"That's suicide. They're actively monitoring us, and after what happened I think they're all out of patience for us." Brandon explained. Despite everything they'd seen and heard there fueling his paranoia about these people he had to admit that they had actually done nothing to deserve it. They let them cone into their home armedagainst their own wishes, given them somewhere to stay, arranged for supplies and transportation for them and even taken some of them on a ride along where they had a perfect oportunity to do whatever the pleased and did nothing. Brandon had to face the growing possibility that these people, while weird, we're innocent and well meaning. The only ones that had given cause for suspicion so far were his own people. |

Eli looked around the office he had been holed up in – it was small, even when it wasn’t crowded with people. Being cooped up here, at the mercy of these weirdoes was making him unbearably anxious. His leg was shaking even now. So he shook his head. “Staying here, at these people’s mercy – that’s not an option,” he said. “I’m not waiting to get out of here. Figure it out.” |

"It's not an option because we don't have options. We are at their mercy whether we like it or not. We have been since we got here really." Brandon stated plainly. They knew they wanted to leave. Now Brandon guessed they would be happy to see them go. The outcome of all this might simply end up being that they would never be welcome back whivh suited them all just fine. "They've heard our accounts so they know this is all Lowell's fault. You were defending a friend, and when you shot shot Alma you were defending yourself. All we can do is vouch for your character, and all you can do is pretend you weren't intending to kill Lowell the entire time." Brandon informed him, delivering the accusation in a perfectly dispassionate mattrr of fact way. Brandon knew it was true. Just like Emmett's brother, Wendy and her people, Cory and Darren he meant to kill Lowell as soon as he found him attacking Emily. |

Nolan was beginning to see what Antonio had been talking about the other day with him. About how Eli was getting more and more irrational. Of course, as far as Nolan had known, he was always pretty intense, but he looked out for the group in his own way. But this was starting to get a little far stretched even for him. "Come on, man. These people have made good on everything they had said so far. Honestly, I think you got off pretty easy here -- they could have done a lot worse." Nolan added onto what Brandon had said. "I don't wanna bury anymore friends because we started a fight we didn't need to." |

“You’re not…” He stood up to stop his leg from shaking. “You’re not listening,” he said. “They could open this door and kill me at any time. I’m not waiting. It’s not happening. I need my gun.” “Eli…” Annie started to say, in that judgmental tone she’d been perfecting since Chicago. “Don’t!” Eli snapped, interrupting her. “Just get the guns!” |

Willow glanced toward Antonio. In the past, the priest had always been one of Eli's more outspoken critics. He was never afraid to reprimand him and explain that there was a better way to go about things; oftentimes throwing in some God talk to round it out. Honestly, it was sometimes kind of annoying because he always sounded like he always sounded so self-righteous -- but now he merely sat there silently and watched what everyone else was saying. Besides Eli, he probably looked more nervous than anyone else. She had never seen him like that before. Guess we can't count on him to try talking Eli out of this. Before she could think of anything to say, Nolan got to his feet as well. Eli must have been getting under his skin, because he did not look very happy. "If they wanted you dead, they would have just mowed you down in the hallway and been done with it!" His voice was sharp. "We told you, we are not getting your guns. I've given you the benefit of a doubt so far, but I'm not gonna let your fucking paranoia get even more of us killed." "Nolan..." Willow tried to interrupt. "No! It's this kind of thinking that got Jen killed." He snapped back at her. "Because he doesn't know when to back the fuck off!" |

Annie put a hand on Nolan’s arm. She meant it as a gentle chastisement. This isn’t helping, she tried to convey nonverbally. Bringing Jen into this was not productive, only painful. Eli wasn’t so subtle. He turned and stared venom at Nolan. “You know as well as I do, that’s not how it is,” he said. “Cory killed Jen! And I'm not the one that put her in that position, you did! You and Brandon. You can keep tryin’ to put your guilt on me, but it’s not about to work.” Annie flinched, but she didn’t yell back at Eli. Instead, she placed herself in front of Nolan, and turned to face him. “Hey, hey – I need you to go check on Kelsey and Connor,” she said, her voice calm but pleading. “Could you do that for me?” She gestured past him towards the door. She tilted her head. Please, she mouthed, for his benefit. |

Willow tensed up -- for a second it looked like things might get worse. Nolan was starting to lose it again and she suspected it was Annie's quick save that kept Nolan from getting knocked on his ass. It felt wrong to compare Nolan to his father, but Randall never would have lost his cool that quickly. And if he had, he wouldn't have dredged up painful memories, like Jen, at the worst possible time. "Fine." Nolan begrudgingly ceded. The young man turned his back and stormed out of the office without saying another word. Willow let out the air she had unconsciously trapped in her lungs. Thank you, Annie. A part of her wanted to step outside and maybe try to cheer Nolan up a bit, but she knew that she was needed in here right now. Nolan would be fine after he cleared his head for a few minutes. Eli, on the other hand... * * * * * The Kelly's room was awkwardly quiet. Kelsey had a vague idea of what had happened earlier, but she didn't know the full details since she had been in her room still when everything went down. There were gunshots, so she grabbed the closest gun she could find and rolled under the bed, waiting until she knew it was safe before coming out again. And now Nolan had asked her to stay with Connor in the Kelly's room while he and the others went to check on Eli. She was kind of upset over not being allowed to go with them. Though with Eli being the way he was recently... she couldn't be all that upset. Besides, she wanted to ask Connor a few things anyway. "You shot a guy, didn't you?" She took a seat next to him and asked pretty abruptly. "Like, back on the freeway. What was that like?" |

