"Does she have to be so loud...?" Willow groaned as she rubbed her eyes with her fingers.

Thankfully it didn't feel like a marching band was banding away inside of her head like some people described, this was more of a dull, throbbing pain. Maybe being forced to run around after drinking helped lessen the impact, but Julie's rousing didn't really help her feel any better. Now she understood why she never got drunk in the past; hangovers sucked. But no matter how bad she felt now, she was sure Jeff had it worse.

She glanced over at Brandon snuggling beside her and she suddenly remember what she had been dreaming about before Julie interrupted her. It had been quite the... erotic experience. The flesh of two bare bodies entwined, framed by a flurry of pink and blonde hair, a chorus of passionate moans escalating between them. Her body felt like it was on fire at the mere thought. It had been a really good dream before Julie interrupted it. Had the situation been different, she might have tried to make it a reality. But she was hungover in a house full of people waking up. And she had to piss like a race horse. It reminded her of waking up horny in high school, but this time there was actually a guy in bed next to her. A hot one. And she couldn't even take advantage of it.

God dammit. She bit her lip in frustration.

She spared the sleeping Brandon a quick kiss on his stubbly cheek before peeling herself away from him to go take care of her business.

**********

Willow was the first one down the stairs after Eli and Jeff departed outside, and looking better than Randall expected to see out of her this morning. She plodded heavily towards the front door of the bar; with the toilets out of commission, the unspoken rule was to go outside to use the restroom. Maxwell had gone out a few minutes ago and he expected to see a procession line of sorts as everyone else did. Especially Jeff and Willow. As Willow passed by, Kelsey jogged over to her and tugged on her arm.

"W-Willow? Will you go to the bathroom with me?"

"What!?" She was rightfully surprised. "That's kind of a weird thing to ask, you know that, right Kels?"

"Yeah, but... I don't wanna go alone..."

"Oh jeez... okay, okay." Willow conceded. "Come on."

"Thanks Willow! You're the best!" Kelsey beamed happily, catching Willow off guard again.

"Heh, no problem."

Randall met Willow's eyes and gave her a thankful nod, one which she awkwardly returned before escorting Kelsey outside.

Glenda followed shortly after, which prompted Randall to wave at her with his left hand; "Morning."

"You do realize what time of day it is, right?" Glenda sighed. "Besides, why are you so chipper anyway?"

It was true. Everything had worked out really well. He was happy and he felt he had every right to be. The loss of his hand, while regrettable, seemed minor in exchange for the second chance he'd been given. Although he did wish it would stop hurting.

"I'm not all sunshine and rainbows here." He reminded her. "I've done some thinking about the next steps for us while you were all asleep."

Maxwell limped through the front door of the bar and took a seat at one of the still standing tables and made himself comfortable. It looked like he was all ready to go now. Randall couldn't be surprised, professors were supposed to be timely. Or at least he thought they were, he had never gone to university himself.

Glenda sat down in the chair across from him. "What do you got for me?"

Randall liked that about her. She was always ready to answer a question. Very no-nonsense when she needed to be; but still able to be lighthearted when the situation called for it. It was a good attitude to have these days.

"Julie wants us to check out some pharmacies today before we lose sunlight again. But after that, we are going to need to cross the US-Canada border again. Another bridge."

Glenda frowned. Not that Randall could blame her. There was reason to be concerned about it after their last border crossing. That one part of the trip worried him more than any other coming up. Bridges were dangerous.

"Don't worry too much about an answer right this second." Randall continued. "I just want you thinking about it. I want a couple of heads working together on this, just in case it ends up being dangerous."

"I know you are going to ask Eli about it, but maybe you should ask Emmett's input too." She suggested. "We both know he's clever."

Randall didn't say anything about it. It was a good idea. And maybe it would help him feel integrated into the group and help Randall get over his general awkwardness around the man. But at the same time, it was hard to overlook the events of earlier so quickly. Still, he figured he would probably ask his input at some point. Maybe he would wait until arriving at Sarnia to make an issue out of it.

