"Maybe you're right." Randall hesitantly agreed, as Roland seemed to be taking his time looking over the weapon. "We knew there'd be crazy people out there, but we thought this was more... localized. We thought this would be a short term thing, like those camps you see on TV after an earthquake hits somewhere, giving people a place to stay until things get better. We let pretty much anyone in, so long as they don't look crazy. But this... this could be bigger than we thought. This could be nationwide. Worldwide." The last word left him with a sinking feeling in his chest. He had never even considered the possibility of it before now. Maybe they had approached this situation the wrong way entirely. ********** "Yeah, smell ya later too, Asshat." Willow smirked at her Game Boy. Before the shit hit the fan, she had honestly not touched this thing in years. But she once joked with a friend that she would take it with her in any emergency because of how long that thing could run off two AA batteries. And she was thankful she did, her games and weed were the only escapes she had from this fucked up situation. Just thinking about it made her pour her focus even harder into the game, so much so that she didn't even know she wasn't alone out there until someone greeted her. The young woman peered up from her game and brushed a few strands of her pink hair out from her eyes. A cute guy she didn't recognize was standing at the gates? A bit surprised, the joint slipped from between her lips and fell onto her lap. She slipped the Game Boy back into her jacket and picked the joint up off her jeans. Or what was left of it. It was pretty much done. She frowned and tossed it aside. She then rose to her feet and stood up as if she was pretending she had good posture. Alright Willow. Time to make a good first impression. "So, uhh... who are you? Another refugee?" |

Eli didn't immediately respond. It was a heavy thought that Randall had just dropped, and there was nothing he could do to dispel it. The sad truth was, Randall was probably right. After a moment of impromptu silence, Eli figured Roland had taken enough of a good look at the Supergrade, and he withdrew his arm. He tucked the weapon back into his jeans, and looked back up to address the pair. "So look, I know you guys must have some thinking to do," he said. "Who's going to go, who's going to stay -- weighty stuff. How about I just leave this all here and let you get to it?" He reached for the straps of his backpack, and slid it off the table. Then waved his hands at the canister and the map -- which were still there -- to illustrate what he meant by 'all this.' "Me, I'd just like to stay the night," he added. "Maybe borrow a razor and some shaving cream. And I could use a holster for this thing, if you have one to spare. I have some supplies, I could even trade you for it." |

The Last Melon. Duh.
|
Roland had sat deep in thought through the previous exchange, staring at the gun, and only changed his gaze when Eli withdrew it. "What are we supposed to do with this?" he asked, ignoring Eli's speech. "Chicago isn't close and if this is as big as Randall thinks it is, it's gonna be dangerous to make that distance. Can't exactly Fed-Ex it." |

"Whoa, hang on a second, Eli." Randall interrupted before Eli could make any sort of response to Roland. "I'm not saying that it is your responsibility or anything, but aren't you a little quick to just drop and run on this?" |

Eli squinted at Randall, a little taken aback. The truth was, getting rid of the package had been his only goal since he acquired it. Even on the walk over here, just knowing he had it made him queasy. "Hey, you're damn right it's not my responsibility," he said, sounding a little testier than he meant to. "As far as I'm concerned, I did my civic duty by bringing this here. And as nice as this set-up is, I plan to be on my own way." |

"I'm Brandon, and yeah I guess I am if this is a refugee camp." If this was a refugee camp than there was a good chance they were in contact with the authorities. When everything happened he was surprised at how quickly things fell apart. How so soon after there were no more emergency broadcasts. How quickly the power went, and the water and the gas. His dad had kept their house stocked up on batteries and had a tank to collect rainwater. Seemingly they were well prepared for the end of the world. |

Randall wasn't sure why, maybe it was the stress of the new revelations and responsibility that had just been thrown at him, but Eli's decision did not sit right with him. "And leave us with the cure?" Randall gritted his teeth, his eyes like daggers pointed at Eli. "Out of everyone in this camp, you are by far the most qualified person to see this to Chicago! My little team and I are the only ones in this fucking camp that have an idea of how bad it is out there! We would never be able to deliver this to Chicago." Randall's face started to flush as his breathing rose to an audible level. But after a few moments, it started to subside and he continued a little more calmly; "In fact, forget about Chicago, 'mano, we don't even know if we are going to be able to make it through the winter." ******************** "Rad." Willow nodded. "We have kind of an open door policy and all, so-" "Excuse me, did I miss something here?" A familiar voice curtly interrupted the young pothead. "Who are you?" "O-oh, Glenda." Willow stammered and froze when she saw Glenda seemingly appear behind her. "This is Brandon and he-" "I know, Willow. I heard." The former cook's brown eyes focused in on Brandon. Her eyes scanned him up and down, sizing him up. Willow had always been slightly perturbed by Glenda, she seemed almost like a robot with her calm and methodical procedure. After a few moments, she finally met Brandon's gaze and asked him one simple question. "Are you the one that was following us?" |

Eli responded to Randall's outburst -- and the angry appropriation of his favored nickname -- by getting his guard up. He raised his hands in mock surrender and narrowed his eyes slightly. "An' I'm real sorry about that," he shot back. "But I'm sure you'll figure it out. Without me. 'Cause I don't remember signing anything that said I gotta go with you." |

"Wasn't sure how good a job I was doing. I'm good enough to avoid those things but I guess people are sharper... usually." Brandon confessed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable or anything. Didn't mean anything by it, I was just being cautious and I guess a little nervous, I've been by myself this last week though it kinda seems a lot longer." He continued, uncharacteristically unsure of himself. He wanted in. He wanted to hear the sound of people's voices. Talk to them, listen to them. Now he was here the idea of being turned away, no matter how unlikely that was, sent a chill up his spine. |

