"He saved my life. Back at the depot Emily and I were into it with a handful of Leonora's guys. I noticed two of them flanking us but I was fumbling around trying to reload. They would have killed me and maybe Emily too. But Andy came back for us just at the right moment. He saved us. Now he's dead becaue I started a fight we could have easily avoided." Brandon said, still looking forward. He turned to look at Willow but couldn't manage a smile, even for her. His face gave away no emotion at all. Just the numbness that had set in and was currently protecting him from his overwhelming sense of guilt. He was a hypocrite and a failure. "That's not gonna get any better." |

Eli glanced back at Kelsey – saw the same tiredness on her face that he could hear in her voice. That just wouldn’t do. Kelsey was too young and inexperienced to be sleep-deprived and effective. He made a mental note that he couldn’t let that continue. At the moment, however, they had a store to clear, so he concentrated on that. He tapped on the window of the door, then put his ear to it, listening for the kind of sounds he knew to be worried about. It wasn’t loud, but he was sure he could hear groaning. “At least one bogey,” he reported to Kelsey, then extended his hand. “Give me the knife.” She had stolen it from him back at the house in Eagle Mountain, when she had stolen his keys. It was about time he got it back. |

"You're too hard on yourself." Willow said to Brandon. She spared a glance over her shoulder. Their group was a slot smaller than it was the last time she had been here. Eli, Kelsey, Nolan, Noah, Alma, and Lowell were all missing. The first three were a hell of a lot more important than the latter three, but she had a hard time imagining anybody leaving people back there with those... weirdos. "Where's everyone else?" She tentatively asked anyone who could hear her. * * * * * Kelsey didn't argue the point with Eli. Not this time. She had already proven herself sadly inept when it came to tackling these things in close range. And her getting bitten or killed before finding Lowell would be a waste of everything. She wordlessly passed the knife to Eli and waited for him to make the first move in. |

Eli accepted the knife, rolled it around his palm so he had a reverse grip, and then slowly opened the door. He kept it ready in case anything jumped out at him, but nothing did. He got the door all the way open and gave the daylight a second to flood in. Once it had, he spotted the source of the noise – a rotund rotter near the back of the store. It spotted him at the same time, and immediately started waddling his way. Eli had about a dozen seconds before it would reach him. He used the free time to get in position, and then the free time after that study his enemy. The whole lower half of its face was smeared reddish-brown. Its hands were the same color – it was almost like it had dumped them in a bucket of paint. “Looks like someone’s been stuffing his face,” Eli muttered, as he drove the knife through its eye. With his other hand, he caught the rotter before it fell. He held it up long enough to pull the knife out, and then bent over to wipe it clean on the rotter’s jeans. He still heard groaning, so he raised a palm behind him to indicate Kelsey should stay back. He slowly approached the counter, where he thought he heard it coming from. He looked over it at the body of another rotter – what was left of it, at least. Most of its stomach was missing, as was a big chunk of its thigh. It didn’t have enough of itself left to even roll over. The guy this used to be must have taken a long time to turn, Eli figured. That or the rotter that killed it is a fast eater. Eli glanced back at the rotter he just killed. “I found your meal,” he said. He climbed over the counter, landed on the other side, and stopped the rotter’s gurgling. There was no more noise after that. “All clear,” he called out. “Now come on, help me look. Road map, remember.” He started looking around himself, for that and for food. On the latter count, he looked to be out of luck. This place had been ransacked like so many others they had passed through. |

"Nolan is dead. Lowell shot him. Kelsey went after Lowell and Eli went after her. He'll bring her back. I know it. We're going to meet up with them in Nevada." Brandon explained. Since this started they barely had time to breath, let alone mourn their dead. They still didn't. The brothers would have people coming to see what was holding the train up, they could already be on the way. They needed to put as many miles between them as possible before that happened. Once they were settled somewhere they could finally deal with everything. With a heavy sigh Brandon back to his feet. The act took more out of him now than ever. He hadn't even kissed Willow, or even held her. It felt wrong to be allowed to do that, like it wasn't fair he should be happy aftrr what he'd done to the Kellys. He made his way over to the Kellys feeling like an intruder and worse. "We need to move on soon. They'll have people looking for their missing train." he said without meeting any of their eyes. He left it at that and moved away as quickly as lossible, leaving them to grieve in peace for however long they could afford. He made his way to Annie next whp was attending to Emmett. "How's he looking? Will we be able to move out soon?" he asked. |

