It was the same voice as the one over the radio. It was him. Randall narrowed his eyes at the large man and tried to look intimidating. As intimidating as a bedridden man who had just survived a rotter bite could be, at least. He didn't think it was working. In fact, he was fairly certain it wasn't. Yet he tried to hold the weapon out steadily in front of him; but between his current weakness and fear, he wasn't sure he'd be able to land a shot even if he didn't have a hostage. After a few moments of an awkward standoff, he placed the gun on the nightstand and returned to his sitting position in the bed. "Fine. You've made your point." Randall threw his arms in the air as best he could in an exaggerated show of defeat. "Now what the fuck do you want from us?" ********** And Glenda answered by bringing the knife blade down on the rotter's exposed forehead, killing the old woman once again. "I bet you would have been a good dancer in another time." Glenda teased Eli briefly. There was little more time for joking. Behind them, she saw Willow watching the rear. All she had to her name was an empty HK and a blood alcohol level above the legal limit for driving; her rifle was still in the SUV and she didn't have much experience getting up close and personal with these things even when sober. It was probably for the best that she was just standing behind them for now. Another two rotters came from another nearby aisle -- a young man and woman dressed in what looked like their Sunday finery for church. Taking a lesson from Eli, she kicked her leg hard into the knee of the man. The resounding snap was followed by the rotters falling onto its face, where she left it for Eli to finish off. The female rotter she sidestepped around. As it turned it's body around to come towards her, Glenda grabbed its arm with her free one and twisted her body, throwing it into a nearby wall. She quickly pinned it from behind and slid the blade between the skull and spinal cord, severing the brain stem and killing it instantly. |

No sign of the girls. No sign of their kidnapper. No sign of anyone, just some long dead corpses. As he exited one of the offices he came face to face with something that made his heart freeze. It was a rotter, a small one. A girl. Maybe ten years old. For an instant he saw Kelsey standing there but this girl looked nothing like her. Her hair was short, and an orange color. Even though she'd been dead for some time now and her skin had gone to that unnatural color between deathly pallor and bizarre frozen rot, he could still make out the freckles on her face. It grasped at him, trying to find purchase on his leather jacket with her tiny hands, and even less effectively biting at his arm. With a gentle firmness he grabbed the rotter by the back of the neck with his free hand and pulled it off of him. It was so small it couldn't muster much resistance. With a a now somewhat practiced motion he brought his knife down into it's brain. He lowered her down gently, as if she were sleeping and withdrew his blade. Worry was eating at him now. Why were there rotters here? Had they been jerked around? Where were the girls? It was hard to keep dark thoughts away as he looked down at the girl in front of him. He picked up his rifle and made his way downstairs, trying to keep his nerves steady, but he had a sinking feeling that there was no point being here. |

Emmett shoved his drunk hostage forward, then grabbed the Mac-10 with both hands. He held it steady on the bedridden man, and hoped he wouldn’t risk any sudden movements. “I already told you that,” Emmett said. “You didn’t listen.” He let that sentiment linger in the air for a moment, before cocking his head. Now that he had a good luck at this man – definitely the leader, the one who responded over the radio – he could see a physical resemblance. He remembered Kelsey and her words. My dad is going to be really mad when he finds you, she had said. Emmett was pretty sure he had found her dad. “You’re the father,” he deduced out loud, without bothering to pose it as a question. Then he headed off the question he expected in return. “She’s safe. So is the other girl. And the man downstairs.” * * * Eli grunted back at Glenda’s joke, then went on the lookout for more rotters. He cringed as he stepped on one that Glenda felled, then watched as she pinned another one to the wall. After that, he tapped her on the arm, indicating they should get moving. He led the way down an aisle, and listened for moans, which were coming from every direction. A couple more of the forsaken creatures appeared at the other end of the aisle, and started marching to meet Eli and Glenda. Another rotter made its presence known by sticking a bony arm through the shelves. Eli turned to watch its futile flailing, as it gnashed its teeth and tried to grab them. “Fuck it,” Eli thought it and said out loud at the same time. He reached behind his back, snaking his hand under the collar of his shirt and finding the SIG Sauer P229 Brandon had thoughtfully secured on his back. He ripped it free and drew it, aiming it directly at the flailing rotter’s forehead. POW! Blood sprayed out the back of its head and it crumpled to the linoleum floor. Eli swung his arm around to the other end of the aisle. He gripped the pistol with two hands, closed one eye, and took aim. POW! POW! Both rotters collapsed, one right after the other. Eli opened his eye and kept moving. On the other end of the aisle, facing the refrigeration section, he pinpointed five rotters total, all shambling in the direction of the gunshots. Three on one side, two on the other. Eli took the side with the three. Anger and frustration boiled inside him, but he approached the rotters casually. When he got close to one, he put a bullet in it at point blank range. Then he kept walking, and put a bullet in another. The last one he kicked backwards first. When it fell on its ass, Eli fired two rounds into its face. He could hear the sound of someone walking down a staircase, and looked to a nearby door to an upper level of some kind. Whoever it was moving too fast and with too much purpose to be a rotter. Eli tensed up, readied the pistol. He aimed it square at the door and waited for it to open. When it did, he was both disappointed and relieved. “Brandon,” he said with a sigh. “Any luck?” |

