawdy and boisterous, gentle and charming. It is never boring and you are always assured of a warm welcome in this broth of a city. See and experience it for yourself!**** Sur in english |