Annie turned to Brandon as she approached. She was in the back of the sedan with him, and had lowered the rear seats as far as they could go to create more room. In front of her, Emmett was barely conscious, his skin was moist with sweat, and his breathing was shallow. She also didn’t like the look of his lips or fingernails – they had turned a pale shade of blue. “I think he might have gone into shock,” Annie answered. She didn’t bother sugar-coating it for Brandon. He needed to know the facts. “But he’s alive,” she added. “And I’m going to do everything I can to keep it that way. I can treat him from here, so we can leave any time.” Tending to Emmett on the move wasn’t ideal, but Annie had overheard what Brandon said about the cultists likely sending more people to look for the train. She knew he was right about that. According to what Willow overheard, Gregory had been camped here while waiting for reinforcements. |

Nolan is dead? Willow exhaled sharply and closed her eyes. She should have known not to be so optimistic as to think that everyone would get out of there alive. And with Andy already dead and Emmett not looking at all great, they had paid a pretty steep price today. If she had any energy left, she might have found it in her to cry and mourn their losses as she had for Jen or Glenda or Randall or Julie. "Let's put this hell behind us." Antonio added somberly. Willow couldn't have agreed more. * * * * * For once, Kelsey agreed with Eli. She was a little hungry too, and having a map to visualize their route would make finding Lowell a lot easier. The inside of the convenience store slash gas station was about as lovely and well kept as every other one they had looted and investigated during their cross country trip. Apart from the two freshly re-killed corpses, there were plenty of magazines, paper, and broken glass strewn along the ground. It seemed like every other step that Kelsey made crunched underfoot. It was mostly trash, but she made sure to keep her eyes on the ground as well as the shelves for the maps. She immediately made her way toward the mostly empty magazine rack. There was only one map left on it that she was able to find, but after unfolding it, it proved itself to just be a map of the southern United States. Everything from eastern Texas to Florida. Which was extremely unhelpful. But it did prove that they had carried maps at some point. "Nothing." She informed Eli. "Maybe they have more maps behind the counter or something?" |

Emmett was worse. He wasn't the doctor there but he didn't need to be to see that. He couldn't lose that man too, not after all this. They needed to get him settled somewhere as soon as possible. They also needed more medical supplies, antibiotics, bandages, painkillers, the works. "We'll give them a few more minutes and then head out. We'll find a pharmacy first town we hit." he said in a business like tone. He dreaded the thought of actually approaching the Kellys to get them moving. He wished he could just leave them to their grief. He wished there was time to bury Andy. They didn't get to giveNolan a proper send off either. "Stay with us, man. We need you." Brandon said to Emmett, though he knew he probably couldn't hear. "Connor, Emily. Let's scavenge their ammo and check out the train for supplies before we head out." Brandon called out to them. ... Emily winced with every step Brandon took on his bad leg. He looked like shit. He drew the short straw, so to speak, when it came to driving the night before. He was dehydrated, he had bags under and he was still pale from all the blood he lost. He looked half dead. If it weren't for Connor being right there she would have been questioning him about what the hell just happened. They were hashing out a plan, a plan he okayed, when he went postal. Irrationality, violent outbursts, sleep deprivation and now... self flagellation? These were some alarmingly familiar behaviors. They rounded up the guns they could find and stripped them of ammo. Emily made sure the dead wouldn't get back up. When they inspected the second train though what they saw made them incredibly curious and they agreed to search it. What they found in one of the carriages shocked them to say the least. "Oh what the fuck!?" Emily exclaimed. "What? Holy shit. Connor, don't come in here." he joined in once he saw for himself. "What is this?" he asked. "Somebody who really hates the bros by the look of it. Left them in pieces for their people to find. Gotta be a message." she opined. "Yeah a big 'fuck you'." Brandon observed with a hint of sick admiration. "Well they dupe people and then kidnap them. We've killed our fair share of them. It's not a stretch to imagine they've got enemies, maybe whoever did this has lost people to them." Emily mused. "Hopefully that makes them a friend. Let's go ask the driver about it." Brandon suggested. "Yeah." Emily eagerly concurred. After their sweep they made their way back to where Brandon left the injured man. The driver had koved him into the shade. They approached the two with fingers on their triggers but their weapons lowered. "What's the story with the Midnight Meat Train?" Emily asked. |

