"YES." Brandon loudly declared as he stood up and ripped his shirt off.

He grabbed Willow in both hands and lifted her up over his shoulder before bolting up the stairs with his woman and kicking the bedroom door down.

"SEEEEEEEEEEX!" he sang in tenor on the way.

...

In reality he sat in front of Willow in stunned silence, his mouth agape a little. The sketch pad fell from his hands onto the floor as he stood up. It was full of evidence of his futile efforts to keep his mind away from her. Every second sketch was either of or included her. Brandon was at that moment happy beyond smiling. His face betrayed none of the joy inside him as he took Willow's hands in his.

"Yes." he said in a gentle but serious tone, his eyes fixed on Willow's.

She shoots! She scores!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

Willow's face softened in relief now that the awkwardness of asking 'the question' was out of the way. And she had gotten a good answer; she was worried he would say no. Not that she would be able to blame him for being concerned about her injuries or otherwise just not interested right now. She was worried he might be afraid of what he would find underneath her clothes. She had been too, but when she had seen herself in the shower, it wasn't as bad as she expected. The incision scar running from above her left breast, under her armpit and around to her back was the big one; the hole from the chest tube underneath that she made sure to keep covered; but everything else looked surprisingly minor.

"You just have to go easy on me." Willow lectured him with a coy smile. "Well, not that easy. I am supposed to do breathing exercises after all."

She lightly tugged his arm towards the stairs.

Jeff also looked around. He didn’t necessarily want an audience right away, but the room had started to clear up anyway. Eli had left a little earlier, Julie and Maxwell were somewhere else, and Brandon and Willow had just made a conspicuous exit of their own.

All that was left was Kelsey on the couch, and she had just been joined by Glenda. Kelsey was trying to pitch her on the game. They looked preoccupied.

“This is fine,” Jeff said, turning back to Randall. He took one last fortifying breath, and then jumped into it. “So here it is – I volunteered for this trip spontaneously, and the truth is I’ve been more hurdle than help. Even before all that, though, I was never much of a real member of the Kisco camp. I got the feeling people there didn’t like me. Not just Andre, either. And I know tryin’ to steal those supplies didn’t endear me any. Don’t tell me I’m wrong about that.”

He thought back to those early days, where his bad attitude and wiseass remarks had rubbed a bunch of scared people the wrong way. They reacted with hostility and he met their hostility with more attitude. It had been an unpleasant cycle, and he had to admit he was at least partially to blame.

“Here, though, I don’t have that baggage,” he added. “I mean, I got this group-that-fucked-up-Ethan baggage, but I think that’s gonna get unpacked. I think I can make a fresh start. ‘Cause before all that started, I was actually havin’ a pretty good day.”

He frowned at what he was saying. He was confident it was the right choice for everyone but he also had grown to like and respect Randall and the others, even after their early mix-ups and the public dressing down Randall gave him a few days ago.

“I want to stay, is what I’m sayin’,” he said. “I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me, and everything Brandon and the others have done for me, but the truth is I don’t think I’m cut out for what you guys do. I think I can make more of a difference here.”

He stopped talking – his piece was said. He looked Randall in the eyes and awaited his response.

* * *

Eli frowned and shook his head. “No, that’s not it,” he said sincerely. “You should feel comfortable offloading. We’re friends. I mean – we all are. I think we can call it that by now. An’ that’s what we’re here for.”

He paused, considering her expression when he came in. She seemed like she off in another world, much like he imagined he often did. He asked a question he didn’t expect to coming in.

“That said – is everything okay?”

Randall folded his hands on the table and closed his eyes.

He had expected this would happen. Compared to the last few days on the road, this place was like heaven. From the moment he heard about this place, he was pretty sure he would lose some people. Not to rotters, not to thugs with guns, but to electricity and running water. Things you could rarely find in the world anymore. The allure of them had captivated even him. For a day or so, a small part of him even wanted to leave Kelsey here; to promise her a life that was safer than one out there. That was out of the question now, but he didn't have that authority with Jeff.

"I beat Willow and Jeff at this game!" Kelsey bragged as she handed the controller to Glenda.

"I guess I'll need to be careful then." Glenda casually retorted.

Randall drowned out the noise of the round started on the TV and instead opened his eyes to meet Jeff's new face. He really did look different. A new Jeff trying to start a new life in Flint, Michigan. Only after a worldwide pandemic would someone try starting a new life in Flint.

