Westlife: the nicest guys in showbiz

Saturday October 22 2011

They made millions from stools, suits and ballads.

They enjoyed an endless stream of number ones and sell-out tours.

But manager Louis Walsh was on the money this week when he paid tribute to Westlife as the "nicest guys" he had ever dealt with.

They were like that for journalists, too.

The Diary had plenty of dealings with them over the years, right back to our first meeting in Belfast many years ago, when I did a cover story with them for UK magazine Smash Hits.

There was plenty to write about when, on the first date, Kian was left dangling 50 feet in the air after his elevation cord jammed.

The editor of Smash Hits had a brainwave: 'Westlife Flying Without Wings'. . . Brilliant.

There were many more stories over the years but I won't bore you with them.

I won't pretend they were my best friends, or that I ever visited their homes, but, boy, were Westlife nice guys to deal with.

All the best in the future, lads, and let the stories of a re-union start next week.
