"Come on... come on..." Winona leaned in over the glowing computer screen. 95% chance to hit. That was practically 100%! Her little solider poked her head out from behind cover and fired a few rounds from her rifle at the unfortunate alien. The bullets proceeded to shoot right past the alien and impact an opposing car, which then somehow exploded. She watched one of her soldiers, which had been taking cover behind the aforementioned car, explode along with it. "Gah!" She groaned and leaned back in her seat, which rocked back along with her. "That's fucking XCOM for you! 95% doesn't mean anything!" She reached over her laptop, stuck her hand into a bag of stale tortilla chips, and stuffed a few of the salty delights in her mouth. She couldn't believe that she had missed that shot. Now the aliens were taking their turn and the brave soldier that had missed her shot was valiantly torn apart by them. This mission was going terribly. But she refused to save scum her way through this. She was going to beat this game fairly. But before she could, she swore she heard a tapping on the door behind her. Which was bizarre, nobody knew about this place. This was supposed to be her sanctuary. It may have only been a small office, but it was now her small office. She pulled the headset off her head and cautiously spun around in her chair. Cadence, her 2-year-old blue-eyed Australian Shepherd, was laying on the ground staring intently at the door. Was someone really there? "Hello?" She heard a muffled voice on the other side. A female voice. She couldn't quite make out who it was, but it was probably Anna. Nobody else knew about this place. And Anna always knocked before entering. "Anna?" Winona pushed herself out of the seat and opened the door. "What are you-" Winona's jaw dropped slightly. Her eyes widened. It wasn't Anna. "Shit!" She screamed. Instinctively, she jumped away from the door and tried to scramble toward her bow, which was resting on the opposite wall. In her frightened haste, she tripped over a shoe and fell face first onto the ground. * * * * "The right moment?" Willow chuckled and rolled her eyes. "God, you're so corny... You're just lucky I like that about you." She exhaled slowly. "I don't plan on dying before we get to California. But, I mean... just in case... it would be nice, you know?" |

Hank heard a voice. He was pretty sure that it was a woman’s, and that she cursed. Then there was a crashing sound. He raised his Beretta in response, but didn’t have anything to aim at. He was suddenly seized by an inner conflict. If Emily was in trouble, he had to help. It was the right thing to do. How could he stand by and let a girl face the danger alone. Granted, she used to be a cop, and she could probably lay him out if she wanted – but still, she was half his size and maybe half his age. It just felt wrong to let her volunteer to begin with. But then there was the promise he made Riley. And the fact that if there was trouble, he didn’t even know what he’d do when he found it. Would he have to shoot someone? He had before, but he really didn’t want to again. He settled for staying still and shouting “Emily, are you okay!?” But he felt shitty about it. |

When he heard the crash, Antonio stepped out into the hallway, but paused when he heard the barking and growling of a very defensive dog. RUFF! RUFF! RUFF! The priest frowned; that dog was ringing the dinner bell for any rotters -- or worse, humans -- that might be in the hospital. He immediately started doing sweeps of the surrounding area with his flashlight, looking for anything that was moving. So far, there was still nothing. |

Hank practically jumped out of his skin at the sound of a dog barking. Then he spun on his heels, and like Antonio, pointed his flashlight in every direction. He didn’t think through what he’d do if he actually found the animal in question. |

Emily didn't get a chance to say anything before whoever it was inside flipped out. From her reaction Emily guessed she didn't hear them coming. To make matters worse she had a dog with her and it was freaking out too. Emily pointed her gun around the door but kept it lowered away from the woman inside. "Jesus! Take it easy! Get that dog under control it's gonna get us killed." she said. ... "This is a hospital, don't they usually have a chapel? I mean it's not ideal but we've got a priest so w-" he began to say when the sound of barking interrupted him. Brandon looked toward the hospital and then back at Willow. "Is that a dog?" he asked. |

"Cadence!" Winona snapped at her dog from the ground. "Stop!" On command, the dog stopped barking. But she remained on edge, facing the door and letting out an occasional low growl in the direction of this armed stranger. In the meantime, Winona pushed herself back to her feet and raised her hands above her head; after that shameful display, there was no way she could arm herself before this woman shot her now. "Hey, see? We're cooperating." She said. "I don't want any trouble, miss." She mentally cursed herself for getting too comfortable while staying here. She didn't expect to ever see anyone else in this middle-of-nowhere plot of desolate land. It was made only worse by the false sense of security the electricity here gave her; the florescent lights overhead and the familiar glow of the computer monitor took her back to safer times. She had screwed up. Badly. * * * * * Willow furled her brow. "Yeah... I think it is." But just as quickly as it had started, the barking stopped. Willow had a sudden ominous feeling come over her. Had they found a stray dog in the hospital? Or was it something worse? |

"Neither do I. I was curious about the light." Emily said as she stood up freely in the doorway. The light overhead explained that. There was even a computer running. She'd expected an independent light source like a lamp or something, clearly power was already up and running here. If somebody was here then it was a safe bet the hospital had already been cleared too. "You one of the locals? I just came from Elko, I'm supposed to introduce myself to Billy Church." she explained lowering her pistol to her side. |