"I guess there's more to this new Jeff than just a shave and a new face, eh?" Randall mused; he sighed deeply and leaned back in his chair. "Truth is, I might have tried to rag on you about this a week ago. But after everything we've seen since then, I can't hold it against you. This place is more than Mount Kisco ever was. It's more than most places probably are. If your decision is to stay here, I'll respect it. As simple as that."

Jeff smiled as relief washed over him. That was about the best reaction he could hope for. This had gone unexpectedly well. He was pumped.

“Thank you, boss,” he said. “Seriously. Thank you. Again. For everything. I’m not gonna miss the gunfights but I’m gonna miss you an’ everyone else. Whatever happens after you leave, I hope I’ll see you again.”

Brandon followed Willow to the stairs in a happy stupor. Once they arrived and Brandon got a look at the climb ahead of her he tugged gently for Williw to stop.

"Hold on to me." he instructed before picking her up, his arms supporting her legs and gently cradling her upper-body.

She clung tight around his neck with her good arm to spare her back the discomfort. Brandon had lost muscle since this all started but he was still strong enough carry her that far at least. He felt stronger than ever at that moment though. He set her back on her feet, gently as possible as always, and opened the first door he came to. The bed was made, but it still might have been claimed by somebody. Too bad for them. Tonight it was his and Willow's. As he closed the door behind them he placed his jacket on the outside doorknob to let others no the room was taken.

He turned to look at Willow. His breathing quickened as he almost charged at her, taking his shirt off and flinging it aside. His hands shot out taking her by the hips and pulling her into a passionate kiss. Slowly, gently, they lay down, Willow's sweater coming off. Brandon noticed her wince a few times with all this movement. She was being held together by thread, once her top came off Brandon's drive was almost unstoppable. She was so fair and so soft, her delicate features belying the fortitude her spirit gave her.

But stop he did. It was the stitches. It was a cruel irony that at the moment he wanted her most and she was so willing that he had to stop. Every stitch was there because of something she did for him. It was beautiful to him, it filled him with more love than he knew was possible. The reason he had to stop was the pain. She was ready, mentally and emotionally, but her body was still recovering from major major surgery. He pushed himself up on his hands, hovering above her with a look of painful longing.

"We have to stop. We can't have sex yet. Not yet." he said with a heavy sigh that almost a sob.

...

For a brief second Julie felt like she might want more than friendship. Eli definitely had the goods physically, and sexually. But he was also a lot nicer than he appeared outwardly, still bad enough to be interesting though. That qas more complication than she thought she ciuld handle though, so she dismissed it as hormones.

"I have to stay here. I can't keep moving. I want to, but I can't come with you to Chicago." Julie admitted to the weight on her mind freely.

“Oh,” Eli was taken aback.

It made sense, though. This was a nice place, with the comforts of the modern world before the modern world went away. From what Randall had recounted, it may not have been quite as safe as they thought, but it was still pretty damn safe comparatively.

Personally, Eli had made a commitment to getting the cure to Chicago. He was the one who recovered it in Mount Kisco. After the events of Ontario, Randall had lost a hand for it, Mac died for it, and Eli and others had killed for it. That couldn’t be for nothing. The only way he could begin to make any of it right was by seeing this quest through.

Julie hadn’t made that commitment, though. As far as he knew, she still didn’t even believe the cure was for real. He had to ask himself – why wouldn’t she stick around?

Her choice of words tripped him up, though.

“I… I understand,” he said, getting a grip. “For all its problems, this place beats the road. But what do you mean you can’t?”

"Once we get the cure to Chicago, we'll come back." Randall assured Jeff confidently. "I can promise that."

* * * * *

Willow laid on the bed in a state of shock that was written clearly on her face. She was already naked from the waist up, ogling a topless Brandon. She was more ready now than she had ever been. And then the train stopped. The excitement, the rush, the thrill that she had been feeling went down like an airplane in a ball of smoke and flame.

"I... I guess the scars were too much, huh?" Her disappointment was palpable as she gently traced a finger along the incision scar and the stitches that held it together. "I was... I was worried about that."

She pulled herself up to a sitting position. Her removed had been thrown too far away, she didn't feel like going to get them. She doubted Brandon was complaining anyway. She didn't want him to put his shirt back on, at least. Just seeing him like that still had her heart racing. She wanted him closer, but was realizing now that this was as close as he was getting right now.

