Annie nodded along to Saxon’s words, and was relieved at how reasonably he took her non-commitment. “Antonio…?” She started to ask why him, but stopped herself quickly enough. Of course he would think Antonio was their leader. He was the one who liaised with them originally, it made sense. That he was also the oldest man in the group couldn’t have hurt the assumption, either. She didn’t see the upside in correcting him so she let it lay. “Of course,” she said. “And thank you – I promise, my group will have a long discussion.” |

Willow remained silent. Thinking of Glenda was still difficult. The painkillers had numbed some of the pain, but the rest of it was just not thinking about it. "Glenda was... my folks... They got called out somewhere, when all of this started happening, I don't know where. This was like, before it got really big. When the dead coming back to life was just a headline on the National Inquirer. But I was stupid and rebellious against them and refused to go, told them I would just stay home for their business trip or whatever. But then it got bad. And I was alone. And fucking terrified. And had no idea where they were." Willow mentally recalled those initial few days. When the dead started to rise in numbers and cities disappeared off the map. It really felt like the end of the world. Though she didn't mention it, she had contemplated suicide at the time to avoid starvation or, worse yet, getting eaten by rotters. But at the end of the day, she was always too scared to take that final step. So she hid in the house, not unlike how Nolan had gotten by for weeks. "I hid in the house for days. One day, after someone broke into the house while I slept, I mustered up the courage to leave. I packed up some food and I ran, trying to find somewhere safe. And it was then I met Glenda, who was just roaming around and killing rotters like the badass she was. She must have noticed how pathetic and scared I looked, because she took me under her wing until we reached Mount Kisco. I never really asked anything about her at the time. She was just... the woman that saved my life, you know? She was quiet and difficult to know sometimes, but I could always rely on her to have my back or teach me something valuable. But I always wondered why she seldom talked about herself. It was clear she was hiding a lot of painful memories, but what little I gleamed from her at the end of the day never felt like the entirety of it." |

"The end of the world has been a new start for a lot of people, maybe that's what it was for her." Brandon mused. Brandon himself didn't have too many regrets from before mostly because he hadn't had enough time to make regrettable decisions yet. Starting over again now might have some appeal though, now he'd made quite a few. Maaybe they could have that once the cure was delivered. He and Willow and Kelsey could find somewhere peaceful to live and help rebuild. Realistically he knew the violence would probably continue a while though, with people like Cory and the New Dawn out there. "I'm glad you two found each other." Brandon said, resting his head on Willows as his weariness caught up with him. ... Saxon seemed pleased with Annie's response. He picked up his knife and fork and continued his dinner. The plate was empty soon after with not even a scrap left, if it weren't for the basics of manners he might have licked the plate clean. "So what about the rest of your people? What were they before all of this?" he asked as Caleb came and collected their plates. |

Annie felt herself loosen up a bit, now that the potentially-awkward part of the evening was over, and her stomach was full of food and drink. “Besides the kids? Antonio was a priest, he did counselling at a college, I believe,” she answered candidly. “Emily was a state trooper, Hank was an electrician, I’m not sure about Riley, Emmett – well I’m not sure about him either, actually. Brandon and Willow were still figuring it out, I think. And…” And that’s it, she realized. She had to suppress a frown. He couldn’t have been asking about Jen or Nolan, since they weren’t there anymore. Neither was Eli, not that she could have offered his background anyway. “I think that’s everyone,” she said. |

