"I found out you were hiding the cure. Emmett followed you last night. We have the cure." Brandon explained.

Eli had no subtlety for all his guile, Brandon didn't think kind words were going to reach him at the moment. They were there to deliver an ultimatum: Stop acting like a psycho or get left behind. Eli would either remember they were his friends and they wanted him, or more likely he'd go with his first impulse which would probably be outrage. This was all on him.

Eli blinked at the sight of the canister, and was hit by a wave of emotions – all of them negative.

“You…” he said, struggling for the words.

Betrayal, he thought. That’s what this is.

“You stole from me?!”

He directed the outrage at everyone in the room, but then he narrowed in on Emmett. The big guy was hanging his head, like Brandon was a second ago. Clearly uncomfortable. Maybe even ashamed – like he should damn well be.

You stole from me!?” he said, changing the emphasis. “After… after everything…”

He pumped his fists at the air, his anger rising.

“Your ‘trump card,’” Eli spit out the words, turning now to Antonio. “So this is a game to you?! Well guess what – you’re gonna lose. Because you don’t have what it takes to win.”

He unclenched his fist long enough to point at the canister in the priest’s hand. He slowly rose again to his feet.

“I’ll give you one chance,” he said. “Give that back to me now.

* * *

Connor beamed a little at the compliment. Brandon and Emmett were badasses.

“Thanks,” he said. “But you’re pretty cool, too, and brave. If one of us was in danger, you’d probably do the same thing, right?”

Brandon suppressed an urge to lash out at Eli's accusation. Theft implied ownership. The gall of attempting to shame Emmett of all people was especially hard to stomach. Emmett who spared him when he had every right not to, who lost his brother to him, who had been a silent pritector to them. Brandon could have punched Eli in the throat over that alone. All he did however was position himself between Eli and Antonio. And the cure.

"You should calm down." he said simply.

His arms stayed at his side but he kept himself ready to react should Eli turn violent. His heart began beating faster at the prospect. He was confident even compromised like he was that he could put up a decent fight, and with Antonio, Emily and Emmett nearby there wasn't a lot of harm Eli could do. More than that though, he didn't want to fight his friend.

Antonio furled his brow at Eli's words. He made no motion of giving the cure back. Instead, he slipped it back into his back and zipped it closed. He would have rather Brandon not mentioned Emmett as the one that had retrieved the cure though. It only gave him a target to focus his anger on.

"Stole from you?" He asked. "I didn't know the cure was yours. I thought it was everyone's burden."

“You’re wrong,” Eli said.

He stared angrily at the bag that Antonio just hid the cure in. He wanted to reach out and snatch it. He probably could have, if it was just Antonio in here. Now, he was vastly outnumbered. Outnumbered by what he thought were his own people. What he thought were his friends.

“I found it, I fought for it, I got it back when it was stolen,” he said. “I’m the only one that can get it where it needs to be.”

"So you've killed every rotter, scavenged all the supplies and fought every fight singlehandedly?" Brandon asked him, resisting the urge to scoff loudly.

Everyone had had a hand in getting the cure this far, he thought because he was the one holding it that it was somehow his? Brandon didn't know how far this delusion went back. Eli didn't even want this. His original plan was to head north. That he could so easily dismiss everything everyone else had done to get them to this point was infuriating, and it was a struggle not to lose his patience.

“I found it!” Eli repeated, louder. “If it wasn’t for me, none of you would have even known it existed! That makes it mine!”

He knew Eli was troubled but he had no idea just how bad it was until now. He was being irrational to say the least.

"Actually you found it in Randall's area of operation, so there's a good chance he would have found it if you hadn't. And I was right behind you guys, so if he didn't there's a good chance I would have. But I guess it's really Emmett's now. After all he found it after you left it outside. Then he gave it to Antonio, so is it his now? Or is it still somehow yours? If so then you won't mind if I take that back that AR15 you've been using. It belonged to my dad so now it belongs to me, and you didn't find it, I lead you to it. Same with many rounds you've used, so I think I'll take what's left of your .45 ammo to make up for all of my rounds that you've used up." Brandon pointed out.

Eli looked at Brandon disbelievingly. He went so far as to summon an incredulous smile. He almost laughed.

“What are you, fuckin’ six-years-old? The world’s dumbest ethicist? Yeah, in your imaginary hypothetical world where Randall found it, or you found it, then it wouldn’t be mine. Is that what you’re seriously fishing for? For real? An' you gave me the rifle, ’mano, if you want it back it’s all yours. Accepting a gift ain’t stealing, genius. Did you never learn the difference in home school? Do me a favour – shut the fuck up, you’re embarrassing yourself.”