Randall balled his hand into a fist. For a brief moment, he contemplated taking out all of his pent out anger in one punch right on Eli's jaw. But he stopped himself and instead slammed his fist down on the desk; it wouldn't make him feel better to punch a guy with his arms out. Especially when, for all intents and purposes, Eli was right. This was not necessarily his war. But it didn't sit right with him at all that he could just walk away from it all. That he would without so much as a thought about it, especially when he had not lied about Eli being the best hope of getting it to Chicago. "I have a son in Iowa; my parents are in Virginia; and my wife and daughter are here with me. My sister came us to when all of this shit started, you know? Or she tried to. I found what was left of her in the street outside our house, gasping and clawing at anything that came near her. And every time I think of her, I think to myself... 'Are my parents doing that? Is my son? Will I see my wife and daughter like that someday too?'" Tears welled in Randall's eyes as he relived those memories again. They were burned into his memory so brightly that he could see it as if he were there all over again. "I don't know how you can do it, Eli." Randall had calmed down, but had instead become melancholy. "I look out at this wasteland and I would do anything I could to reverse it. Anything to give my daughter a normal life and my wife a sense of security. Even if this... this cure... is just a false hope, at least it is a god damned sliver of hope, which is more than anyone else has." The general contractor straightened himself out and narrowed his eyes at Eli. "You are free to spend the night. I just hope that, when you leave, you remember that you walked out on your best chance at saving the human race." |

"Is that so?" Glenda mused. Willow swore she saw the woman smirk. "Willow is right. This is a police run operation, so we can't turn people away." Glenda took the key from Willow and undid the lock, then pulled the gate open. "But it is in your best interest not to cause trouble. We do have rules. If you go into the lodge on the hill, talk to one of the cops. They will get you situated." Glenda explained to Brandon as she let the man in. "Willow, you're staying with me because someone needs to show you how to properly guard a gate. That's twice today someone walked right up to the gate without you even noticing." "Wait, what about lunch?" Willow protested. Glenda withdrew a protein bar from her pocket and handed it to Willow, who merely looked at it and frowned. |

Eli deflated. He had seen Randall tense up, only to relax a moment later. Now he almost wished he had taken a swing at him. It had always been easier for Eli to endure anger than disappointment. But still, the responsibility that came with that canister -- that was worse. "Hey, I'm sorry, okay?" he said, and he meant it in more ways than one. He threw his pack over his shoulder once again, and turned around. He left without another word, and walked down the hall the way he would came. He tried not to think of Randall's family, or his own family back in Florida. He hadn't spoken to any of them in years, and it was occurring to him now that he probably never would again. After his second stay with the Department of Corrections, they had stopped reaching out. Even before that, their relationship had been icy for other reasons. In the back of his mind, Eli always thought some day he might make it right, as impractical as that might be. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of coughing from the lodge, and he was actually glad for it. These were the kind of things he'd avoided dwelling on so far, and he wanted to keep it that way. He silently cursed Randall for bringing it up, then he turned his attention to his search for a shaving kit. |

Once Brandon had been shown to the tent he'd be sharing with two other people, he realise just how much it ment that they took him in. There were at least a hundred people here easily. From what he could hear, it seemed there was an illness going around. That was a lot of mouths to feed. Lots of people and clothes to keep clean. This wasn't even an official government setup, there were no emergency aid packages or anything. Just the local police and community banding together. He had to reflect though, there were ten thousand people living in this town and as big as this seemed that still left ninety nine percent of the population unaccounted for. He wondered if anyone else from Patterson made their way here. The rules, as Jerry explained, were pretty common sense. Don't steal. Don't fight. Food and water were rationed out, don't take more than that. People were assigned chores, you do those chores or you lose some priviledges for a while (unless there's a good reason you didn't, of course). Apparently the supplies were all being gathered by just a hand full of able bodied residents, so please be respectful of that. The place was Bob's house, so to speak, so please be respectful of that. It was Roland's show though, so definitely be respectful of that. Brandon set his dufflebag down with a grateful sigh, that thing weighed a ton at the moment. The housing may have been simple but there was a greater comfort in knowing he was surrounded by living people than even the softest bed if he were alone. He sat there a while just listening to the sounds of life around him. He could hear all kinds of voices. He strained to pick one out from the din. It was a kid, talking to his mom. He couldn't make out what he was saying, just the sojnd of his voice. Whatever it was he was excited about it, his mother had a note of humor in voice. How many families were in here? On that thought he looked down at his bag. There was more than a weeks food for one in there, a fortnight even if you rationed it. Brandon got back up, grabbed his bag and headed back inside the lodge. These people took him in, it wasn't right for him to keep so much food all to himself, even if he planned to leave, he conaidered a donation to be fair payment for the good turn they did him. That food would in turn help more people, there was an irresistible case for giving it over. As he walked back through the building he came back through where he'd met Jerry. There was a hispanic guy walking through at the same time. "Hey, ah, guy. Can you please point me to the kitchen?" He asked. |

Eli stopped in his tracks at the question, and took a moment to look over the guy that asked it. Pretty boy, blonde hair, rifle slung over his shoulder. Looked shell-shocked though, like he'd just climbed out of a fox hole. As if asking for directions didn't make it obvious enough, he was clearly not a regular around here. "Sorry, you're askin' the wrong guy," Eli replied. "Guess you're new around here too, huh?" |
