All-time favourites with a twist by the St. Monica Choir
Monday, 25 June, 2007

The St. Monica Choir, under the direction of its foundress Sr. Beniamina Portelli, has become synonymous with versatility and the choir's forthcoming concert surely goes to prove this! Name That Tune... a collection of well-known popular and classic tunes... with a twist!

The twist? Have you ever thought of putting words to Mozart's 40th Symphony? Or get a choir to sound like an orchestra mimicking its various sounds to the tunes of Strauss' Blue Danube and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker Suite'?

Whether you were a teenager in the 60s or born in the 90s, you will be able to hum to the tunes that will be sung. The former will recall The Monkees version of I'm a Believer whilst for the latter, it simply means 'Shrek'! You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban might not mean anything to some, but mention Westlife, and... ah yes!!

Stand by Me and That's What Friends are For conjure images of sixth form and university days for anyone in his 20s or 30s, but are sung as universal friendship anthems till today. For the romantics at heart, the choir will perform Come What May from 'Moulin Rouge' and Moon River from Audrey Hepburn's 'Breakfast At Tiffany's', whilst any rock fans will delight in Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. For jazz lovers, Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World will be a sure treat with its trumpet solo.

If all this sounds like a curious mix and if you're after a couple of hours of good music-making in a relaxed, familiar atmosphere join us and our special guest Claudette Pace on June 29 or July 1 at St. Monica School Hall, Gzira at 7.30pm.

Tickets at Lm3.50 / €8.15, which also include refreshments after the concert to celebrate the start of the summer season and the national Imnarja feast, can be obtained from all Augustinian Sisters' Convents.

All revenue from the concert will go towards helping the Augustinian sisters' mission in the Philippines, which the St. Monica Choir has been active in helping for a number of years. The Augustinian nuns care for abandoned, unwanted children and are currently extending their homes to welcome more unfortunate infants. Funds are however low and work is at a stand still. To add insult to injury, the Philippines were hit by floods and strong winds last winter.

The Sisters are appealing to the generosity of the Maltese to help them in their mission. Newborns are brought to their doorstep everyday and Sr. Carmen, the Maltese nun in charge of the mission, does not have the heart to turn them away since she was also abandoned at birth and thus feels the plight of these children as her own.

Augustinian Sisters' Convents:
Mosta - 21 43 23 34, Qormi - 21 48 72 82, Gzira - 21 33 07 20, B'Kara - 21 48 62 38, Rabat - 21 45 41 21, St. Paul's Bay - 21 57 10 02.