"Sorry." She sighed heavily. "To put you on the spot like that, I mean. I guess I got a little ahead of myself there. Figured the first time was gonna hurt anyway, might as well do it when I'm already hurting, right?"

She forced a nervous laugh out of herself. Even a forced laugh like that made her chest sting. Maybe Brandon was right. Maybe it really was a bad idea.

"It's not the scars. No no no. Oh God, I want this so much. The scars are... they make me want you more. What you did, what you've been through for me. I love your scars." he assured her crawling up to her and kissing her again.

He'd upset her though and it shamed him. The idea she might feel rejected or God forbid unappealing to him was devastating.

"I know you're ready. Your body isn't though. This is important to you, and it's important to me too. The first time is... uncomfortable but this... I don't want you to be in pain like this. If it's going to hurt you this badly then I don't want to do it. We can wait. I know there's this uncertain future thing, that we might not have tomorrow, but I refuse to believe it. We're going to have tomorrow. Because I'm going to be there to make sure you see it, and you'll be there to do the same for me." he tried to explain the miriad thoughts and feelings running through him.

He kissed her again. For a long time. He didn't want to waste this opportunity though. Nibbling Willow's ear playfully he whispered to her.

"Sex might be out of the question, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy ourselves. You're hurt you should let me take care of you." he advised in a sugesstive tone, removing her belt and unzipping her jeans.

He kissed her again down down down.

...

"I don't like this place!" Julie protested slightly indignant.

"The water and power are awesome but the people are fucking weenies. I want to stay with you." she protested further.

She didn't know why she hadn't already told anyone about her pregnancy. When it came to the big stuff she was tight lipped. She didn't want to drain people with her problems. Eli was right though, that was what friends were for.

"I have to stay here because I'm pregnant." she explained flatly.

Eli blinked. Then he went ahead and blinked again. Then he blinked about five more times in rapid succession.

Wait, wait, wait, he tried to calm himself down. He and Julie had slept together, what, three days ago? That wasn’t early enough to tell, was it? He was pretty sure it wasn’t.

“…Kevin’s?” he asked, after too long a silence.

Eli's silence was starting to get uncomfortable when he finally put his question forward. Now it made sense, he thought it might have been his!

"Ohhh... hahaha of course Kevin's! Oh, Eli, your face. You looked like somebody told you you had an inoperable tumor." Julie cackled in pure wicked delight.

Eli cracked a smile in spite of himself. He didn’t find it that funny, but he was glad Julie did.

“Yeah, that’s… hilarious,” he said.

He didn’t know what else to say, though. Congratulations or I’m sorry? If he was Jeff, he might have said both. Instead, he kept his mouth shut.

Pregnant explained her behaviour at least. For the split second that he thought it might have been his, he panicked. He knew he wasn’t ready to be a father. He never had been or wanted to be, but even if he did, the thought of bringing a child into this world was scary as hell. It was bleak on an existential level and also a practical one. Loud sounds attracted flesh-eating enemies. He didn’t know a lot about babies but he knew they made loud sounds.

“I don’t know what to say,” he admitted.

He thought about asking her if she even wanted to keep it, but he realized she had already answered that with her announcement that she was staying. Flint may have been full of weenies, as she put it, but it was also surrounded by walls. She could give birth here and raise a baby. For all they knew, it might have been one of the only places on Earth where that was true.

“I admire what you’re doing, chica,” he decided on some words, finally. “It takes a lot of courage. I didn’t know him, obviously, but Kevin – I’m sure he’d be proud of you. I am, at least.”

He exhaled. His smile didn’t go away, but it did morph into a nostalgic one.

“Can’t help but think when I first met you, back at Brandon’s place. First thing I did was call you a puta and threaten to shoot you. We’ve come a long way in a week.”

Julie broke eye contact as Eli complimented her, a very rare display of bashfulness on her part. She looked back up with a wry smirk as he mentioned their first encounter.

"Ahh you called me a crazy puta." she pointed out as she got to her feet and made her way to the sink with her now empty cup.

As she washed cup out she turned her head to look at Eli with a raised eyebrow.

"To be fair you weren't entirely wrong on either count." she said saucily.

It was a kind of defense. It felt good to be talking to Eli. Of everyone in the group he was the one she'd opened up to most, despite their abrasive first encounter. She said no strings attached when she'd practically demanded sex from him the first time. This was feeling a little like strings to her, and the last thing she wanted was to make him feel like she was trying for more than what they had. She didn't want to jeopardize that friendship.

