Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.

Eli shook his head and tried to think. He noticed Annie filtering into the office, obviously concerned about what was going and what was being done about it. Outside, he also thought he heard another crunch and figured another crack must have appeared. It seemed like the floodgates were failing rapidly. “You mean climb on to the shelves?” he asked rhetorically. “I dunno if that’ll do it. Say it does, though. We wait for Emmett and the others to arrive and… what? They can only lure the rotters away if the rotters forget we’re here. Where are we supposed to hide on those shelves? An’ how long are we supposed to stay perfectly quiet?” He thought back to Emmett on his motorcycle, pied-pipering all those rotters out of that Home Depot parking lot in Lapeer, when they went on search for the missing runners. That was in a wide open area and Eli, Jimmy, Glenda and Brandon were at least a block out of sight. It would be a whole other feat to do that in a situation like this. Eli couldn’t see it happening. “Sorry, ’mano,” he added quickly. “Don’t mean to be contrary. But there’s gotta be somethin’ else.” Eli looked around the room. Randall was clearly at a loss. Annie was silent – she looked serious, but she wasn’t frowning. The gears in her brain were clearly working. Then he looked to Julie, and he frowned. This was not how he wanted her final hours to go. If there ever was a time for peace and quiet, he wished it was now. |

"If we can't leave then the office is our only choice." Julie said, rising to her feet sending her into a brief dizzy spell. She looked around. For some reason whoever worked her wasn't one for privacy as it had no blinds. and they had no time to stack boxes in the way. That was what gave her a stupid idea that might actually work. "Boxes. Some of these boxes are huge. Huge enough even for you." she said, addressing the last part to Eli. It'd be tight and the box would bend out of shape to accommodate him, anyone with half a brain would instantly recognize that somebody was hiding in it, but not a rotter. All they reacted to was sight, sound and smell. With the door closed they wouldn't be able to smell them over their own stink, and so long as they were quiet they wouldn't hear them. They just needed to stay hidden or at least covered by something that rotters wouldn't recognize as food. They just had to be still and quiet. But for how long? Any plan that involved them hiding may end up taking hours while they waited for the rotters to disperse. Julie might not have that kind of time. If she turned and started moving around it'd get the attention of the rotters, which may give the others away if they decided to barge into the office. |

Eli kept frowning as he watched Julie, so unsteady on her feet. He considered her suggestion, though, once his mind put together what she meant. It was definitely a better option than climbing the shelves. “You mean hide out in here,” he asked, still deliberating on it in his mind. “It might work. But still – what’s the next step? What if the rotters don’t leave? What if it…” He trailed off. The thought was physically painful. “What if it takes too long? What if Emmett and the others don’t get here in time, or what if they can’t lure the rotters away fast enough?” What if you die first? He asked the question without asking it. “Why don’t the dead – excuse me, the rotters – why don’t they attack each other?” Annie interjected suddenly. “What?” Eli looked to her. There might as well have been a lightbulb over her head. She was nodding repeatedly, presumably along with her thoughts. “The rotters seek out flesh. Why not each other’s? Why are they not constantly ripping one another to shreds?” Annie repeated. Eli shrugged, confused but at least a little intrigued. “I don’t know. Why not?” “I don’t know either,” Annie said. “But I have an idea. Back in Flint, Ajay was doing experiments with the dead.” Eli narrowed his eyes at the concept, but let Annie continue. “He was doing research. Dissecting bodies, trying to find the cause of their illness. He didn’t have much luck. But he did come up with one unusual theory about their body odour. He said it might be more than the natural smell of decomposition. He said their skin glands secreted an invisible but pungent form of perspiration – a kind of sweat. He never had a chance to look much further into it – but what if that’s the key?” “The key?” Eli thought he was following up until that point. “The key to what? To their smell?” “The key to why they don’t attack each other,” Annie clarified. “Which is, yes – their smell. They’re clearly incapable of complex thought. But we know they’re capable of sight and hearing. Why not smelling, too?” Eli sighed a little. “This is interesting, an’ I don’t even mean that sarcastically, but how does any of this…” He cut himself off as his mind caught up to Annie’s. His eyes lit up like hers. “We need to smell like them,” he said. “How do we do that?” “You killed some of…” Annie started talking, but then glanced to Julie, and her excitement took a hit. She finished up more somberly. “You killed some rotters when we came in here. Their bodies are in the corner. They should have everything we need.” |

Randall paused. It took him a few seconds to piece everything together. Her plan was to smell like rotters by using their bodies. The only way to get a smell that deep was... "Now I wish I had stayed in Flint." Jen cringed at the thought that Randall found himself thinking. "Are you suggesting we smear ourselves in their guts?" Randall asked, somewhat incredulously. "What if it doesn't work? What if they just turn on us when we walk ourselves into them?" He believed what Annie had said. But it was a trust fall; there was no guarantee she was right. If they walked into the horde of rotters and it didn't work, they were as good as dead. "I think Annie's right." Jen reluctantly came to Annie's defense on this one. "We don't have any better ideas and we're dead if we do nothing. I saw some nice designer coats in one of the boxes back there, I bet we can wear those over our clothes." |