Eli had started sorting through the shelves on the store. He was searching for any form of sustenance the previous looters might have missed. He would have been happy with some mint chocolate, and he hated mint. Unfortunately, there was nothing. The untouched sections were mostly magazines and air fresheners, but he found a shelf that advertised Advil Liqui-Gels. There was no food on that either, and no advil. Some other packages were left behind though. One was called Simply Sleep – he pocketed that for later. He looked back when Kelsey reported her lack of success. She mentioned looking behind the counter, and maybe that was a good idea. But Eli remembered the grisly sight he had left back there. He thought about telling her to stay put, that he’d check it out for himself. He caught himself – what was the point? Kelsey had seen dead rotters before. She had seen a lot worse. She had seen her own brother, her last surviving family member, cut down in front of her. What did he think he was protecting her from? “Go for it,” he said, as he went back to browsing. * * * Connor followed Brandon and Emily back to the first train. He had obediently stayed outside the second, but had been disturbed by the talk he overheard. He tried not to show it, though. He tried to keep his eyes searching the horizon, like he saw Eli and Brandon doing all the time. When they re-approached the cowardly driver – Jesse, he said his name was – he followed Brandon and Emily’s suit and kept his gun ready but aimed at the ground. “Fuck, you’re still here?” Jesse complained, looking up nervously from his injured friend. “And I don’t know! The train wasn’t supposed to be there, but it was, and I guess it was a mess. I stayed away. Gregory – Brother Gregory, whatever – he said it was ghosts.” |

Jesse hung his head a little, clearly reticent, maybe a little afraid just to be talking about it. “They’re barely people,” he said. “But look, I’m just the goddamn – I mean, I’m just – I’m just the driver! Nobody tells me shit. All’s I know is they’re savages and they’re bad fucking news.” |

"Ew." Kelsey said more out of reflex than any actual disgust upon seeing for the first time the rotter Eli had killed behind the counter. It was no wonder the first rotter had been so fat if he had been eating this guy for a while. It really made her wonder what made rotters not eat each other. Or why they even needed to eat. It wasn't like they pooped or anything. Did they? Thankfully, she didn't need to spend much time pondering the specifics of rotter eating habits. Along with some of the porno magazines they kept out of sight there were a few extra maps. "Found them!" She exclaimed so Eli could hear her. |

“I know that you are the walking damned,” the injured man said. “I know my brothers are going to find you, no matter where you go, no matter where you hide. I know they’ll destroy you – they’ll grind you down to dust. I know you won’t live to see the new dawn.” Connor frowned in anger at the response. He wanted to put his gun right into the man’s mouth, like he had seen in movies and video games, but he supressed the urge. * * * “Good,” Eli said. He gave up on the rest of the store and re-joined her by the counter, where he almost found a pen on a string, probably once used for signing receipts. “You remember the route, you said. So start drawing.” |

Kelsey placed the map on the counter. It was a fairly detailed map of the western United States, so it was also pretty big. It took her a little bit to get the map adjusted. She had to sit herself on a stool they had behind the counter just so she could see the map from a good angle as well. "They were going to Mexico. Alma had family down there or something. They said there were gonna cross in Nogales..." She scanned the map looking for Nogales along the border to Mexico. She eventually found it on the southern end of Arizona. She marked it on the map with an X. And then..." She carefully tried to reconstruct the route that she overheard them talking about earlier. I-40 and I-19 were easy to find. Some of the other routes were not quite so easy, but with names of cities to look for like Burnside and Tuscon, she was able to guesstimate which of the smaller routes they had probably taken. Her biggest problem was that there was no I-55, which got her scared. But it might have been I-15 South that they had been referring to. That would take them in the right direction. "Something like this." She told Eli when she finished; the line she was drawing had finally ended near Salt Lake City. |