"You've done very well to come so far through so much it seems." Saxon commended her. Caleb returned a moment later with two more dishes. "The chef wishes to apologize for..." he began. "Mm-mm, you just repeat to him what I said before thank you, Caleb." Saxon insisted. Caleb excused himself again with a satisfied look. "We're not the only ones enjoying ourselves it seems. Mark is a perfectionist, it's why I had to have him. He hasn't been worried about his food since this started. It all feels almost normal again." Saxon explained. Again he leaned forward slightly to smell the food in front of him. "I missed this." ... Iris opened the door to her room gently. She poked her head out to check that they were clear. She gasped and contained a squeal as Emily pinched her from behind, nuzzling her neck. "Are you sure you have to go right now?" Iris asked as she turned to face her. "Mm." Emily answered ss she kissed. "If I'm gone for too much longer the others ae going to think something's wrong." she explained. "Are you coming back tomorrow night?" Iris asked. "Don't know. We might be leaving tomorrow. If we stay another night I'll be back." Emily assured her. "I want you again." Iris complained. "Mm." Emily answered with another kiss and another until eventually she pulled herself away. "Wait a little while before following me, it'll be easier to sneak back down for just one person, the door'll lock behind me and then you come down and bar it shut again." Emily instructed her. She came back for one last kiss before turning to leave. It was dark on the upper floors, the lights going out very early. Emily could see well enough even in that darkness though, all she had to do was avoid bumping into anything and making noise. She very slowly and gently opened the door to the stairwell. Inside was an echo chamber, in the quiet every tiny sound was amplified. She made her way down every step as carefully as she possibly could. About half way down the first flight the door on the ground floor opened and light spilled in. Two men were talking. Emily leaned over the rail and looked down, one was already taking his first steps up the stairs. Her heart began racing. If she went up quietly they'd catch up to her, if she ran they'd hear her. Her mind started burning with panic. Suddenly the door shut loudly throwing them all back into darkness. She heard the man on the stairs fall over. "Thank you for blinding me." the man complained. It sounded like one of the guys from earlier that day, Jake. "That's what the rails are for, fool. Not my fault you're clumsy." said the second which sounded lik his friend Romain. "It's not clumsiness if you're can't see anything." Jake retorted. "The door says, 'Keep closed'. It's a fire safety thing, if these are open the fire is going to spread faster." Romain explained. "If there's a fire in here we're all fucked anyway, wendigos will see the smoke." Jake pointed out. "That's true, Byron says keep them closed though. Why we calling them wendigos anyway? I mean they're eating people yeah, but I thought wendigos were supposed to be smart, fast and strong. These things are slow, not that strong and they'd probably have a low IQ for a bag of rocks." Romain pondered. "Dumb as a bag of rocks, man. Why do have to say it different?" Jake asked. "Motherfucker don't hate my erudition, my verbosity." Romain objected. Jake scoffed. "We need to keep the first door open or have the lights on in here, it's a safety issue too. Fucked my hand up." Jake said as he and Romain reached the top floor. "Maybe Iris can kiss it better, I mean you sound like a bitch, she might go for it." Romain mocked him. "Are you fucking kidding me, last week you twisted your ankle and would not stop..." Jake responded, being cut off as the door closed behind him, leaving the stairwell in silence again. As they were talking, loudly, Emily used the opportunity to climb over the rail and lower herself down over the edge. The two had walked right past her as she hung there, nearly stepping on her fingers as they passed. With a little grunt Emily pulled herself back up and over the rail resting for only a moment before continuing down again. |

Annie nodded her agreement, absorbing the smell for herself. “Mm-hmm,” she said. “Me too. So much has happened, I forgot how much I missed this. The way things are out there, I almost feel guilty enjoying food this much.” * * * Eli dug the pit, Kelsey drew upon the skills Brandon had taught her to spark a fire. After patrolling the area for a couple minutes and digging up what they could, they returned and waited in silence by the warmth. If an animal fell victim to Kelsey’s improvised trap, they would hear it. They just needed to wait. So they waited. And they kept waiting. Then they waited some more. Finally, Eli sighed. He held out his hand, with the fistful of yellow-headed weeds he had collected on their short patrol. “Here,” he said dryly. |

