Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.

“I dunno, maybe Willow’s the one sounds like me,” Eli shrugged. He spared another glance, saw that she had only guzzled down a small amount. “Water’s the one thing we got to spare,” he prompted her, raising the bottle again. “Drink up. Seriously.” * * * After catching up to Brandon, and seeing what he saw, Annie adopted her usual frown – the one she had been wearing far too often these past couple days, weeks, and months. She quickly looked away from the ghastly sight and scanned their surroundings, just like Brandon and Antonio were doing. “I mean, it could be,” she said, in response to the priest. “But probably not. We’re probably not seeing the driver. But, I mean, where could they have gone?” She kept looking around. |

Brandon joined Antonio is peering inside. It was hard to see. The windows were all coated in a thick layer of dust and the blood spray completely covered one of them. There was something in the backseat though, that much was obvious. Brandon noticed however that the dust on the handle of one of the rear doors wasn't as thick. Somebody had opened it. Maybe the kid. He pulled his weapon up again and readied himself on the door. With his foot he moved the dead boy to the side, it felt callous to do so, but really it was just another dead body. He reached for the handle with his left hand and with one quick movement flung it open and pointed his weapon inside, and then froze at the sight that greeted him. "It's not a trap." he informed the others as he holstered the Supergrade again. He leaned inside and emerged again with a piece of paper in hand. In the squiggly hand-writing of a child and the same thick black marker as the sign it read: Hello. This is Melanie. Please tell her that her brother loved her, and their mom and dad did too. Stephen. Brandon dropped the note and the wind carried it away from him. With his right hand he drew a knife he filched off one of the brothers and used his left to steady himself. Like removing a band-aid, he leaned inside and quickly emerged again with a bloodied knife. He began wiping clean with a pink bib. He kept wiping it and wiping it, and wiping it, staring straight ahead. "Let's go. This was a waste of time. Emmett needs medicine." he said as he began limping back to the cars. |

Antonio closed his eyes exhaled softly; "Agreed." He quickly fell in line behind Brandon. He didn't want to be here anymore. * * * * * For the first time since they started talking, Kelsey spared a glance in Eli's direction. "Three bottles isn't really a lot of water." She told him. "I'm fine." |

“We’ll find more,” Eli insisted. “How useful you gonna be against Lowell if you’re dizzy by the time we find him? Look at me, I’m here, driving, I’m doin’ you a huge favour – least you can do for me in return is take care of yourself, right? Okay?” He held the bottle right in front of her for her to take. * * * Annie looked at the scene Brandon left behind, and her frown didn’t go away. It was always hard to see the aftermath of this kind of story, but even harder when there were kids involved. To keep herself sane, she tried not to picture Connor in their place. It was a struggle. She was quiet as she followed the others back to the cars. |

As he walked Brandon couldn't help but dwell on the two children behind them. He couldn't say what happened but he was getting a vague image of absolute desperation. He could see a boy on tired legs carrying a baby girl. Could see him running out of time. Could imagine the realization that he was going to die, his young life already over. He could see him putting his sister in that car as his body starting to fail him, and then his final acts of devotion to call for help in the slim hope that somebody would chance by and to take his own life and protect his sister from himself. Brandon understood that. It was love. And fear. "I was afraid of him." Brandon said as the realization hit him. He stopped in his tracks. "I was afraid of Gregory." |

Annie stopped behind Brandon again. She wasn’t immediately sure how to respond to what he said, and didn’t know what had brought it on. Antonio had filled her in on what happened during the rescue, though. He told her Brandon had started the gunfight that claimed Andy’s life. Annie couldn’t help but feel disappointed when she heard that, but she didn’t yet know how to challenge him on it, and she didn’t have the room in her mind to even think about it very much. She had only gotten as far as considering that Gregory wasn’t going to surrender them willingly, so maybe he had no choice but to kill him. But then again, Antonio said Brandon got them out of the Salt Lake City by making a deal, and there had been talk of making another one before Brandon opened fire. It was hard to sort through. Her mind was too preoccupied to do it now. “I think we all were,” she said, sounding tired. |