As Eli re-entered the building, he noted Glenda’s arrival and gave her a small smile, while moving directly to the bar without hesitation. Quickly, he found a rag under the counter. He grabbed some liquor off the shelf behind and doused the rag with one quick pour.

If the others had questioning looks, he didn’t glance up to see them. He just headed for the exit again.

“That was fast,” Jeff remarked, as he finished loading the last box into Emmett’s trailer.

“Yup,” Eli said simply.

He got in the truck and looked for the button that opened the gas cap. He found it, popped it open, and hopped out. A moment later, he shoved half the rag into the gas tank. He turned back to Jeff, finding him staring.

“Mac loved that truck, you know,” Jeff said quietly.

“I know,” Eli said, also quiet. “But Mac’s gone, and the truck doesn’t run anymore.”

Jeff didn’t respond.

“You wanna just leave it here?” Eli asked.

Jeff seemed to consider it – but again, no response. He just frowned.

“Okay then," Eli said. "So let me borrow your lighter.”

Brandon reached into the empty space next to him. Willow had woken up, he half remembered Julie calling to them. He grabbed a handful of sheets and groaned in protest as he roused himself. Shimmying over slightly he let his head rest where Willow had been lying, felt the lingering warmth of her body there and savoured the scent she left behind. A contented smile crept over his face and he rolled out of bed.

The last day had taken more out of him than he realized, he woke up hungry and still tired. With a heavy step he made his way downstairs, pulling his jacket along behind him as he struggled to rid himself of sleep. He stretched as he reached the bottom of the stairs and made his way to the others.

"Good sleep?" Julie asked seeing the last of the group emerge.

"The best." he confirmed with the same contented smile.

"Heh, I'll bet. Think fast!" she said tossing a packet of bar nuts at him, striking his flat in the face.

He let out a soft groan at the assault, not yet awake enough to offer more than that, much less think fast.

"Damn, bro, wake up." Julie chastised.

"I'm getting there." he confirmed.

He made his way outside and found a private moment to relieve himself. Noting Eli and Jeff doing something with Mac's truck on the way. The prospect of moving on felt unwelcome at that moment. He wished they could just stay there like this, just a little longer. He dreaded the uncertainty of moving forward, but the prospect that they could all be free of this. The thought of being able to do as he pleased with how he pleased, not having to look over his shoulder or keep a weapon within arm's reach was too powerful to deny.

He could take back his home, bury his family. They could go back to Mt Kisco and deliver the good news to everyone there. Establish communications with other communities and let them all know. Form some semblance of order in the world again and rebuild. What would the border community think of what they'd allowed themselves to become once it was all over? Would they consider all the lives they could have saved instead? Everyone would have to find a way to move on, but they could do it. They could really be saving the world.

Having finished his business, Brandon made his way back. Ready to move forward.

Glenda leaned onto the table, a hint of concern on her face as her blue-gray eyes skimmed to his hands. She paused in a rare moment of hesitation before speaking.

"I haven't had a chance to ask, but how does your arm feel?"

"Still hurts like hell. But I think my body is starting to tune that out. Thank god. It only hurts badly if I hit it against something."

Randall lifted the bandaged stub up to look at it. "But you know how people talk about phantom pain? It's weird... my hand hurts too. I can still feel my fingers. I swear, I can move my fingers and open and close my palm; but if I do, it just hurts with a searing pain. Even though I know it isn't there anymore... it still feels like it is. It's tripping me out, to be honest. I kind of want the pain to stop so I can test how much I can 'feel' without killing myself."

"That's one of the most messed up things I've heard all day."

"You've only been awake for what, 15, 20 minutes? I'd say that isn't bad." Randall smirked.

"You have me there, at least." Glenda shook her head in amusement. "I have to admit, I'm glad you're taking all of this so well. It makes me... happy."

She looked him in the eyes. She inhaled deeply, then exhaled.

"Randall, look. I know Elaine passed away recently, and you have nothing but my sympathies. But, despite that, I think I need to say that I..." She trailed off hesitantly.