"I'd say you're owed it by now." Saxon declared. ... Emily unbarred the door she came through. When Iris came down she'd car it again. Rather than opening it and leaving though Emily turned back around and headed back inside. It appeared most of the community were already in their rooms. She could hear muffled conversations from the other rooms she'd passed. The lighting was sparse. Clearly they wanted to conserve power, probably only running on one small generatorand they used candles here and there, enough light to not bump into things but not much more than that. It'd make passing unseen easier, or perhaps less hard would be more accurate. She'd gotten pretty good at it while she was on her own, but creeps where a lot easier to fool than people. She spotted a figure across the lobby making his way in her direction. To her right was a reception area with several sofas. She crouched down and sidled over to it taking cover behind one. The figure turned right down a hallway and shortly after she saw light spilling out accompanied by the sounds of clattering utensils and conversation. She guessed that was the kitchen. Tentatively she made her way closer and clambered over the reception desk. The light and sound from the kitchen spilled out again a moment later and fom hear she could make out some of what was said. "Caleb, go downstairs and grab some more tomato paste." she heard a man said. The light dissapeared as the door closed and she made her way to the corner of the hallway as she heard footsteps receeding away. She peeked around and saw the same figure from before pick up a lit candle and begin walking down a set of stairs. She followed after him. He was heading for where they kept their food, if she could get a look at what they had it'd be helpful information. The man took a right at the bottom and so did she. She heard a door open and close and peeked around the corner. She guessed he needed to use the can or something because he went into a staff locker room. Maybe they were using the drain in the shower to go number one. Maybe they were keeping food or valuables in there, it'd have at least semi-secure storage, whatever they were using it for she couldn't follow him in or she'd be seen so she turned and decided to poke around some more. Back the other way was a short set of stairs leading to what looked like a few more lockers and three more doors. Emily gingerly turned the handle on the first one she came too. Inside was almost pitch black. There was a candle on a shelf nearby though which illuminated the room enough that she could make out the shelves and shelves of food and beverages they'd stockpiled. In the centre of the large storage room was a pile of boxes, likely holding even more. They could stay fed for a while on all of this, the way they were rationing it though seemed like they expected to have to survive of this even longer though. Curiosity got the better of her and she walked in a little further to look at what else they might have inside. Her foot caught on something and she looked don to see somebody's legs sticking out from the wall. A surge of panic gripped her again as she suspected she'd just woken up the guard. He didn't wake though. Because he was dead. He was propped up against the wall between two shelves. It was the middle aged guard she'd seen out the front when they arrived and when Antonio had gone to speak with them, Mitch. His throat had been cut. Emily made for the door but froze in place as she saw a soft light shining beneath the door. She bolted as quickly and quietly as she could across the room and hid behind the stack of boxes. The door opened and the man she'd followed before entered. "Tomato paste. Tomato paste..." he murmured to himself as he scanned the shelf. He noticed Mitch's legs sticking out but didn't react. "Hey Mitch, grub's almost on." he informed him. When the man didn't respond he gave his foot a little tap. "Mitch." he said a little louder. When Mitch didn't wake up he came around to inspect him. The candle he was holding dropped to the floor as he gasped in horror at the discovery. "Help! Guards! Mitch's been fucking murdered!" the man shouted as he threw the door open and ran to find help. Emily got up to make her own exit when she heard movement behind her. She turned just in time to see the butt of a gun out of the corner of her eye before it connected with her head sending her sprawling in a clatter of cans as she knocked over a box on her way down. For a brief moment her vision went completely black and the room spun. Through the fog in her head she made out the silhouettes of two men carrying bags as they ran for the door. She attempted to get up her balance was compromised and she staggered. After a few seconds she unevely got to her feet and began trotting after them. She heard a door open and shut to her right and followed the sound. At the end of the hallway was a set of double doors with an exit sign above. She began making her way toward them when the familiar sound of a pump shotgun came from behind her and she was bathed in light. "Hold it right there, sister!" Hunter ordered her, shotgun in hand with a flashlight pointed at her. "They're getting away." she informed him holding her hands up. She could feel a trickle of blood running down the side of her face, and closed her eye before it got in. Hunter looked at the double doors and then back at her uncertainly. He looked behind him briefly and considered his next move frustratedly. Having no back up yet he came to the decision to wait. "Yeah well, you're not." he informed her. Emily sighed and looked back at the doors. A few moments later there were numerous footfalls as backup arrived. One of them entered the store room and the others gathered with Hunter keeping several guns pointed at her. "He's dead. Throat's been cut." the man informed the others. "Disarm her, lock her up. You come with me." Hunter instructed them taking one with him out the double doors. ... "No, I have to say I've been the business a while but the Lion is the one I'm most proud of." Saxon said in between mouthfuls. The sound of urgent shouting broke up the one-sided conversation taking place. Saxon craned his neck to see what was happening as guards rushed about the lobby. Byron came running in to interupt them. "Sir, it's Mitch. He's been murdered. They found one of her group at the scene, the younger one, the brunette." he informed him. Saxon remained silent, shock evident in his face. After a moment he placed his knife and fork down. "The girl?" he asked. "We've captured her. Hunter and Alan went off to search the premises for anyone else." Byron reported. Saxon inhaled and sighed, a mix of anger and concern. "Put Annie with her for the time being, have two guards posted outside the room at all times, and help me downstairs, I need to see for myself." he instructed him. |