Connor staring off into space when Kelsey asked her sudden question. He had to physically shake himself out of it. Then he had to consider his answer. “Um…” he murmured, as he did. He’d thought about that before. He thought he should feel something about it, but the truth was he didn’t. They were bad men. They killed Jen. They were trying to kill the rest of them. All Connor did was stop them. In the heat of the moment, it didn’t feel any different than taking down a rotter. Then their bodies disappeared, so he never had to think of them as anything different. “It was fine, I guess,” he finally said. “I mean, it was self-defence. Right?” * * * Annie let out a low sigh once Nolan was gone, then closed the door behind him. As she did, she noticed the guard by their room had stepped outside. She didn’t think he could hear their conversation through the door anyway, but now they had some definitive privacy. “I don’t know how many ways I can say this,” Eli said, once she re-joined the group. “But I ain’t waiting here to die. I’m getting out of here, whether you’re gonna help me or not.” Annie sighed. “What does that mean?” “What does it mean?” Eli repeated the question disbelievingly. “It means what you think it means. It means I’m gonna find a way.” “Eli, we’re not going to let them execute you,” Annie said. “I promise. But…” “Good!” Eli shot back. “So let’s go!” “But…” Annie insisted. “Maybe a little time to cool off is a good thing.” “A good thing?” Eli shot back again, in even more disbelief. “Yes,” Annie said. “Because right now, you’re scaring us.” Eli looked away from her, kicking the floor in frustration. “This again…” he muttered to himself. “Brandon’s right. You were going to kill Lowell back there,” Annie said. Eli spun around to look at her again. He started to scream. “He was going to…” He cut himself off by biting his lip, and punched the air out of frustration. He glanced at Emily and then back to Annie. “Doesn’t matter,” he said, clearly making an effort to get a hold of himself. “What matters is we leave this place. And this isn’t a discussion anymore.” Annie shook her head. “Eli…” “Enough with the Eli shit!” he said. “We’re done talking. As soon as I get the chance, I’m gettin’ outta here, and I’m taking the cure with me. If anybody here wants to stay behind, that’s on you.” Annie looked around at some of the faces assembled – at Brandon, at Emmett, and at Antonio in particular. She knew she wasn’t getting through to Eli by herself. And she knew that if he made a move against his captors, like he was insisting on, then he wouldn’t just be putting himself in danger. The situation had become untenable. Eli marched the couple steps back to his bench then sat down. He was looking up at all of them defiantly. His leg was shaking again. It made Annie terribly sad to see him like that. “This can’t wait,” she said, looking back to the others assembled. She hoped they knew what she meant. “We have to do this now.” |

Brandon went quiet at the mention of Jen. He did feel responsible for her and as much as he tried simple accept his error and face it without shame he couldn't. His eyes shot downward and he barely heard what anyone was saying around him. He was still present enough to hear Annie though. "You can try to escape if you want. None of us are going to stop you, but nobody is going to help you either, and you won't be taking the cure. We have it." Brandon opened the discussion by presenting the facts of the situation. |

Annie frowned a little at Brandon’s opening salvo. Maybe Eli needed to hear it, but she would have preferred if they didn’t start from a place of ‘do what you want, just don’t involve us.’ “We’re hoping you don’t try to escape, though,” she said quickly. “If you fail – or even if you succeed – it wouldn’t just be yourself you were putting at risk. If you anger these people any more than you have…” Eli wasn’t paying attention. “You don’t have the cure,” he said, shaking his head. “You may have my bag, but you don’t have the cure. Only I know where it is. Only way I could be sure it was safe. So let’s stop going ‘round in circles – and get me out of here.” |

“Uh huh,” Eli said, irritated – and confused by Brandon’s insistence. “That’s fuckin’ great. You keep doing that. In the meantime, what the fuck are you talking about?” |

"I was hoping we wouldn't have to play our trump card so soon." Antonio sighed remorsefully. Of course, he should have known they would need to. Like a child, when Eli got like this he would only listen if given some incentive. Right now, this was the only incentive that they had. He reached over into his bag which, unlike everyone else, he had brought with him. Because he expected this exact thing might happen. He pulled out the canister and held it so that Eli could see it. "We aren't lying." He informed Eli. * * * * * "They were shooting at us, it was totally fine." She informed Connor innocently. They were bad people. Bad people that had been trying to hurt them. They weren't anyone that Kelsey knew, so as far as she was concerned, it was okay if they died. She didn't even give it much of a thought. "I thought you were cool though. You were like Brandon or Emmett and just not afraid at all!" |