The sound of gunfire put Brandon on full alert. He moved down the stairs with his rifle raised. It was Eli. Brandon was about to ask him what the situation was when Eli beat him to it. Nothing but rotters. They'd been fooled. But why? What was the point? If he wanted Eli why would he send them on a wild goose chase? "This place is dead. He fucking tricked us. I knew that prick was watching us or something. God damn it!" Brandon yelled kicking a product display over. Humiliation and failure were a powerful cocktail. |

Thank god they are safe. Briefly, that was the thought entered his mind. But at the same time, Randall could never be sure he was even telling the truth. He could be lying through his teeth with Randall would have no idea. Ultimately, it made his words empty. "I'm sorry, but I can't believe that until I see it for myself." Randall explained coldly. "On top of that, you just lured us out to a supermarket so you could come here and attack us while everyone is gone? You know better than anyone now that Eli isn't here." ********** Glenda was more surprised than she should have at the sight of Eli pulling out his gun and going to town. It wasn't like he ever respected the 'no gun' rule that this kidnapper had instated in the first place. It was his idea to have Willow pretend to hold him hostage. With a gun. With Willow still behind her, Glenda swiftly incapacitated the two rotters and followed Eli to the stairs, where she saw Brandon walking down to group up with them. "We need to get back." Glenda told them both. "Now." |

“I said bring him, and come unarmed,” Emmett said. “You didn’t do that, so now I’m here. I haven't lied to you once.” He felt more blood trickle down his nose, but he ignored it. He kept his eyes on Randall. “What's your name?" he asked. * * * Eli understood and shared Brandon’s frustration. He wanted to start kicking down displays right alongside him. But when Glenda told them they had to go, her meaning struck him like a bolt. “Shit, do you think…” He cut himself off. “Come on.” He started running for the entrance. |

Randall couldn't help but smirk a little. It looked like Maxwell had roughed him up a little. He didn't even know the professor had it in him; this guy looked pretty tough. "Randall." That was all he needed, or wanted, to say to that question. |

“Okay, Randall,” Emmett said with a nod. “Now you know I’m serious. Next time I give you instructions, follow them, and you’ll get your people back.” He advanced a little, and grabbed the M9 off the nightstand. With one hand, he made sure the safety was on, and then holstered that too. He was running out of room in his belt. “Your weapons too,” he added. He took a few steps back towards the doorframe, holding his SMG in both arms now. Despite the injuries he had just sustained, and the intensity of the situation he was in, his words weren’t infused with malevolence or menace. He didn't even sound angry. Really, he just sounded sad. “I don’t want to hurt them,” he said. “But that’s up to you now.” He took another step back, ready to leave. |

"W-wait." Randall called out to stop him before he could leave. His cold demeanor changed. Randall wanted to be mad and confrontational, but now that he was leaving, he just wanted his daughter back. "Why is Eli so important that you would take my kid from me?" He dropped his bravado and asked sincerely. |

Emmett paused. He slumped his shoulders without meaning to. The phrasing of that question hit him in a way he didn’t expect, and the sincerity had taken him by surprise. His sympathy demanded his response be just as sincere. “He murdered my brother,” he said – and his normally soft voice was even softer. “I’ll be in touch.” With that, he disappeared from their view. He finally allowed himself to turn around, before heading down the stairs, then out the building. * * * As Glenda drove the four of them back to the bar, Eli frantically suited up in the back seat. He strapped his police belt back on and slung his AR15 over his shoulder once again. When the vehicle came to a stop, he practically dived out, and his feet hit the ground running. Then he heard a motorcycle sound in the distance. He spun around on his heels towards the origin of it, but his eyes couldn’t find the source. With every passing second, it got further away. He wanted to hop back in the Explorer and pursue, but then he noticed the broken window and the open door. Alarm bells started blaring in his stressed head. His concern for Randall overtook all others, and he stormed inside. “Randall!?” he cried out. He raised his gun, even though he was almost positive he’d be walking in on the aftermath of whatever went down. He found Maxwell first. He was on his stomach, his hands bound behind his back in plastic ties. There was glass on the floor and a broken table, but the professor was audibly breathing, even if raggedly. He looked to be alive. Since he was okay, Eli decided to let one of the others see to him. He personally went for the stairs, climbing them three at a time before reaching the apartment and crying out. “Randall?! Jeff?!” “In… here,” Jeff said, sounding depressed, but at least a little more sober. “We’re okay… mostly.” Eli poked his head in. Jeff was leaning back against the wall. Randall was still on the bed. Both seemed uninjured. Eli needed to ask the obvious question. “What happened?” |