When he'd traded himself away to Emmett she'd called out and told him more would have been okay. Did he remember that?

"So." she piped up, "I showed you mine, how about you show me yours? What's new in your world? Any other interesting developments today? Because you look pensive, though I think you might be doing that for attention." she inquired conversationally.

Eli took a second, and then shook his head. He did remember her saying more would have been okay, but it didn’t matter now. He was going to be gone soon, she wasn’t. Even if he could articulate his feelings – and he couldn’t – they were irrelevant.

“I brood until people notice me," he joked with a smile. "Thanks for noticing, but… it’s nothing.”

He stood up before she could ask any follow ups, and impulsively drew Julie into a hug. A comforting one, he hoped.

“I’m gonna miss you,” he said genuinely.

There wasn’t a lot to add after that. A couple minutes later, they both rejoined the gathering in the other room. After a while, so did Brandon and Willow – nobody asked where they had been. They talked some more and broke out what was left of the drinks in the house until Kelsey fell asleep on the couch, and tiredness started overcoming the others one by one. Not Eli, though. He stayed awake well past dark.

Over the course of the rest of the night, he learned Julie wasn’t the only one who planned on staying Flint. Jeff – who looked like a new man without his hobo beard – had come to a similar decision. Eli didn’t blame him for it. He didn’t have as good a reason as pregnancy, but he seemed like he made the call honestly. He probably could be more useful in a supporting role here than as a guardian for the cure on the road.

Jeff may have annoyed him at first – and at other times – but Eli was going to miss him too. Jeff said he hoped to see everyone again after they left, and Eli hoped the same. Despite only knowing everyone for a week, Eli was closer to this crew than any he had ever worked with before. If he allowed himself to be cheesy for a moment, he would think of them as family. Jeff would always be part of that family.

Julie too. In her case, she was a family member that he’d slept with a couple times, which was a little messed up on the face of it – but still.

After their latest conversation, he was having trouble getting her out of her mind. He couldn’t help but imagine her ballooning belly and what her life would look like. He also couldn’t help thinking about those emerging feelings for her that had tied him in knots all of yesterday and today. They were irrelevant now – he was going, she was staying, and she was having another man’s baby besides. Eli didn’t know if that was a relief or a disappointment. His mind couldn’t come to a consensus on the issue.

He found his eyes drifting to the clock every once in a while as he pondered all this. Jimmy’s offer had also been on his mind. The more he obsessed about everything else, the more appealing something simple and physical seemed. He needed to get Julie off his mind. Maybe Jimmy was how.

And why not? He still had every intention of leaving soon. Tomorrow, even, if he had his way.

When the clock struck 12, he was on his feet before he had even come to a firm decision. He retrieved the Supergrade he had withheld from the guards. He didn’t know if holding onto it was a wise decision then or now, but he wasn’t about to let it go.

Jimmy said to go the back of the house at midnight. So Eli did – at first just to see if he had even followed through.

Quietly and carefully, he utilised his experience and natural prowling ability to sneak downstairs without being noticed by the others. He arrived at the back door to the house and opened it slowly. He looked around and saw no figures in the darkness. Earlier, there had been a pair of Spencer’s cop guards out here, sitting in lawn chairs and casting an unfriendly shadow over the night’s proceedings. They were gone now. Eli had to wonder what sort of magic Jimmy cast to make that happen.

It was the moment of truth. Stay or go? He chose go, then felt the cold night air on his skin. He stayed low and in the shadows as he crept through the backyard, and snuck through four more backyards to the north.

He arrived at Jimmy’s door. The stealth had made his mind more present, had temporarily cleared it all of the other doubt and indecision. He knocked on a patio door in the back.

Jimmy appeared on the other side right away. He slid the door open.

“Hey,” he greeted. There was a mischievous grin between his cheeks. “Come on in."

Jimmy stepped aside, giving Eli room to step past. So Eli came on in.

Under the haze of darkness, Cory was hunkered down behind an old station wagon that had been long since been looted for any useful materials. Although he didn't know it, it had been several hours since Eli's encounter with Jimmy; but the sun was still off by a few hours. He was under the canopy of a gas station on the corner of Richmond and North Center. Admiral. That was the name of the gas station. It was good that they found that scavenging crew the other day. The one they kept alive, Alex his name had been, was more than willing to divulge them on the location of this place after a little 'convincing' although he held out longer than Cory was expecting. It could have taken them even longer to find it otherwise though. But now he could see it; the walls of the place. They had been scoping it out all night, waiting for the right moment. The human body naturally entered it's lowest energy point of the day between 3-4 AM. A glance at his watch told him it was now 3:30 in the morning.