Randall only rarely saw Glenda at a loss for words, and yet here she was. She looked unsure of herself for only a few moments, but quickly steeled herself.

"That I... I want you to know that-"

"Hey guys!" Willow burst into the bar, cutting off Glenda mid-sentence. "I think we are ready to go. Eli's gonna burn the truck, so we wanna be outta here fast."

"Shit shit shit!" Julie exclaimed with light-hearted excitement as everyone save Brandon, Eli and Emmett piled into thw SUV with Glenda at the wheel.

The passenger door of the trailer was open waiting for Eli as he lit the fuse. It started up and Eli made his way quickly over where Brandon held the door open for him. He fit in snuggly along side the other two men, with Brandon being the unlucky middle. This was a better alternative to being crammed in the back with Jeff though, at least he wasn't likely to get puked on.

They rolled on as the flames took the truck. With a roar Mac's truck was consumed by a plume of fire and smoke. It burned as a stand in funeral pyre for the friend they couldn't give that respect. Brandon didn't look back, instead he stared ahead wondering about the man to his left and what he was making of all this.

Had he had time for such ceremony with his brother or had he set out after them immediately? Brandon wouldn't surprised if he had done the latter. For his own brother he would have traveled on foot for retribution if he had to. And there Brandon sat between him and the man who killed his brother. This was going to be uncomfortable. Suddenly Jeff puking on him didn't seem like such a horrible prospect.

...

"Whoah, that's awesome." Julie remarked as she sat on her knees looking back out the rear window.

She turned around in her seat and fastened her seat belt, riding shotgun for a change (specificallyso she could have control of the radio).

"Goodbye truck. Guess what? I swiped some new tunes from the bar. We've got Johnny Cash, Motorhead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson. Basically if it plays in country bars I've probably got it here. Any requests?" she asked her fellow passengers with a raised eyebrow.

"It is pretty cool, huh?" Willow sadly commented on the burning truck in response to Julie's excitement.

Randall could tell she was thinking about Mac. Randall had been too, it was difficult not to. From the crammed backseat he shared with Maxwell and Jeff, Randall was the first to change the topic; he had said goodbye to Mac already and he wanted to move on.

"Give me some Lynyrd Skynyrd, I don't even care which song."

He used to rock out to their music when he was a young kid and teenager. Hands down one of his favorite bands. Even if it was just a small taste of the old world, Randall wanted to hear them play again.

"I don't know any of those people..." Kelsey commented from the middle seat which she shared with Willow.

"Then you're in for a treat, pumpkin." Randall assured her. "It's the music daddy listened to when he was your age."

"God, you're so old." Willow teased him.

"Hey, I know you're practically a kid still, but you can't tell me you don't like Lynyrd Skynyrd. That is impossible."

"I never said tha-"

"Well I can say it." Maxwell joined in. "I believe they are overrated."

"Hey, Julie. Put in their best song you have, I won't let Maxwell's affront stand unanswered." Randall ordered.

“Anything but Free Bird,” Jeff groaned from the backseat. “Pick something that won’t go on forever.”

He rotated his body to look through the back window at Mac’s truck as it disappeared into the horizon, until all he could see is the pillar of smoke rising from the wreck. He frowned, then forced that frown away. There was nothing left to be done for their fallen friend now.

* * *

Eli stared at the rear view mirror until the F-150 was out of view. He wasn’t quite sure what to think, and his expression reflected that. Now he knew there would be no more catharsis over Mac’s death. As senseless and as sudden as it was, now he had to move on. All there was left to do was move forward.

He looked over to Emmett, who just stared forward at the road. If he had questions, he didn’t ask them.

"Lucky you, it's a greatest hits collection." Julie informed them as she put the disc in.

In a moment the instantly recognizable iconic hook of Sweet Home Alabama came in. Julie grinned widely and slid down in her seat, her foot tapping along. One of the most notable absences in the world was music, there wasn't much time for it. It was a song about going home, despite home in that case being Alabama, the song was universal.

