YEP reader power sparks venue row

Evening Post readers who have thrown their weight behind our Leeds Needs An Arena campaign were today told: "You've done us proud."

Hundreds of people have sent in coupons or signed an online petition backing the YEP's call for the county's unofficial capital to get the music arena it deserves.
Now those coupons and petition names have been presented to Leeds City Council leader Andrew Carter as part of a dossier highlighting the benefits a new concert complex would bring.
And he responded by pledging to do all he can to give Leeds an arena to rival those already up and running in places such as Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle.
Coun Carter said: "I firmly believe that the time is right to deliver a facility which will put the city on the map in terms of entertainment.
"I'd like to thank the YEP for the job it has done keeping this issue in the public eye.
"I'm also delighted with the level of backing we have had from the paper's readers.
"It's a real vote of confidence for what we are trying to achieve."
Handing over the dossier, YEP editor Paul Napier said: "The Leeds Needs An Arena campaign has had great support, both from our readers and from many, many bands who've said they want to perform in our city.
"Leeds should have had an arena long ago and I'm heartened that we now seem closer than ever to having one. Our readers, as ever, have done us proud."
Last month senior councillors agreed to continue working on plans for a 12,500-seater facility at an as-yet-unconfirmed location in Leeds.
Consultants brought in by the local authority estimate such a complex would cost around £50m.
Up to £20m is likely to have to come from public sector bodies like the council and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.
The task of selecting a potential operator, developer and site for the proposed arena is due to begin next month.
A final decision on whether the project should go ahead is not expected to be taken before spring 2008, however.
Experts say an arena would be worth as much as £28m each year to the Leeds economy.
Stars who have backed the YEP's campaign include Embrace, Westlife, Sugababes and McFly.
