Major Ability Award for Mayo County Council

Mayo County Council has received a prestigious national award for its initiatives that allow people with disabilities to participate in the workplace.

At a glittering ceremony at Dublin Castle last Wednesday night, the local authority was named as one of two overall winners of the 02 Ability Award. Mayo County Council was top organisation in the public sector and the award was collected by Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Gerry Coyle.

In the private sector, Aura Sports and Leisure Management Ltd received the national award.

Of Mayo County Council, the judges said: “The organisation embraces disability and demonstrates this in a very tangible way as is evidenced by the fact that six per cent of its workforce has disabilities with an even higher percentage in individual public facing departments.”

Mayo County Council underwent a four-month in-depth assessment conducted by disability management consultants. Access Ability, and after three days of judging by experts in the fields of business and corporate affairs, disability management, equality management and people with disabilities, it was selected as one of the two final winners.

The awards were presented by President Mary McAleese, Chief Executive of O2 Ireland Danuta Gray, and businessmen Denis O’Brien, Dermot Desmond and Eddie Jordan. The six category awards were presented by rugby player Brian O'Driscoll, Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, the first ever Big Brother winner Craig Phillips, Big Brother runner up and RTÉ presenter Anna Nolan, broadcaster, Claire Byrne and former Rose of Tralee and Mayo native Aoibhinn Ní Shuilleabhain.

The awards show, which was hosted by broadcaster Ryan Tubridy, and Caroline Casey, was broadcast on RTÉ One last night (Thursday).