Kelsey reluctantly accepted the bottle from Eli for the second time and took a few extra sips from it. The water parched what remained of her thirst this time. "You don't know that we'll find more water." * * * * * "What did you guys find?" The pallid Willow asked from the backseat of the convertible. It was pretty clear they had found something disturbing from the dour mood everyone came back in and the downcast looks on their faces. But right now, it was better for her than thinking about Nolan and Andy's deaths, about Kelsey and Eli's disappearance, about the crazed bastards that might be looking for them right now, about the debilitating withdrawal symptoms that kept her from doing anything, and about the distance Brandon was putting between them. Frankly, she had a lot on her mind that she didn't want on her mind. Anything new was a welcome relief from that. Even if it was something grotesque. Willow wasn't sure if she should consider that way of thinking as a good or bad thing. "Children." Antonio simply said as he approached. "One about Kelsey's age and the other a toddler. Brandon took care of them." Willow nodded her head solemnly and frowned; "Any supplies? Anything we can use?" Antonio looked down at her with a stunned expression, but Willow didn't pay it very much heed. "No." He finally answered her. |

“Yeah, well – we’ll see,” Eli said. He looked back to the road, finally satisfied. He waited for the sleeping pills to take effect. |

Brandon sat down with an odd expression. He kept thinking about the boy. About what could drive him to take his own life. The fear he must have felt, for himself and for his sister. The latter was stronger. Brandon knew that kind of fear. When Cory had him it was that kind of fear that kept him quiet. He was more afraid of what could happen to the people he loved than what would happen to him. So why did he endanger them by firing on Gregory? He couldn't recall if there was any thought process at the time. All he could remember was the intense hate he had for him. Gregory became the face of everything they'd gone through in the last twenty four hours, even more than Leonora. All of it started with him after all. It was like he was being faced with a monster, his instinct was to kill it. He let those people make him so scared he jeopardized everything. It must have been what drove the man who chased them when he had Leonora even though they knew he could hurt her for it. Fear can make you do anything, good or bad. The trick was to harness it like he did in Green River. I'll keep them safe, Andy. I promise. he thought as the convoy got underway again. He drifted off. ... "Brandon." Emily said. Brandon woke with a start. The convoy was stopped. "We're here." she said. "Elko?" he asked as he rubbed his eyes. "No. Twin Falls. You said first chance we got we'd hit a pharmacy. This place looks like a good bet." Emily explained. "How long was I out." he asked. "Not long at all." she answered. Brandon looked out ahead. It was impossible to get an idea of how big the place was with alk the flat terrain, bht judging by the number of rotters agead of them in what looked to be a commercial dustrict it was clear this place had a lot of people. To their left he could also see train tracks. That made him think of the depot. If they had such an elaborate set up in Salt Lake City, so far from their actual settlement, it wasn't a stretch to imagine they could also have operations here. Did they really want to make their stop there? It was Emmett though, so was inclined not to wait until the next town. Brandon got out of the car again and made his way to the sedan. He leaned in and picked up the radio that paired with the one in the Kellys car and pressed the button down. "Looks like a big town. Lots of rotters, maybe more brothers. A good chance I'd say actually. Search here or go around?" he asked everyone in general. |

Annie leaned in between the two front seats to join the conversation. Behind her, Emmett was unconscious – but both his breathing and heart rate had improved some, so she had any reason to be at least a tiny bit hopeful. “I don’t like the sound of a ‘A good chance,’” she admitted. “‘Lots of rotters’ isn’t a compelling prospect either. So I don’t know.” “We can handle rotters,” Connor interrupted, sounding sure. Annie adopted an even expression. She was unsure of what to make of her son’s confidence, so she simply moved on to more practical. “More medicine is always nice, but I’ve done what I can for Emmett,” she said. “What he probably needs is a transfusion, but the complications could be…” She trailed off, her even expression turning to a contemplative frown. “I think the safest thing we can do now for him is wait and see,” she said. “He needs rest, so the sooner we get to Elko the better. What I’m more concerned about is food and water – how much were you able to recover from the hotel?” |

"We left too fast to get much more than our weapons. We've got water, but that's about it, and not much of that either." Brandon admitted. Was there something wrong with them that they took weapons above food and water? "We've got enough to get to Elko but I'd feel a lot better about crossing into Nevada if we had more water to spare. I think we should take every opportunity for scavenging we get. Fast scavenging, of course." Brandon suggested. Given what happened earlier he wasn't exactly comfortable telling anybody what they should be doing. |