Julie wanted to go home, even though she feared what she'd find. Finding her family in this chaos was a practical impossibility if they were still alive. She missed her mom so much. She wondered how Kelsey must feel. And Randall too. They both lost the most important woman in their lives a couple days ago. Julie wondered what memories might be attached to these songs for him. Even the good ones could hurt... especially the good ones.

"Sweet home Alabama." she joined in with the chorus.

...

The others continued to drive on in silence following the SUV as it made the short trip to the supermarket they'd visited earlier. Brandon, Eli and Emmett approached the building to check for rotters. It hadn't become repopulated since they cleared it yesterday, so Eli waved for the others to approach. The SUV pulled up out front and the others piled out to see what they could scavenge. Brandon passed by the cleaning products and noticed the same brand of disinfectant he'd used the day before. A shudder ran through him as he remembered the sound and the feeling of the axe striking. Wordlessly he grabbed two bottles and loaded them into the back of the SUV. Always have disinfectant was now a rule for him.

The supermarket had been looted in the beginning, if food were their objective they would have been bitterly disappointed as that had been the first thing to go. Fortunately people had the sense to prioritize their looting to essentials, so niceties like soap and shampoo were forgotten, so were toothbrushes and toothpaste and the like. Brandon helped himself to a couple cans of deodorant, as nice smells were a real treat those days. The spices and sauces were pretty much ignored in favor of the easiest food products too. Julie opened her bag and stuffed her first priority in, pads and tampons, it might have been the end of the world but she wasn't quite ready to quit on hygiene. She also slipped a box condoms in, after all you never know. All in all there was still plenty to make use of.

"Just be careful of rotters." Randall tried to warn everyone as they each split to their own corner of the store to stock up on."And Kelsey, don't go anywhere alone, okay?"

Sadly, it was an event he couldn't really participate in. He was still a little weak, and didn't fancy running through a store picking out everything that came to mind. Besides, someone had to at least watch the vehicles to make sure nothing happened while everyone else was inside.

"You got your gun back, right?" Glenda asked him as he leaned against the side of the SUV to keep watch.

"Yeah, I did."

"Well... I don't know how well you can shoot, but I'll stay within earshot. Just in case." She assured him.

**********

Willow was right there alongside Julie. Feminine hygiene was very important to any woman. Sure, there was worse, but Willow was not about to pass up an opportunity to restock; especially since she would be needing them fairly soon. Using a reusable shopping bag she had liberated from the front of the store, she stocked up on pads and tampons, alongside the soap, shampoo, shaving cream, and razors that she had already gotten. She felt so vain picking up all of the cleaning products, but she did have a boyfriend now. Kind of.

"You know, I used to think it was awkward shopping in this section." Willow made conversation with Julie. "I would try to sneak in, grab what I wanted, and sneak out before anyone saw me. It's kinda stupid, I know..."

She paused as she reached the condom section and furled her brow. There were... a lot of sizes. Large? Magnum? Medium? XXL? Thin? Was that just a nice way of saying small? She was a little overwhelmed at the sheer variety. Passing by just to looking at it and actually having to buy something were two different beasts. She contemplated asking Brandon, but that might be a bit forward. So instead just stood there and thought about it. Awkwardly.

Well, she shouldn't bring him anything small. Or too large. Maybe the safe bet was just something a little flattering, but not excessive. She started throwing a few 'larges' into her bag; seemed like the safest bet.

"Hey, what are condoms for?" Kelsey appeared from seemingly nowhere and asked.

Eli was unnerved to be back here so quickly after his last visit. He had left that one feeling pretty frustrated. Seeing the bodies of the rotters he and Glenda dispatched earlier in the day, his mind couldn’t help but recall what was going through his head at the time.

The source of those previous feelings was standing guard outside. Emmett must have known this was the spot he had lured them to earlier, and must have thought being in there with them would have upped the awkwardness quotient intolerably. He was probably right. Of course, Eli had to wonder if they would get to a point where it wasn’t awkward. He hoped that finally getting away from this area would help.