"Okay. We'll try it. You guys stay in the office once we're ready. I'll be out here to see if it works. If it doesn't then just stay out of sight. Emmett and the others may still turn up." Julie declared. It only made sense for her to be the test run. She'd take a gun with her. If it didn't work then at least she wouldn't suffer. |

Eli was iffy on Annie’s idea, and iffier on Julie’s suggestion. If it didn’t work, she’d be ripped to shreds. It wouldn’t be pretty. The best case scenario would be her getting her gun out in time to blow her own brains out. That idea tore at his heart. It made too much sense to deny her, though. Goddamn. “Okay,” he said, giving the room a reluctant. “Let’s get those coats.” CRACK! He heard a hole being created in one of the windows. “An’ let’s hurry,” he added. |

"I know where they are!" Jennifer had seen the boxes herself. Apparently this warehouse had a lot of clothes in it; everything had either been filled with shoes, or pants, or coats. She led everyone to one of the boxes that she knew had coats in it as the sound of breaking glass echoed through the warehouse. She tore the top of it open and revealed a pile of various long coats and dusters that seemed lazily thrown inside. The sort of thing you might expect a flasher to wear in a park. "Right here." She announced. With time of the essence, she started grabbing the ones nearest the top and throwing one to everyone. She even found a few smaller ones for Connor and Kelsey. |

Annie took a deep breath as she grabbed one of the coats, then held it up to herself. It went down to her knees. Hopefully that would be enough. And hopefully this would work at all. The idea had sounded so sane when she came up with it, but now that they were getting closer to do actually doing it, she was starting to doubt herself. Julie’s offer was comforting but also worrying. She didn’t know how she would live with herself if she was responsible for that poor girl getting eaten alive. “Connor, come here,” she said, passing one of the coats in his direction. She looked back. He was frozen in place where she left him. “Connor!” she repeated more forcefully. He looked up, clearly stunned. After blinking a couple times, he wandered over. “What’s going on?” he asked, his voice soft and hesitant. “We’re leaving, honey,” she said. She didn’t bother explaining how. He’d find out soon enough. Nearby, Eli had picked out a women’s duster jacket – it was all women’s clothing. He wrapped it around himself, trying it out. He looked a little silly, but it fit just well enough. “Mierda,” Eli said. “We’re seriously doin' this.” There was another crack. Annie’s head swivelled and she saw a box by the window fall over. A rotter arm had poked through, and flailed about for a second fruitlessly. It had clearly gotten stuck in the glass. Even still, it was a bad sign. The windows were giving out more with every minute. |

It took Randall a moment or two, but he managed to slip the white duster jacket over himself with one hand. He was kind of glad he couldn't see himself because he felt absolutely ridiculous; not just because it barely fit, but because this was clearly a women's jacket. Of course, the thought quickly faded. This wasn't about fashion but about utility. He didn't want to spread zombie guts all over one of his few pairs of clothes. It was strange that he was so fixated on preserving clothes when their lives were at stake. "We are seriously doing this." Randall shook his head in disbelief, unconsciously emphasizing Eli's point. He glanced over and saw Kelsey slip into her own child's jacket. It was still a little big for her though, the tail hovered a mere centimeter from the ground. Randall knelt down and looked her in the eyes. He could still hear the sounds of rotters breaking through the glass; he could see the fear creeping into Kelsey's features as the facade she had been wearing was slowly being worn down. "You ready for this, Kels? This is gonna be pretty gross." "I-I'm ready." She stammered a little after taking a glance over her shoulder towards another cracking sound. "Everything is gross now." "Not like this." Jen made an offhanded comment as she pulled on the collar of her own coat; she almost looked like a private eye. "I got a feeling this is gonna be real bad." "I doubt you're wrong." Randall frowned as he glanced towards the dead rotters in the corner. They were seriously getting ready to smear dead rotter all over themselves. Obvious health risks aside, he could only be glad that nobody here had any big meals recently. |

Julie winced as she put her arms through her new coat. She also managed to find a hat for herself, which she bundled her hair up beneath. They needed to cover their heads too, and she was not putting that shit in her hair. The last item to complete the outfit was a newly filled magazine for her pistol. Once it was loaded she tucked the gun into the front of her pants. She chuckled as she remembered the reason Brandon had warned her against doing that. Didn't matter anymore. |