There he goes again.

"You're the only child here, Eli. Even without you the cure might have been found, I'd say the chances were pretty good actually. The cure wouldn't be mine because I found it and I don't want your god damn gun, my point is I don't have a right to insist it's mine and neither do you. Every scrap of food, every round of ammunition has been ours, to keep us alive and get the cure to California. The cure is not yours. It's the only hope any of us have for the future and we've all bled for it, so that makes it ours." Brandon explained.

He turned to Annie to take over before he lost is temper which was becoming more and more difficult to avoid.

Willow cringed, stopping herself from the last second at cutting in and interrupting Eli. The way he was talking to Brandon was straight up unacceptable. She knew that her baby could take the verbal abuse, but that didn't make it okay and that didn't mean that she wanted to sit there and listen to it. But she couldn't deconstruct his argument because she didn't even know where to begin. And even if she did, it probably wouldn't make a difference anyway since Eli was so self absorbed.

"Then why did you give the cure to Randall?" She asked instead.

Eli didn’t just almost laugh. He went ahead and did it.

We’ve all bled for it, that makes it ours,” he repeated mockingly. “It’s a nice line of poetry, but it’s bullshit. If you’re taking the cure from me, if that’s what you’re doin’ – then grow up and fuckin’ own it. Or at least come at me with something less retarded than ‘the cure might have been found, maybe, possibly, in an alternate universe,’ as if that’s supposed to be a fuckin’ slam-dunk. Until then – seriously, enough, it’s fuckin’ excruciating listening to this.”

He turned to Willow next, and he hesitated. Unlike Brandon, she had an actual point, and wasn’t reciting sophomoric blather. As angry as he was, he had to concede she was right. There was a time, weeks ago, when all he wanted was that canister in someone else’s hands. Randall had talked him out of that. He had convinced him that it was worth fighting for. And now…

“Randall’s dead,” he said.

Annie stepped in. She looked at Eli with pain in her eyes, but then looked away, addressing the others.

“Please, this is not…” she sighed, then narrowed in the priest in the crew. “Father, please.”

Antonio's lips curled into a frown. Brandon was arguably being even worse than Nolan was a few minutes ago. Nolan had been speaking out of passionate anger, while Brandon was acting openly condescending toward Eli. Right now he was arguing to win more than anything else.

"Brandon." Antonio commanded simply. "Maybe we should let Willow finish her thoughts."

He nodded in her direction, giving her the go ahead to continue. She smiled briefly before turning her gaze back to Eli.

"Yeah, Randall's dead." Willow conceded somberly. "Ever since it happened, we've just been... spiraling downward and coping with the loss in different ways. Bad ways -- and I'm no exception to that either. And I think... I think we can do better than... than this."

Willow threw her arms out in a motion that included everyone in the room. Then she sighed heavily and shook her head back and forth with tears welling in the corners of her eyes.

"I don't know you anymore, Eli. We're all worried. And it feels like we're losing another friend." She pleaded with him. "So maybe... can we please talk about this? That's all we want."

Eli opened his mouth to argue, but again, Willow’s argument caught him off guard. He took a moment to audibly catch his breath. As he did, a realization hit him.

“But that’s not true, is it?” he asked. “That’s not all you want.”

He pointed at Antonio, and the cure in his hands, but he kept staring at Willow.

“If that’s all you wanted, you wouldn’t have had me followed,” he said, his voice getting lower, but no less angry. “You wouldn’t have taken the cure from me. No. You want something else, don’t you?”

He shook his head. He looked around at the faces assembled. His own face adopted an expression at war between anger and heartbreak.

“That’s why you’re here? That’s what you all want?” he asked, his voice still low, but still angry. “Then say it. Say it. Say what you want!”

"I would do the same thing, yeah." Kelsey answered Connor after thinking for a few seconds. "But I don't have awesome aim like you and Willow. And I'm not really that strong either."

* * * * *

Willow grit her teeth together and looked toward the ground. She knew what she wanted to say, but the words had a hard time coming out. This was... heavier than she expected it would be. Talking about Randall and the group as a whole like this... it was opening a lot of old wounds. A lot of deaths. She had to breathe deeply and wipe the moisture out of her eyes before she could properly compose herself again.

"We want our friend back!" She told him honestly. "But we were afraid that if we didn't have something that you cared about then you wouldn't listen to us..."