Annie was stunned by the urgent shouting, and by Byron’s sudden intrusion. She was even more stunned at the mention of ‘murder’ followed by ‘brunette.’ Emily?! Annie stood up. A minute ago, she was patiently listening to Saxon talk about the casino business – a little bored, but mostly grateful to have something to talk about besides the living dead. History should have taught her something like this was due to come up any minute, but somehow she had been foolish enough to let her guard down. She blinked rapidly as she listened to Saxon and Byron’s exchange, which ended with Saxon deciding to imprison her, basically. Cold ran down her spine at the thought. It had only been a day since she was last taken prisoner, and she had been reliving it a little every time she closed her eyes for more than a few seconds. “Wait!” she insisted. “Just a second! Whatever you’re thinking Emily did, she didn’t – and you can’t just lock us up!” |

"Wait." The young girl pushed herself up to her feet. She didn't want to eat flowers. Who would want to eat flowers? Maybe an animal got caught in the trap and they just hadn't heard it. She convinced herself that that was what must have happened. But luck would not be so kind. The flimsy trap still lay there, dormant and undisturbed by any small animals. As if on cue, her stomach rumbled loudly. "Fine." She pouted after arriving back at the fire. "Let's eat the stupid flowers." * * * * * "Yeah..." Willow managed a rueful smile as Brandon rested on her shoulder. "Me too." If it hadn't been for her chance meeting with Glenda, who knew what would have happened to her? Brandon was right when he said what happened before didn't matter. Maybe it was better that way. Learning all that she did, even if indirectly, about Jen just felt like reopening an old wound and rubbing salt in it. It was not a good feeling. |

"Did you know she was here?" Saxon asked, but before she could answered he waved the the question off. "One of my people has been killed and one of your peope has been caught intruding at the scene. You have no idea how much I wish it wasn't the case, but I don't have any choice in the matter until we know what happened. I'm sorry, Annie." Saxon assured her before wheeling himself away. Two of the guards arrived and Byron passed on King's instructions to them. They were firm but otherwise respectful as they ushered Annie away. They lead her behind the reception area where a small crowd had gathered demanding explainations about what was happening. Byron placated them and Annie was taken through an office area and into a cramped server room Where Emily already sat. "Hey." she greeted her in a rueful tone. The guards closed the door behind them and left the two in darkness. Emily retrieved her zippo and lit it before placing it upright on the floor. |

“I – no, I didn’t know, but there has to be an explanation!” Annie said. She wanted to continue her protest, but Saxon uttered his apology and left before she could, leaving her with Byron and two new men she didn’t know the names of. No, no, no. If this exact scenario had happened before Salt Lake City, she knew for a fact she’d be reading differently. But there were too many parallels. Friendliness turning sour after an act of violence. Her being imprisoned. It was amazing how quickly her good feelings from the meal eroded into resentment. She knew she couldn’t do anything in the presence of the two guards, so she remained silently resentful as they escorted her through an office area and into a dark room. Her heart-rate quickened and her breath shortened when the door closed. Suddenly it was like she was there again, in the New Dawn’s train car. Emily illuminated the room and gave her a greeting, but that only did so much to calm her. “No, no, no,” she started narrating her thoughts out loud. “No! Emily – what happened?” * * * Eli took a bite from the stem. He chewed on it more than he had to before forcing himself to swallow it down. “Bitter,” he said simply, in review. “Dios, that is bitter.” |

"I was having a look around downstairs checking their supplies. They weren't lying, they've scavenged most if not all the supplies in town by the looks of things. Their guy was already dead when I got there. I went to leave and somebody clocked me from behind. Didn't see their faces but there were two of them and they had bags stuffed with supplies." Emily explained. |

"Brandon asked me to get whatever information I could about this place. I figured I'd get a look at their supply situation. I would have been in and out just fine if I hadn't gotten hit. I hope they find those guys or this could be bad." Emily said wiping some blood off her face. |

“Okay,” Annie said, and then took a moment to breathe in and out as she absorbed that information. She didn’t know what to make of Brandon sending Emily on a covert mission like that, or the fact that he neglected to inform her about it. She didn’t have room in her mind to dwell on it, either. “So you’ve obviously been injured, and I’m assuming they didn’t find any stolen supplies on you,” she reasoned out loud. “That speaks to the truth of your story. That’s good. That should be good. If these people are as rational as they make themselves out to be…” She trailed off. That was a big if, she knew. Her dinner with Saxon made her want to believe – but here she was again, trapped in the dark, at the mercy of virtual strangers. The mental scars from the last time that happened were still so fresh. It might not even be accurate to call them scars. They were more like fresh, open, wounds. She wanted to scream. Instead, she tried to think. She needed some help with that right about now. “Until Brandon finds out that they’ve detained us like this,” she said. “When happens then?” |