In the meantime, patrolled the aisles a little apathetically, finding them emptied of almost everything he would have liked to scavenge. The others seemed to have a handle on gathering toothpaste and soap and other similar luxuries.

Eli noticed Jeff heading back to the SUV with a plastic bag in hand. He stopped his fruitless search and jogged over to join him. Predictably, Jeff looked like he was in bad shape – but the kind of bad shape people used to get into, before rotters and bandits were a persistent threat.

“Somethin’ wrong?” Eli asked.

“Yeah, 70’s rock,” Jeff said, slightly shaking his head as he made his way back outside.

Eli smiled a little, then decided to wait by the entrance for the others. He didn’t want to be the first one back in the cab of the trailer. Having Brandon there with him dampened the discomfort of the situation, if only a little bit.

Brandon was stocking up on aspirin and allowing his mind to wander. Ever since Eli's revelation he'd been wrestling with how to feel about it. He was disappointed, that much he knew. It deflatedhis self-righteous anger about what happened to Mac. He was still mad, and the border bandits were definitely in the wrong but now he couldn't claim that they were in the right. It was one person who pulled a trigger at the border but he held them all accountable, it didn't matter to him who fired that shot. They shouldn't have been doing what they were doing, and theyput that gun in his hands.

By that same token though, were they all now as responsible for Emmett's loss? How could Eli do something so pointless? He endangered Randall and Willow at the fort by doing that, and he endangered them all by bringing Emmett on them. It was Emmett's moral fibre that not only spared Eli but spared Kelsey, Julie, Randall, Max, Jeff and everyone he had an opportunity to harm. Part of him was furious that Eli endangered them all like that. Mac was a friend and a good man, but his death didn't justify murder and it wasn't worth the danger it put them all in.

He'd let Eli know how mad he was and then move on. Brandon continued shopping for bandages and antibiotic ointments before making his way out the front. Immediately he walked over to the SUV and produced some of the painkillers he grabbed for Jeff, he was also glad to have something to take the edge off his wound too. Outside of opiates he had to help Randall. They'd have to hit up a pharmacy for anything stronger. With that taken care of he walked over to Eli, avoiding eye contact. He stood next to him, staring ahead even as he spoke.

"I'm seriously pissed about what you did. It was completely pointless and inexcusable. I'm not so mad that you murdered somebody, but it jeopardized the safety of everyone around you. And the cure. It's dangerous enough already without stuff like that. I just wanted you to know that, and that even so I'm still really glad to have you back." he started in a calm level tone.

"I, and pretty much anybody else would have killed you in Emmett's position. That guy is a saint." he continued, looking over at Emmett.

...

Julie had never talked down to Kelsey before but this question made her consider how she would explain. If she should explain at all. She and Willow exchanged uncertain looks before Julie decided it should probably be her to handle it.

"A condom... is ahhh" she began uncertainly.

"A condom is a sex thing, it stops you from getting pregnant. You know what sex is right?" she explained as simply as possible.

Julie knew the basics when she was Kelsey's age, it stood to reason Kelsey would be at least that familiar.

Kelsey glanced up at Julie and tilted her head to the side.

"Yes...?" She started uncertainly. "Kind of."

She had general idea of the way sex worked. The exact logistic were obviously lost, but she knew it involved a boy and a girl taking their clothes off, doing things to each other, and then a baby could happen sometimes. She was also pretty sure it involved a boy's winkie somewhere along the way.

Willow sighed and knelt down on one knee so that she could look at Kelsey at eye level. "Do you know the difference between boys and girls?"

"Yeah." She sounded more confident this time around. "One day... you will start finding boys interesting."

"I already do." Kelsey interjected.

"Er, well... really interesting, I mean. In a different way." Willow looked lost trying to explain it. "Look, a condom is a piece of plastic that a boy puts over his thing to stop a girl from having babies. There."

"What?" Kelsey furled her brow in confusion. "A piece of plastic he puts over his winkie? That's weird!"

