Brandon suppressed a sneer at the mention of that name. A very compelling part of him agreed with Connor about everything, these most recent events had taught him that he should probably ignore it though. To take a step back, try to see the bigger picture, and not lose sight of it the moment somebody pushed his buttons. They did the only thing they could in Twin Falls, Donnie had the drop on them. Just like today. If they'd attacked Donnie, they would have been shot. If they did kill Donnie, what then? What about his family? Brandon didn't know about the parents but Alex would have done something about it, then they'd have to kill him, and then they'd have to kill his dad most likely, maybe his mom too and where would that leave the girl? It'd be kinder to kill her too rather than let her get eaten alive. Maybe it was the drugs but he just felt too calm to feel too upset with anyone else about how things happened. He could be angry at king's people for their blunders, or at Donnie for being a cunt, the strongest feeling he had was just disappointment in himself. He was the only person he could control and he'd messed up. "No, we shouldn't have. We did the only thing we could. Can't deny that what happened today was my fault too. I took us out there, I was the one who put us in a bad situation with King in the first place. It seemed like the only reasonable thing to do at the time but... hindsight is 20/20. Donnie's gone. He's heading back north, we're heading west. There's just... no point being mad about it. Eventually Donnie's gonna get himself killed, even if he gets away from King's people and us, he'll get on somebody's bad side fast and they'll kill him. Just like Max, and Cory and all the others. They all get what's coming." Brandon said letting that bitter thought settle and fade. "I'm glad you did what you did today. I wasn't thrilled you put yourself in danger by coming back alone, but if you hadn't those things would have eaten me alive. And when you did what I couldn't... you saved my life twice today." Brandon said extending his hand to Connor. "Thank you." |

Kelsey tenderly touched her chest after the doctor had finished. Kelsey had counted 11 stitches. Thankfully it hadn't been a very deep cut, but it would probably still leave a scar. If they hadn't been surrounded by rotters, she probably would have thought twice about jumping onto and crawling over broken glass like that. Still, she had learned the basics of stitching and that was a helpful skill to know. She was surprised at how simple the process was. It was really just making sure the cut was clean and then sewing it shut. As long as she had the right materials and could remember how to tie the knots, she figured even she could make some passable stitches. Maybe. At least as long as all she had to do was close a simple cut. "We've been chasing them for days." Kelsey said without answering the question directly. "You already know how dangerous he is." |

“I have an idea,” Daisy said. “Is that supposed to be a good reason to go after him?” Kelsey didn’t answer that question, and Eli didn’t either. Daisy proceeded to check out his foot in silence, applying some disinfectant cream to the wound before wrapping it up again and conceding that he would probably be fine. The cultists in Salt Lake City had plenty of bad qualities, but apparently their medical treatment was not among them – according to Daisy, they had done a good job treating the wound in the first place. There was nothing much she or anyone else could do to help. “I’d recommend staying off it for a few days, but I don’t see that happening,” she said. With that, her examination was concluded. “Boulet will set you up with a trailer for the day,” she said. “You can wait here while I go get him. While I’m gone, just keep in mind that I keep a meticulous inventory.” Eli raised his arms in faux-surrender. He didn’t even bother being offended by the suggestion they might steal something. Daisy didn’t know them. And if she did, she’d know he was a thief – in a former life, at least. When they were alone, Eli turned to Kelsey. “We don’t have to stick around,” he offered. “I can find us a new car if I have to. There’s gotta be something with gas in it down the road.” * * * Connor wasn’t totally satisfied with Brandon’s justification, but he didn’t argue. And when Brandon offered his thanks, and his remaining hand, Connor accepted. “Duh,” he said. “I know if it was me or my mom, you’d do the same. I know you pretty much have already.” |

Kelsey glanced at Eli. It wasn't often that she got to be the voice of reason, but now was one of those times. Maybe she was just annoyed at the circumstances they found themselves in, or maybe she was annoyed that the doctor had given her a question she couldn't answer. Regardless of the cause, her words came out more condescendingly than she had intended. "We're in the middle of a desert. Who knows how long we'll have to walk before finding a car that isn't broken down or out of gas? At least this way we know we get a car that works." |

Eli was torn by Kelsey’s answer. A part of him was relieved – his idea was a bad one, he knew that as soon as he said it – but there was still the part of him that dreaded sleep. That part of him would just have to suffer, he decided. Kelsey was right. They needed help from these people, and this was the price. “Knock knock,” Boulet said, as he appeared again at the door to the trailer. “I hear you folks need a room. It so happens that one has recently opened up.” “Fantástico,” Eli said dryly. He stood up and followed Boulet out the door. Back in the sun, Kelsey walked alongside him. Eli placed a hand on her shoulder and looked down at her. “We’ll leave tonight,” he vowed. “Lowell won’t get far.” |

* * * * * After the day they'd had, Antonio was tired. Between negotiating the freedom of his people and Brandon's attack, the priest was just about ready to leave this small city behind him and continue westward. He knew the rotters were out there waiting, but the entire city of Elko just left a sour taste in his mouth that he couldn't wait to be free of. Which was truly a shame, as Saxon was a good man and his community was infinitely better than those New Dawn cultists a few hundred miles to the east in Salt Lake City. So he was glad when the car ride back to their old base of operations was quiet; understandably so, as Emily was no doubt even more tired than he was. It gave him a little bit of time to contemplate the events of the day. Not a lot of time. It was no more than five minutes before their vehicle pulled up alongside the house and was placed into park by Antonio. He and Emily moved to the front door and knocked to alert those inside of their presence, though he doubted it was necessary. Almost instantly, the door was opened by Willow. The young woman, dressed in blue jeans and a yellow sports bra, looked a little pale. Her face was wrought with anxiety, which lightened ever so slightly as she laid eyes on the woman next to Antonio. "Emily!" Willow shouted as she lurched forward and embraced the former policewoman. "Oh my God, we didn't know what was going to happen." "We've had a bit of a day." Antonio assured her with a sigh. "But everyone is alive and accounted for." Willow looked skittish enough, Antonio figured it was wise to get the 'everyone is alive' bit out of the way early. Especially considering what he knew was coming next. "Thank God." Willow released Emily; Antonio could practically see the anxiety melting off of her. "So, uh... where's Brandon?" |