Annie contemplated that for a moment, then nodded her head. “Okay,” she agreed. “Fast scavenging. We can do that.” Connor was out the passenger’s side door in a blink. “I’m helping,” he declared. “Honey…” Annie said with a frown. Connor turned around and leaned back into the car. He looked back at her with a very familiar frown – Annie could see a little of herself in it, and a lot of Chase. She sighed. “Be careful,” she relented. “And listen to Brandon. At all times.” “I will,” he promised, giving her a serious nod. Annie’s gaze returned to Brandon. She didn’t feel the need to warn him to take care of her son. She was confident he would – he may have made a very questionable decision back at the train, but she still believed in that, at least. “I don’t think Hank’s ready to leave his family just yet,” she said – or talk to you, she wanted to add, but didn’t. “And I’ll check in on Willow while you’re gone.” |

"I'll help too." Antonio suggested before Brandon could leave. Truthfully, he wanted something bigger to focus on right now over his inner turmoil. Scavenging in the town was better than twiddling his thumbs here and waiting. They didn't need him around to babysit; everyone in this group was a capable survivor and would be fine without him. Hank's group and even Willow, despite her pitiful state, could keep the peace while he was gone. "I got out of there luckier than most of you." He tapped his swollen cheek lightly. "I'm still in good shape." |

"Okay. We'll take the lead car, find somewhere promising and hit it. In and out in a couple minutes tops. You guys know what we're looking for. Leave the big guns here we won't need them so they're unecessary weight, take a side arm at most. Connor you take the ditch blade and be mindful of where everyone else is when you swing it." Brandon instructed as he placed his carbine in the trunk and gestured for Connor to do thr same. "Why are you doing this?" Emily asked him quietly. "Going to look for some food and water. I don't want us..." he began. "No why are you doing this? You're completely fucked up right now. You look like you could just about keel over."she reprimanded him. "I'll rest when we get to Elko. Move the cars somewhere less conspicuous, and the others safe for me please." he said quietly but gestured in Willow's direction specifically with his head. His put a reassuring hand on her shoulder and gave her a peck on the cheek. He shared no such warmth with Willow before he got in the passenger seat, and Emily puzzled at that. The convertible took off into the town proper and left the others behind. "Okay. Let's find somewhere to lay low, folks." Emily said as she opened the driver's door of the sedan. ... There were a lot of rotters in town. Fortunately there were a lit of streets to lose them in too. The car cruised around firva couple minutes, mostly only seeing auto shops or argricultural retailers. One thing Idaho had in spades was farms. Pity all that produce was going to waste now. Once they delivered the cure Brandon imagined places like this would be important. Lots of good land oug here and plenty of space. People might actually give a shit about Idaho. Crazy. For a little while Brandon had some relative alone time with Connor. He couldn't imagine how he was processing everything that was happening. To occupy his own busy head as well as Connor's he decidex he could use some conversation. "What was your dad like? I get your mom now, for the most part, I think. I'm curious about where the other half of you comes from. If you feel like talking about him." he asked. |

“I guess I don’t mind,” Connor answered. He adopted an even expression as he tried to sort through his complicated feelings. He realized it had been a while since he had thought about his dad. It felt like he had been gone such a long time now, even though he only actually died a couple weeks ago. “He was funny,” he said, finally. “Before he fell asleep, I mean. And he was, like, cool – but I mean, like, chill cool. He never really got angry. Mom used to say he was irresponsible. Not to me, but I heard her say it. I think he cheated on her.” * * * Emily had taken Antonio’s seat behind the wheel of the sedan, and the sickly Willow had taken Connor’s seat beside her. As Emily kept an eye out for a a ‘place to lay low’ as she put it, Annie leaned forward and got Willow’s attention with a tap on her shoulder. “Here,” she said, with a reticent frown. “From my bag.” She presented her with a pill – one of the Oxy’s she had become so reliant on. Annie didn’t feel great about giving it to her, but she didn’t want to let the later, more intense symptoms of withdrawal kick in. She had her hands full with Emmett as it was. |