"Whoah, Doc. You okay?" Brandon exclaimed as he laid eyes on the aftermath of the fight. He knelt down and cut the ties around his wrists with the scissors he took earlier, and helped him to his feet. "Looks like some serious stuff went down." he observed. |

Glenda was in the room almost as quickly as Eli was. Upon seeing that Jeff was, surprisingly, in worse shape than Randall was, she knelt down to help him back up. "What do you think happened?" Randall retorted to Eli with an annoyed sigh. "It was a trap. I didn't even consider that possibility that we could be duped like this..." In his mind, it weighed on him that, had it been anyone else that set this trap up, he, Jeff, and Maxwell could have all been dead. Or worse. And to further He wanted to talk to Eli about it... but he wanted to talk to him about it alone first. It was too heavy. "Hey, Glenda, can you help Jeff downstairs and see how Maxwell is doing?" ********** "You should see the other guy." Maxwell made light of his injuries as Brandon helped him out. "Nothing broken I don't think. To be frank, I think he could have broken me fairly bad had he wanted." "Shit..." Willow murmured as she looked at the broken table. "Did someone throw you through a table?" "No, no... I did that to him, actually... built like a neanderthal though, he hardly seemed phased... I think next time it would be wiser to just shoot him." |

Jeff looked between Randall and Eli with a searching expression. He didn’t quite get what was going on, but getting beat up had dried him out just enough to take a hint. “I can… I can walk,” he managed to say as he climbed to his feet. He took a deep breath and tried to forget the feeling of a gun barrel on the back of his head. He thought instead about what that crazy guy had said about his brother. He must have meant back at the border, which was such a bullshit thing to swear vengeance over like this. Eli was just defending himself. They all were. He wasn’t, granted, but he was trying to make up for that. He tried tonight; it just hadn’t gone so hot. Fortunately, that hillbilly-looking dude was merciful as well as crazy, and hadn’t shot Jeff after he broke a bottle over him. Jeff wasn’t sure what to think about that. He also wondered if he would even remember any of this after he had a good sleep. “I know this looksh bad,” he slurred to Glenda as he started moving. “But me an’ the tall guy, we didn't roll over – we, uh, we gave him hell.” * * * As he watched Glenda and Jeff leave the room, Eli suppressed his frustration and anger and focused instead on his confusion. He got the feeling Randall wanted the door closed behind them, so he took the initiative and did it. “What is up with this guy?” Eli said when he turned around. “He takes the girls, he leads us on a wild goose chase, he roughs us up and he leaves? Is he just fucking with us for the sake of it? Is he just havin’ fun?” |

"You looked bad before we left, Jeff." Glenda started helping him down the stairs. "And you look about the same to me now." He tried to pretend like he didn't need the help, but it was fairly obvious to anyone that wasn't him that was not the case. "One guy, huh...?" She quietly mused. ********** "I think... I think I finally have it all figured out." With his elbows resting on his knees, Randall let silence hang in the air for a few seconds while he collected his thoughts. He needed to think about the best way to say this. He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. "I've felt conflicted ever since he left. I have been relieved and at the same time bothered. Relieved because my daughter and Julie are alive. I think I can safely say that. He broke in here this evening and made a specific point; that he didn't want to kill anybody. He was armed, he had us all at gunpoint. Had he wanted to, he could have killed me, he could have killed Jeff, and he could have killed Maxwell. But he didn't. He chose not to. But the thing that has been bothering me is..." Randall pursed his lips together and took another moment to build up the courage to finish. "He told me that he wants you because you killed his brother." |

Brandon made his way to the broken window and looked out. He strained his eyes as he scanned the surroundings. There were a few places somebody could be hiding out there but without binoculars or telescope he couldn't see them. This guy really was holding all the cards. He walked over to a table in the corner and dropped into one of the chairs with a defeated sigh. Somehow he just knew the day was only going to get worse. He was so so tired... |