Emily grunted slightly as Willow surprised her with a hug. Emily wasn't much of a hugger, she had her disfunctional family to thank for that bit of awkwardness. There were some exceptions to this. It wasn't an unwelcome gesture, just unexpected, she hadn't really considered herself to be on hugging terms with Willow though when she thought about it she'd been through more with these people in the short time she'd known them than with anyone else in her whole life. She returned the gesture a little stiffly but gratefully. Emily had been considering how to phrase the news about Brandon on the way over to very little avail. If she started out emphasising that he was alive it'd just make her panic a little so maybe it was best to just drop the bomb first instead of working through the events. "He's at the Lion. He got bitten out there, there was a fuck load of rotters on the scene, they had to remove his left hand and most of his forearm. He just woke up a little while ago." she informed her as professionally as possible. |

Willow broke the hug fairly quickly. Not only was it was easy to pick up on the awkwardness, it was unusual for Willow to do any hugging at all. "Sorry." She apologized to Emily after collecting herself. Though she knew it was due to how frazzled she was. She had been nothing but a bundle of nerves all day and seeing that something seemed to have gone well was a huge relief for her. A small part of her had begun worrying that she and Emmett were the only ones left. But now that Antonio and Emily had arrived safely, it was clear that things were going well. That sense of safety vanished when she heard what Emily had to say. "Brandon was bitten!?" Willow's eyes widened. The impact didn't hut her immediately. It was almost surreal; as if Emily had said something that couldn't possibly be true. For a moment, Willow could only stand there, dumbfounded at the statement. "I-I need to get to the Lion!" She stammered. "Right now!" She started to head out the door, but Antonio gently stopped her from leaving. "And we will be going." Antonio told her. "But we need to pack up our stuff here first. We are leaving Elko soon, we probably won't be coming back." Willow's lips curled into a frown. What did he mean by that? Why were they leaving? She had a lot of questions, but none of them came out; she simply stared back at Antonio. "Don't worry, Brandon will be fine." The priest tried to assure her with a gentle smile. "I spoke to him before I left and Annie is back there watching over him right now." |

Emmett was nearby when Emily filled Willow in the events of the day. The news that Brandon was bit filled him with intense guilt. The news that he was still alive and recovering filled him with relief. Rather than sorting through those feelings, he took Antonio’s advice. “I’ll start loading up the car,” he offered. “And someone should tell the Kellys.” Hank had returned to the house after racing to the casino to inform everyone that Brandon was in trouble, and that it was Donnie and Alex who had killed that guard. When he got back, he informed Willow and Emmett that help was on its way, and then re-joined his family. He was still with them now in the master bedroom, waiting out the storm. |

"Have they even left that room today?" Emily asked, but waved off her own question as irrelevant and a little judgmental. "I'll let them know what's up." Emily offered. Getting her own things together was a simple affair since it all fit into one bag. It felt good to have a gun in her hand again and be able to change her clothes. once that was done she made her way to the Kelly's room and knocked twice. |

Hank answered the door right away – both because CJ was asleep, and because he had been waiting on an update ever since getting back from the casino. The last he knew, Brandon was still in serious trouble. Riley and Ruby were seated around a small table in a corner, playing a board-game they had found in the closet. They both turned to see what was going on. When Hank saw who was knocking, he gave them a wave indicating that it was alright. “Emily, it’s good you're back,” Hank greeted. “Is Brandon okay?” |

"Yes and no. He got bitten. They had to amputate, it's still early days but so far it seems to have done the trick. He lost of a lot of blood and he seemed to be putting on his best act but I could tell he was weak, but he's stable at least." Emily explained. "Anyway, that's only half of the news. Saxon's people have issued an order; we have to leave. We and everyone to follow for the foreseeable aren't welcome in Elko. They're looking out for them and their's from here on. They've offered us a couple days for Brandon's sake but we're shipping out ASAP for Battle Mountain just a little more west. We've got a little info on the place already, we know there are a handful of locals who should be happy enough to leave us be if we'll do the same." |

It took Hank a few seconds to absorb the barrage of news. Brandon was bit, but stable; they were leaving ASAP; they were going somewhere called Battle Mountain that they knew was occupied – it was a lot to take in. He didn’t notice Riley coming over until she was by his side, a concerned look on her face. “Everyone has to leave? That counts for us too?” she asked. |

"Everyone. I think they'll still let people pass through but they'll be enforcing their claim to Elko from now on if anyone tries to stick around." Emily confirmed. |

Hank wasn’t sure what to feel. He hadn’t really thought about staying at Elko – after Salt Lake City, he was wary about trusting new people, and then all the conflict happened – but he hadn’t really thought about leaving either. He knew they needed to stop somewhere. Following Brandon and his people to California wasn’t much of a long-term plan. Riley, though, apparently did know how to feel. She’d been feeling that way a lot since Andy died. “Why?” she asked. “Because Brandon kidnapped their people? Or because you snuck into their base in the middle of the night?” |
