Mum's pride in brave Johanna Honoured: Johanna Harris who dined with Westlife « Previous « PreviousNext » Next » View GalleryBy Kelly Thornham A PROUD mum has spoken of the heartwarming moment her daughter collected a Children of Courage Award. Fifteen-year-old Johanna Harris, who has a unique auto-immune disease which means she cannot cope with cold, was one of only 10 young people in the country to be honoured in a celebrity-packed ceremony at Westminster Abbey. She was presented with a medal by the Duchess of Cornwall. Johanna was nominated for the award by mum Sue Harris, of Hubberton, near Sowerby, and the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust, for which she has raised around a thousand pounds. Sue said: "It was very emotional. All the 15 years we have been battling this disease and it suddenly felt like there was a reason. The families of all 10 children had all been through similar battles. It was heart-breaking. There was not a dry eye in the house." Johanna was diagnosed with the disease, which causes her immune system to at-tack itself if she gets cold, when she was born. Her blood flow is affected by the cold and her body begins to shut down. It meant she had to wear sticky heat pads un-der her clothes throughout the day and during the award ceremony, whic h was organised by Wo-man's Own. Joh-anna has been in and out of Great Ormond Street Hospital since she was born and has been unable to attend school since she was 11 for fear of cold getting to her. During the winter months Johanna stays indoors making greeting cards, which she sells to raise money for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust – which raises cash to build a hospice for sick children in Huddersfield. Sue said the experience, which involved having dinner with Westlife and breakfast with Tony and Cherie Blair, was "mindblowing." Source:Halifax evening |

I saw her on GMTV a couple of weeks ago, the lads were so sweet they all gave her a kiss and asked her what her fave westlife song was. And then they had a suprise for her, they invited her to any one of the gigs next year and she gets to go backstage and everything. just shows how genuine and how lovely our lads really are x |
