"I don't know. They might kill me if they're convinced I did it. Maybe they'll grill me about how I got in first, might use enhanced methods. Boss guy seems to like you, I don't think they'll give you the same treatment, at least not until after me." Emily outlined her take on the situation. "I don't think it'll come to that. I didn't do this, they should figure that out soon enough. All the same it might be a good idea to signal the others." |

“I want to believe that’s true, that they’ll figure that out,” Annie said. “Saxon seemed straightforward, but these days, I know not to trust one meal’s worth of experience.” She looked up at the ceiling, taking another second to gain her bearings. Emily’s all-too-casual theorizing about being tortured was not helping her remain centered. “But no – that’s not what I’m asking,” she said. “I'm saying, when Brandon figures out they have us prisoner, then what? Another war?” |

"I honestly don't know. Those assholes attacked us first last time. We haven't been harmed, and last time they had Willow, that changes things. But yeah, it might be more violence." Emily admitted. |

Annie closed her eyes took a deep breath, and tapped the back of her head against the wall several times. It was an attempt to exorcise some of her frustration and fear. It worked only a tiny bit. She opened her eyes again, taking in Emily in the soft light, giving her a close look for the first time. She frowned at the sight of blood. “I’m sorry, this situation is just…” She didn’t even know how to describe it. “Are you okay?” |

“Good,” Annie said with a sigh. “While it lasted.” The aftertaste is a little like ash, she thought. She wasn’t in the mood to get into it, or to dwell on it. “Signalling anybody is going to be difficult from this dark room,” she changed the subject back to their precarious situation. “Though, when I don’t return – or when you don’t – that might be signal enough.” |

"Yeah, might be hard to get a signal out, still what's the harm in trying? Still got the radio?" Emily proposed. |

The radio! Annie had gotten so caught up in her panic and frustration, she forgot all about it. It was still in her jacket pocket. Saxon’s men hadn’t patted her down, unlike the New Dawn cultists who had made sure she had nothing on her before locking her on the train. Saxon had instructed them to be ‘respectful’ instead. “Oh god, you’re right, I do,” she said. She fished it out, then looked at it for a second in the dim light. Three beeps, Brandon had instructed her. It might be more violence, Emily had just said. But she didn’t have a choice. She pressed down on the button. Once. Twice. Three times. Then she held the device out for Emily to take. “I just gave Brandon the signal we agreed on,” she said. “But you’re welcome to try and elaborate.” |

Kelsey's face contorted wildly as she stuck the roasted flower in her mouth. It tasted terrible! On reflex, she spat the chewed piece up of flora onto the ground. Then spat a few more times just to get the taste out of her mouth. "I told you these things weren't food!" The young girl grimaced. |

Eli gave Kelsey an unsympathetic expression, as he grimaced and took another bite of the stem. It was still really damn bitter. “Food doesn’t have to taste good,” he said dryly. “An’ I didn’t hear your snare go off since last you checked. Have you?” He swallowed the last bite down and took another. “Eat up.” |

Kelsey frowned and took another bite of the stem she now held in her hand. It was bad, but not as bad as the actual flower had been. Or maybe the power of the first bite just killed all of her taste-buds and left her unable to experience the full blast of bitterness. Again, Kelsey felt her face contort as she bit down, but managed to force it down this time. "Yeuck." Kelsey spat. This wasn't working. She needed food. She needed real food. And right now, her definition of real food was pretty wide; she would even settle for an old TV dinner heated over a fireplace right now. Or even another can of beans. She stuck the rest of the stem in her mouth, picked up another flower, and started roasting it carefully over the open fire. "I haven't heard it." The young girl answered Eli's question. At the same time, she glanced in the direction of the trap again. Not only was the trap empty, but she could see (barely) that the mechanism holding the trap together had popped out and the trap was sprung. A strong wind or something must have triggered it. Those traps are harder to make than they look. Kelsey complained mentally. We don't have time for this! We can't chase Lowell and Noah with empty stomachs! We need some damn food if we're going to get any sort of reve- A pair of eyes peered from the nearby brush. Animal eyes! It was something big, maybe a coyote or a deer? Didn't matter, Kelsey instantly reached for the assault rifle she had taken from the back of Lowell's truck and spun it in the direction of the eyes. BANG! BANG! BANG! Six times the rifle sang, every shot almost throwing the young girl onto her back. it was only through sheer willpower that she managed to survive the recoil of that thing from such a quickly drawn position. After the sixth shot, all that she got out of the rifle were the clicks of an empty magazine. The only magazine she had for it. But she was pretty sure she got it with at least one of those shots. "Real food!" |

Eli sprung up from where he was sitting, his stash of dandelions falling off his lap and into the dirt. His eyes dashed around in alarm, looking for whatever Kelsey had deigned to shoot at so suddenly. An intruder? he worried for an instant. Did someone…? That train of thought didn’t get very far along the tracks, because Kelsey shouted that she had procured ‘real food’ and Eli could make out a tuft of bloodied fur in the firelight. He exhaled his stunned energy, and without responding to Kelsey, he wandered over to the carcass. A coyote, he observed in disbelief. A dead coyote. A really fuckin’ dead coyote. Kelsey’s bullets had somehow made their way through the dark into the creature’s ear, eye, and snout. One even made its way through the coyote’s neck. It was actually a pretty gruesome scene. “Holy shit,” Eli remarked. “You got it. I mean – you really got it.” |

So I did get it! Kelsey tossed her gun to the ground and pumped both of her fists into the air. "Fuck yeah!" The 11-year old practiced shouting one of her new words. |

Eli glanced from the coyote’s body to Kelsey, still not over his disbelief. “Don’t…” He shook his head. Am I actually, seriously gonna scold her about language? he caught himself. No, I’m not. The gunshots were still ringing in his head a bit. He tried to shake their echoes loose. “Okay,” he said, trying to gather his thoughts. “Now what? Do we… skin it? What?” |

Kelsey walked over to the coyote and looked it over. She had hit it multiple time; not a feat she had been expecting. She must have gotten lucky. Some of Willow's luck must have rubbed off on her. Willow... Remembering a familiar name hit her with a pang of sadness. Willow, Brandon, Annie, Connor, and all the others. She hoped they were doing okay. She hoped they were okay. She didn't know if they had gotten out of Salt Lake City at all. Maybe they were all dead. Maybe they were still alive. For a moment, she allowed herself to regret coming here. There were still people back there that cared for her. That were as good as family. Nolan was dead and killing Lowell and Noah wasn't going to bring him back. She knew that. But at the same time... how could she live with herself if she just let them walk away after that? She couldn't. "Well, uh, I..." Kelsey stammered -- her thoughts were not at all aligned with what was going on in front of her. "We just... take off the skin. Brandon let me skin a few rabbits. It's gross but the skin peels off like a banana." |
