Rock-a-bye babies: Take That's Patience voted number one lullaby by 'Rock-a-bye baby in the tree top, I kissed a girl and I liked it.' It seems the sound of the bedtime lullaby is changing fast. Traditional songs such as Rock-A-Bye Baby and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star are no longer soothing babies to sleep. Today little ones are nodding off to their parents' karaoke versions of Patience by Take That, the rather edgy I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry, or Angels by Robbie Williams. Christina Aguilera singing to baby son Max as she films an advert. Her single 'Beautiful' came sixth in a list of 'Top Bedtime Tunes' sung as lullabies More than one in ten mothers regard traditional songs such as Rock-A-Bye Baby as outdated, research by parenting website, The Baby Website, has found. Many can't even remember the words to classics such as Hush Little Baby and Lavender Blue. Modern lyrics are more likely to send a baby off to sleep, the website's poll of 2,000 mothers suggests. Top of the tunes: Take That's Patience is the number one song for mothers trying to send their baby off to sleep, a recent survey found In fact, the Baby Website has come up with its own bedtime chart-toppers. They include Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera and You're Beautiful by James Blunt. Sweet dreams: The survey also found that mums prefer pop songs to more traditional lullabies But Richard Jenkinson, of children's music company Lullaby-Babies, was critical of 'inappropriate' bedtime songs. 'The lulling factor of traditional lullabies cannot be rivalled,' he said. 'Lullabies are repetitive with a medium tempo and appropriate words so children benefit from their soothing effect. 'Babies are more sensitive to pitch than adults and instruments like violins can go right through them. 'I wouldn't be comfortable singing or playing something with lyrics like Katy Perry's. 'Babies might not understand the words at a young age but they can take in a lot. 'Pop songs have such a short shelf-life, often with strange lyrics, so that when a child grows up he will wonder what on earth he listened to. 'It would be a terrible shame for children to grow up without classic and beautiful songs to pass on to their own children.' Kathryn Crawford, of the Baby Website, said: 'We were really surprised to find that mums would rather sing modern pop tunes than traditional lullabies. 'I expect most mums put the radio on when at home with the baby and the catchy lyrics make it impossible to sing anything else at bedtime.' TOP BEDTIME TUNES 1. Patience, Take That 2.