"Hey, Cory?" A voice buzzed on his radio. It was Jason at the east gate.

He had turned the volume low. He didn't know how far sound would carry out here, so he was playing his cards safe. So far, this community had no idea they were even here. The element of surprise was completely in their favor. And if what their captive, Alex, had said was true, then they were poorly armed by comparison. The people in the community outnumbered them 4-to-1, but Cory and his group had far superior firepower and organization. And the element of surprise. It looked pretty well off, all things considered. It was not anywhere near as fortified as their old position back on the bridge, but it probably had enough supplies to keep them fed for months. That was worth any risk.

"Ron's wonderin' if we should firebomb the place." Jason asked without waiting for a response. "Won't shut up about burnin' it all to the ground."

"Of course not, you idiots. That's the last resort. Save your firebombs for if shit goes downhill. I'd rather keep the place as intact as possible. Garret, is your team in sight of the service entrance our rat talked about?"

"Yeah." Garret's voice crackled back. "Just like he said; no guards. We can cut through the chain pretty easily too, just waiting for your signal."

"Perfect. You all know the plan. Once you hear me fire the first shot, everybody else commence the attack. And if you see a tall white guy with glasses, hold your fire and ask his name before killing him. I want our other little rat alive if possible."

Cory strapped the radio to his belt. Just to be safe, he turned the volume off as well. From the ground, he picked up his M16 rifle. His newest addition to it, a suppressor, was attached to the barrel. If everything went according to plan, that entire community would not make it to sunrise. Except for maybe a few of the girls. Whatever it took to keep Garret happy.

He stayed low to the ground and behind abandoned cars as he approached the gate. His black leather jacket, despite the decals stitched onto them, made for pretty good camouflage in this darkness. He had even put on a ski mask for this job. As he approached the gate, he noticed there were more than a few dead rotters by it. Looks like they had out against some sort of small horde. He might be more impressed if they hadn't hidden behind a wall to kill them.

Two guards.

Both on the inside, one on each side of the gate. They looked like they were distracted talking to each other; their eyes weren't even looking in his direction. Amateurs. They thought the walls had made them safe. He quietly placed his M16 on the hood of a Camry not too far from the gate. He slowly lined the sights on the guard to his left; an older man. He then shifted over to the person; a young white woman. He inhaled slowly. As he exhaled, he pulled the trigger. The crack of the shot pierced the silent night air; the woman was shot multiple times and fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes. He shifted his sights back to the man. Even in the darkness, Cory could tell he was stunned. His face and body were petrified as he was gripped by the possibility of an attack. Before he could scream, before he could call for help, Cory pulled the trigger again. Another crack. The bullets slammed into the man's chest and he crumpled just like the woman before him had.

The guards were dead or incapacitated; Cory made a break for the gate. The bars of the gate had horizontal plates that conjoined the vertical bars. That was all he needed. With one hand, he grabbed the bars and pulled himself up, using the horizontal bars at footholds to push himself further up. Like a monkey, he scaled the full nine feet of the gate, jumped over the top, and then guided himself down to the ground, landing safely on the other side.

So this is the inside of the Flint community, huh?

Even though he had a silencer, it was only really hiding his location. Not the fact that he was here. Of course, the rattle of gunfire laying siege to the eastern gate was now the only thing anyone could hear; Jason and Ron's group. No doubt their attention would be drawn in that direction. That would give him a chance to pick off stragglers on this side while Garret's raiding party sneaked in through the back.

Cory double tapped the two grounded guards; one round in each of their heads. They wouldn't be getting up again. His gaze shifted to the nearest building. A optometry building. He saw a few lights still on inside. He walked towards the nearby entrance.

* * * * *

"Is it just me, or is it ever since these new guys showed up, it seems like everyone is getting shot or stabbed?" Ajay let out an exhausted sigh.

It had taken him a long time to stabilize Kevin. The knife had been in his lung. So much for Annie's Hippocratic Oath, she had nearly killed this guy. Even now, he was laying on the same table that Willow had occupied earlier. He had been fading in and out of consciousness ever since Ajay finished repairing the damage. He was glad that he had helped with Willow's surgery; he had to use the exact same skills to fix this man's lung. He was even using the same chest tube that he had just finished cleaning too.

