Helen Pugh’s neighbours have stopped taking a second glance when music mogul Pete Waterman walks up her drive. They were not surprised when eighties pop star Yazz stayed at Helen’s house for a week, nor when she went to meet Billy Ocean, R Kelly, Lulu and the members of Steps. “Pete Waterman regularly comes to the house for dinner,” says Helen, from Aldridge. “At first, I didn’t know what to cook and thought I had to do something special because it was Pete Waterman. “Now he is like part of the family and gets what everyone else does. “In fact, he loves faggots and peas and once I even cooked it and sent it back to London for him.” Helen’s brother is record producer Steve Jenkins, who has helped to launch more than 160 top 40 hits for stars including Kylie Minogue, Steps, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys, The Stone Roses and 2 Unlimited. Helen says: “When we were growing up Steve had a small record player and a lot of Beatles LPs – his music always used to wake me up on a Sunday morning. “He left home and headed to London to work for Jive Records. They set up a promotions company, where he worked for a few years, before being moved to the main organisation where he worked up to the position of managing director. “It hasn’t been until the last 15 years that the company really took off and that is when he started to work with Britney, Justin, Steps and Billy Ocean. “It was lovely to meet Kylie after one of her concerts. She was very friendly and was keen to meet my two children Sally and David. “We met the Backstreet Boys when they were at the NEC, Shane from Westlife, Lulu and Chris Rea. Yazz came to stay with us when she was doing some work with UB40 at their recording studio in Birmingham. “I was nervous when we went to see R Kelly,” says Helen, aged 50. “Steve had to knock on his dressing room door and we walked through lots of rooms before we got to R Kelly and it was just a shock to see him.” Helen says she is proud of Steven, who rarely talks about who he is signing next. “Steve is very cool and calm about what he does and because of that I don’t talk about it much. My neighbours were surprised when they realised who I was related to. “Even though there are a lot of big names that Steve has signed there are a few smaller bands that have done well. “Steve’s job is exciting but very hard work, although he still enjoys going to watch Walsall football matches and he likes to have a game of golf.” Helen says Steve has seen Britney’s recent turmoils but insists she remains a good artist through it all. “Britney is a good entertainer and dancer and that’s what Steve sticks to,” she says. She was really young when she first started out and even though she has changed she is still very talented. It is great to meet these stars and hear about their lives. We get to live a little bit of the life of the rich and famous for a while before we have to go back to our normal lives.” Express and star |