When the group was outfitted, they moved over to the bodies of the rotters they had killed. Eli looked at the one he had shot three times in the face – the one that had got the jump on Julie – and then looked away. The sight made him more pained than angry. He chose a different one, then whipped out his knife. As he tore the blade down the length of the rotter’s stomach, his face cringed and his body did the equivalent. He cringed some more as he buried his hands under his sleeve and reached. He held his breath as he made his sleeve wet with gore, then pulled out to dab it all over the rest of himself. He was about as repulsed as he’d ever been. He imagined the string of blasphemy Jeff would unleash if he was here. It would have annoyed him in the moment, but Jeff would have been right to say it all. Nearby, Annie did roughly the same thing with another body that Randall had kindly opened up for her. She had plastic gloves in her bag – part of her medical supplies – but not enough to afford giving them out to each person. Instead, she took two for herself and one for Randall, and they were doing the job for their kids, Jen, and Julie. Eli watched them as he slowly worked on himself. He tried to ignore the sound of cracking glass and the thud of the occasional box that fell over, allowing another beam of sunlight into the dark warehouse. Annie, at least, was in full-on medical professional mode. Eli recognised her look of concentration. She was wearing it that first night in Flint, when was assessing and operating on Willow. Her son was a different story, however. His look of shock was wearing off and it was getting replaced with a look that combined fear and disgust. At least he was keeping silent for now. If Julie proved this could work, he would need to keep that up. “It’s going to be okay,” Annie said to him. “Just stay strong. I know you can do this, sweetie.” She must have recognised the look too. Connor didn’t say anything back. Eli hoped she was right – about the okay part, at least. But then he thought about Julie, and knew that she wasn’t. As if reacting to his thoughts, Annie moved on to helping Julie next. With her gloved hand, she slathered the rotter’s disgusting inner juices over Julie’s borrowed clothing and hat. An idea seemed to strike her as she worked. She tilted her head. “Randall,” she said, almost off-handedly. “Do you mind getting me a few of their fingers?” |

Randall had just finished slathering rotter meat all over Kelsey's borrowed clothing. All of the fear she had earlier was instead replaced with a look of sheer disgust; he almost thought she was going to vomit a couple of times but she managed to hold it in. Not that he could blame her. Anybody who thought a regular body smelled bad after you cracked it open had obviously not dealt with one that got up and walked around for weeks after it actually had died. "Is this going to actually work, daddy?" Kelsey shivered. "It will." Randall assured her, uncertain of it himself. With no time to question Annie's odd request, he picked up his knife and sliced four off of the fingers on the rotter that he had been working on. He didn't even ask what they were for as he handed the doctor the fingers. Nearby, Jennifer had started slathering rotter guts all over herself as well using Eli's strategy of sticking her hands inside the sleeves of her coat to serve as gloves. She looked like she was trying really hard to hold her breath and avoid eye contact with her work. |

Annie accepted the severed fingers in her gloved palm – and then held them up to her nose and sniffed. She couldn’t hide her look of revulsion. Eli could make out her throat slightly tightening up. “These should help,” she said after she recovered. She placed them in the pocket of Julie’s coat. Eli had to look away. This was getting to be too much. When he did, an idea struck him – and he was grateful for the distraction. “Jen,” he said, standing and addressing the teenager. “When you’re done, I could use your help.” With that said, he marched off back towards the office, where they had moved all their bags. He narrowed in on his own and retrieved his wrench. This was at least the second time it was going to come in handy. He was glad he and Julie had retrieved it from the shed by that cabin. That was only minutes before… He cut off his thought process there, focused instead on the task at hand. He marched right back out of the office and headed for the forklift. It turned out the warehouse did have one after all. Jen had discovered it while they were searching the place in the aftermath of Julie’s bite. He moved to the back of it, where the gas bottle was. He began removing that – starting by unscrewing the the coupling connection before moving onto the clamp. When it was loose, he waited for Jennifer’s help. |

Jennifer was a little surprised when Eli led her to a forklift, but she quickly caught on to his plan as he started to remove the gas bottle from the back of it. As soon as he had it unhooked from the forklift proper, she shifted all her weight to her good foot and helped Eli remove the still full canister off the back of the machine. "So, what are we blowing up with this?" She asked. This work was almost taking her mind off the fact that she was covered in rotter innards. Almost. |

“Nothing yet,” Eli answered without answering. With a grunt – and with Jen’s help – he lifted the cylinder into the air. “Help me get it back to the office.” * * * Annie was just about finished with Julie. As the condition of the nearby windows worsened, she struggled to keep up her façade of confidence. She knew she had to, though. If she didn’t show confidence, how could she expect Julie to? And if this was going to work, confidence was a requirement. “You have to move slow and stay calm,” she instructed, trying to sound like an authority even if she was working off nothing but theory. “If you smell like them, and you don’t give them any reason to think twice about you, then they won’t.” She smeared some more blood over Julie’s coat. The girl reeked now. They all did. “Are you ready?” |