"It does feel that way, doesn't it?" Candice agreed. "If it weren't for them though, I'd probably be dead."

There were bags under the Asian woman's eyes; she had also worked a long night. Annie was pretty much out of order after her ordeal, so Ajay requested that Candice help him out tonight. He had been informing that saving Kevin's life was pretty much of the utmost priority, since his testimony could possibly convict Ethan of attempted murder. No pressure there.

"Guess that makes it pretty hard to hold any hard feelings against them." Ajay sighed. "We've done all we can for him. He's gonna pull through, but I don't really want to leave him alone. Especially after what he did to Annie's husband. He could be dangerous."

"Maybe I can convince one of the guards outside to watch over him." Candice suggested.

"Probably for the best. Even injured, I'd feel better if he was under armed watch." Ajay agreed. "Could you tidy up the room a bit before you go though? I'm going to go check to see how Jen's leg is doing one last time, then I'll come help."

A few rooms further back in the clinic, Ajay entered Jen's room. She was awake and sitting upright. The injury hadn't been that bad comparatively. A single gunshot wound to her right calf. He had stitched it up and gotten her a new pair of pants to wear. The only reason she was here was just to monitor her for the evening.

"How's Kevin?" She asked immediately.

"He'll be fine." Ajay assured her.

Jen knew why Kevin was in here, but she'd had a difficult time believing the story. Believing Ethan had set him up to kill Annie's husband.

"How does your leg fe-"

Ratatatata!

The cracking of automatic gunfire coming from outside shattered the silence of the night like thunder. Ajay's entire body froze.

"Oh shit..." He muttered. "Oh shit, oh shit."

He darted out of Jen's room in time to see a huge man in a ski mask enter the front lobby. He made the M16 rifle he held look small. He made Emmett feel small. He was not alone in the lobby; Candice was staring at him, wide-eyed and trembling.

OH SHIT!

Ajay wanted to scream. But he couldn't. Even if he had wanted to, fear held a grip on his throat; he could barely even mouth the words, let alone speak them. The intruder lowered his rifle, aimed it at the trembling Candice, and pulled the trigger. There was the boom of gunfire; he saw the top of Candice's head erupt into a fountain of gore as her brain matter was plastered against the opposing wall. Ajay didn't need to be a doctor to know that she was dead before even hitting the ground.

Fuck me! Fuck me! Fuck me!

His heart was pounding like mad; he ran back into the room. He locked eyes with Jen; she looked as terrified as she felt. He looked around the room for something, anything; this one had a small storage closet. He immediately ran over to her and grabbed her by the arm. He helped Jen off the table.

BANG!

That shot was nearby. It was from Kevin's room. This guy was a fucking psychopath! He was just indiscriminately murdering everyone! Sure, Kevin was an asshole, but he had just spent the entire day keeping him alive! Right now, that didn't matter. He could still save at least one life; he opened the storage closet and literally threw Jen inside; "Don't make a sound."

He closed the door as quietly as he could.

Okay, he's coming this way. Think Ajay, think!

He had no weapons. He could barely stand up straight from the stress. The fear. The terror.

Kevin's gun!

He reached into his coat pocket. The M9 that had been on his person when Ajay brought him here. He had confiscated it after he arrived, but never found a place for it! He still had it in his pocket! Thank God! He gripped the handle of the weapon tightly. Oh God, he could hear his footsteps, he was coming closer! Did he know Ajay was here? Or did he have the element of surprise? Would it even matter? Ajay placed his body alongside the wall beside the door. And waited.

Randall was awoken by the sounds of a firefight outside the house. The sound that had become all too familiar to him over the course of the last week now sent a chill running down his spine. He was out of bed before he was even aware of it; rushing to the window to see what was going on.

"Daddy, is everything alright?" Kelsey's worried voice pierced the darkness.

He didn't answer. His mind was racing with possibilities. But only one made sense in his mind. They were under attack. He peered through the window in the bedroom and looked out across the front yard. It was empty! They were all over by the gate! He could see several of the guards taking cover behind anything they could find, returning fire from unknown assailants through the gate. So far they looked like they were holding their own, but if they fell, whoever was out there could break in. And most of their weapons were in the shed next door to boot! They had to get them!

"Randall!" Glenda threw the door to the bedroom open.

"I know!" Randall told her; he turned away from the window where he could see Glenda and Kelsey's faces in the darkness. "We're under attack! Get everyone who is willing to fight ready; we're getting our weapons back."