The dog had stopped barking. Hank could hear Emily talking. No shots were fired. Good signs, Hank figured, but that didn’t make the situation safe. He took a breath and decided to actually do something. They didn’t need three people guarding a hallway, while Emily was left alone to deal with whoever she had found in there. He gripped his pistol and approached the doorway and Emily. “Everything okay?” he asked cautiously, looking over Emily’s shoulder and into the room. |

Winona tilted her head to the side and lowered her guard. She was still a little shaken from the sudden meeting, but she was at least able to relax a little now. She knew about Billy and Elko, so she was probably telling the truth. And if she was from Elko, then she was probably at least a decent person. Saxon's people usually were. "It's okay, girl." She glanced at the growling dog. Cadence must have detected her master's relaxing stance because she stopped growling as well. She sat down, but kept her blue eyes trained on the new human that was invading her territory. "So, uhh... yeah, I am one of the locals around here." She answered, in the event that her clearly native features were not enough of an indication. Though she was clearly not dressed the part. Rather than looking like a stereotypical Amerindian, she was wearing jeans, a loose leather jacket, a beanie, and fingerless gloves. Only a necklace, made of blackened leather straps with an opal gemstone tied into it, would have betrayed her heritage. Another head popped over this new woman's shoulder and peered inside. This one was a man. She imagined this woman must have come with friends, so she tried to swallow her discomfort at the thought she was outnumbered here. "If you want to talk to Mr. Church... he's not here. Only I am." She slowly continued speaking. "If you would like, I could take you to the reservation to meet him tomorrow?" |

Hank looked around the room – at the dog, quiet and obedient, to the Native girl, who looked just as nervous as he felt. “It’s really just you here?” |

Winona licked her lips and gulped anxiously. She was suddenly reminded of every time her mother had told her as a kid to never tell a stranger she was home alone. And yet here she had done just that. By accident, of course, but she had admitted to it. There wasn't much of a point in trying to pretend she hadn't said it. "I, uhh... yeah... I am." She said, meeting the gaze of the man. "This is where I come when I want to be alone. I swear, no humans, no wendigos... just me and Cadence." |

"Sorry to cramp your style but we were hoping to use the place too. We've got wounded that could use some of the supplies around here, and like you said the place is rotter free so..." Emily explained. The whole town was relatively rotter free. That's a lot of work for just a dozen people or so. "Speaking of which, where are all the creeps?" she asked. |

Winona allowed herself to relax a little bit. The initial shock of the encounter was beginning to wear off and logic was starting to take over again. If these people were going to kill her, they probably would have done so already. Besides, they were from Elko, so they were probably not bad people. There were a lot of bad people out there these days, but the people from Elko -- or at least the ones they had met thus far -- were definitely not among them. "To be honest with you, a minute ago I thought you were going to kill me. If the worst you're here to do is cramp my style, then I'm okay with that." Winona exhaled slowly and leaned back against the desk. "As for why the city is empty, well... there weren't many here in the first place. In case you hadn't noticed, we're kind of in the middle of bumfuck nowhere." |

Hank gave the girl another look over as she talked. He knew he wasn’t the greatest judge of character – his experience with Noah, Alma and Lowell had proven that, and his time at Salt Lake City had proven it again – but she didn’t seem dangerous. She didn’t look it and she didn’t act it. “I’ll get the others,” he offered, looking to Emily. He then holstered the gun and left her to continue the conversation. Annie and Antonio were probably wondering what the hell was going on, so he left the room to fill them in. “It’s just a girl and her dog,” he explained when he found them, still guarding the hallway. “She says she’s from the reservation, but that she’s alone and that she doesn’t mind us staying the night. I, uh, I think she might be telling the truth.” |

Antonio pursed his lips and contemplated the situation. If there had been rotters in here, that barking earlier would have drawn them in. Same with people, now that he thought about it. "Thanks, Hank." The priest said. Still, there were a lot of unanswered questions. For example, it looked like she had power here. A theory he confirmed when he moved behind the reception desk, flipped a switch, and the lights in the lobby flickered to life. How was she fueling the generator for this? Also, where were all the rotters? This town -- and the hospital -- were seemingly abandoned. All of this seemed like more than one woman could do on her own. And why was she here instead of on the reservation with everyone else? Or better yet, why was the community not living in the hospital? It had power, which was more than most places did. Whichever way he looked at it, something wasn't adding up. As he thought about it, another muffled boom from the skies reverberated through the building. He could hear the air whistling from in here. When he glanced outside the glass doors, the last light seemed to have finally disappeared from the sky and the first signs of snowfall were already beginning to appear. "The storm is starting to pick up. Go let your sister and the other know that it is safe to grab their stuff and come inside. We can worry about the cars later. The rest of us will do a quick sweep of the hospital in the meantime. Just to make sure it's actually clear." |