**********

Maxwell rummaged through another pile of garbage in the store. Nothing. He had collected some soap, shampoo, and a few articles of winter clothing that they surprisingly had on the sales floor. And a few sunglasses because he needed something else to fill his bag with. There was obviously no food and Brandon had already swiped all of the pain meds and antibiotics. If only this place had some food left over. He would literally kill for a candy bar or something.

He conceded that there wasn't much left for him to gather and limped towards the front where everyone was starting to gather.

"Trust me, it's the most sensible thing in the world. And things are going to get very weird for you in a few years." Julie assured the girl.

Julie was struck by a deep sympathy for her. Growing up was tough, but doing that without her mother to explain things and in world like this was one of the most painful things she could imagine. Julie wondered at Kelsey and Randall and the strength they showed. The loss of Elaine must raw for them both, only days old, but she'd never seen them fall apart. They deserved to be able to mourn properly, but there was no time, so they seemed to just zip it up. That must have been agony for them.

If this cure was real, they'd finally have their chance to process their grief and heal. They could all be human again. It was a nice thought, she understood why they had to try now.

"Come on, I think we're done here." she said offering her hand to Kelsey.

...

Outside the others were getting settled back in while Brandon set about cleaning yesterday's gore off of his jacket with some multipurpose cleaner and paper towels. There was astrange peace to the scene. In the distance a few rotters milled around harmlessly and the only sounds to be heard were the breeze, the small sounds of life like the distance caw of a raven, and the idle chatter of his friends nearby.

He finished his cleaning and put his jacket back on, reassured by its weight. With a grunt he climbed back into the cab next to Emmett giving him a courteous nod.

Emmett returned the acknowledgement with a courteous nod of his own, and then turned the keys in the ignition.

As the engine roared to life, Eli climbed in himself and closed the door. He didn’t get a chance to respond to Brandon’s short speech before, but he didn’t really have a response anyway. He pretty much agreed with everything Brandon said, and Brandon’s words couldn’t do half the damage he already done by torturing himself all this time.

Still, he felt a little affronted, as unreasonable as that may be. It was hard to take being chewed out, especially when he was finally starting to ease up on himself a little bit. It had all worked out, after all. Maybe that didn’t make it better – but maybe it kind of did. And if anyone had cause to curse his name, it was Emmett, or it was Randall. He’d rather take the abuse from them than from Brandon.

And he jeopardized the cure?! If it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t have the cure in the first place, and if it wasn’t for him again, they would never have gotten it back from the fort.

As those kind of protests bounced around in his mind, Eli frowned. He knew they were irrational and he knew Brandon was right – but a slight resentment still lingered.

Silently, he hoped it would just go away, and tried to reset his brain. Earlier today, he had reclaimed some hope. Now he just needed to hold onto it.

As Kelsey grabbed Julie's hand, she reached out with her other one and grabbed Willow's free hand as well, linking everyone together in a chain. Willow couldn't help but smile; she was glad Kelsey had come with them. Sure, she was a kid, but she brought something with her that nobody else really could; hope. Despite all of this crap, despite losing her mom and everyone she knew, she kept on chugging. She seemed happy. Willow knew that if she ever fell down Kelsey, Brandon, Julie, Eli, Randall, and Glenda would all be willing to help her back up. It gave her the strength to carry on.

They arrived outside as the Emmett's truck started with everyone already piling into the SUV. Randall, Jeff, and Maxwell took their spots in the back; Julie claimed shotgun once again, and Willow helped Kelsey into the middle seats with Glenda behind the wheel once again.

"Did you get what I asked for Willow?" Glenda asked the pink-haired woman.

"Yeah, don't worry. Though I don't understand why you can't do your own tampon shopping."

Glenda didn't respond and turned on the SUV.

As the engine began to hum, Willow considered what they now had in their possession: a newly refreshed stock of ammunition from the college, a decent supply of food, some cleaning supplies, and a new recruit. All in all, things could not have gone much better, barring Randall's hand. She found herself tentatively hopeful for their chances on the road ahead.
