The doctor smiled and handed Randall a small bundle, wrapped in cloth. Amidst the cloth, a tiny face slept. Randall couldn't help but smile as he cradled the newborn baby in his arms. So young, so delicate. So beautiful. He could already see that this little one was going to take after her father, a thought that made a smile creep to said father's lips. "I want to hold her." Elaine whispered from the hospital bed. Randall passed the child over, her weary eyes lighting up at the sight of her new baby girl. All the fatigue in her body seemed to dissipate, if only for a moment. Elaine tilted her head to the side and smiled. "After seeing her, what do you think we should name her now?" Elaine looked to Randall. "Kelsey..." Randall murmured. His vision was blurry and his head was spinning, but reality was beginning to rear its ugly head before him again. He remembered the SUV going airborne before quickly blacking out during the impact. He hung loosely, suspended upside down by his seat belt. Dazed, but mostly okay. As he regained his bearings, he saw his daughter, laying on her side and looking at him with worry in her eyes. She was bleeding from a cut on her forehead, but otherwise looked fine. "Thank god..." He unbuckled himself and clumsily readjusted himself. Behind him, he could see everyone else crawling out of the car, which reminded him; they were still being chased. He didn't know how long he had been out, but he wasn't about to let them kill his daughter, or worse, capture her. These people were animals and he was not going to let them have his daughter. He grabbed Kelsey by the arm and together they crawled out of the car. Without waiting for anyone else, he scooped his daughter into his arms and started running. Ahead of him, he could see Eli and Jeff, both of them seemed to have gotten out of the crash in fairly good shape, all things considered. Willow was not too far behind him; her eyes glazed over and her face covered in blood; it was like looking at a shell-shocked soldier running on auto-pilot, the Ruger glued to her hand as she hobbled forward. Where was Julie? Still in the car? He put Kelsey on the ground. "Follow Eli and don't look back!" He commanded her. She nodded and did exactly as she was told, too afraid to do anything else. Randall scooped up the rifle that Kelsey had been training with and ducked down to see Julie still in the car, firing away at their followers. "Julie! I'll cover you!" Randall barked at her. "RUN!" He positioned himself behind the fallen SUV and started firing off shots at their assailants. None of them were falling, but if he kept pulling the trigger, he could slow them down and buy some time to escape. This time everyone was getting away! |

“Fuck you!” One of the pursuers shouted after them over the din of the shootout. “Don’t let those assholes get away!” yelled another one of them. Eli followed Jeff out the side window. He had cut his arm a few more times on the glass as he crawled, but he still couldn’t feel it, even as he saw the blood. Before getting up, he turned around and grabbed the grip of his AR15, and pulled it out after him. When he made it on his feet, he could see Brandon firing from around the corner of the middle customs office. The truck must have been nearby. “Get to the truck!” he yelled at Jeff, shoving him along. “Go!” He turned around, jogging backwards, and squeezed the trigger a few times in the direction of their pursuers. He didn’t get anyone, and they didn’t get him – it was hard to shoot while moving. He made them slow down, though, and that was enough. Then he noticed Randall had gone back to the wreckage to recover Julie, just as Kelsey reached him. Eli kneeled down to her quickly. Instinctively, he turned around her, blocking her little body with his big one. “Keep going,” he instructed her urgently. “Get to the truck, follow Willow and Jeff. Go, go, go.” He pushed her forward, a little more forcefully than he meant to. He was never great with kids, and it was more important that she was safe than mollycoddled anyway. He turned back to the action, and ducked behind one of the many cars that had been left behind. He opened fire again, this time at one of the rifleman on the roof. He missed, but made the man run out of sight to get cover. Good enough. He turned again to the pursuers on foot. They were close enough that he could make out their expressions. They were angry. Almost as angry as he was, maybe. Almost. “I’ll fucking kill you all!” he screamed, and opened fire. He hoped to draw their attention, give Randall and Julie some room to escape. |

Julie didn't need to be told twice. She backed up out of the car and got to her feet. It was then she recognized the pain in her forearm for what it was. Broken bone. It hadn't broken the skin, but it could have done all kinds of damage internally. She held it against her chest and broke into a lopsided run for cover. "I'm clear, let's go." she shouted back to Randall. Brandon lay down covering fire for the others, ducking back behind cover as a bullet tore through the wall above his head showering him in cement particles. |

Everyone was scattered and running. Glenda shifted the truck into reverse; despite the damage to it, the thing still ran. She was beginning to understand why Mac had put so much faith in this truck. She backed it up until she was close to the frontrunners of Jeff and Kelsey, where she turned the truck sideways and brought it to a stop. She needed to move fast. She jumped out of the driver's seat, doing her best to ignore the sounds of gunfire rattling around her. Everyone else was nearby risking their lives, so now it was her turn as well. She sprinted to the back of the truck and pulled down the hatch in the back, immediately helping the frazzled Jeff and Kelsey into the bed of the truck, making sure they were hidden behind the sides of the bed. When Willow came walking up, Glenda frowned; she must not have been wearing her seat belt. She grabbed the Ruger and threw it in the back before practically pushing bloodied Willow into the bed with Jeff and Kelsey. Leaving our Brandon, who was nearby, that left Eli, Julie, and Randall, the latter two of whom were already on their way over. She grimaced and looked to the Ruger. Willow was too shell-shocked to take advantage of it; she scooped up the rifle, putting her fear of guns behind her once again to provide some cover. |

When Randall and Julie got close, Eli had to stop firing -- once again, he was out of ammo. Then an important thought hit him, and complicated the situation even more. Panting, he slung the rifle over his shoulder by the strap, then took cover. When Julie got past, he waved her on. When Randall arrived, Eli grabbed him and dragged him out of harm's way momentarily. "Where's the cure!?" he asked over the noise of the firefight. |

"Don't worry." Randall assured him wearily. As if to prove his point, he reached into his jacket for the pocket where he kept the cure. After a moment, his face went pale. "Shit!" |

Eli's face went just as pale, which was something considering his normal complexion. Then he saw the blood on Randall's right shoulder, and he went even paler. "The glove compartment, right?" he asked, his voice urgent. |

"I got it," Eli said, ignoring Julie. He didn't want to leave any room for argument. "Get to the truck! Go!" With his back still to cover, he drew his Supergrade, then reached into his belt for another magazine. As he reloaded, he looked to Randall and Julie, who didn't immediately move. He narrowed his eyes. "You have a fucking daughter!" he said, and he shoved Randall hard in the shoulder that wasn't injured. "Go!" With that, he racked the slide, then rose from cover and found a target. He aimed at the closest pursuer and squeezed the trigger. BLAM! He got him in the side of the chest, forcing him to jerk to the left and then stumble from his run. The people running alongside him looked over to see if he was dead, and Eli took the chance to book it. His legs were wobbly from the crash, but he pushed past it. He knew his life depended on moving fast, and he acted like it. He didn't look back to make sure Randall and Julie were doing as he said, but he hoped to God they were. He raised his pistol as he ran, and squeezed off a few more rounds. More ambushers appeared at the checkpoint and were running after him. The closest ones ducked behind abandoned cars to avoid his fire, and the supporting fire from the truck. He lowered his gun as he got close to the SUV, then did a baseball slide the rest of the way. The move tore up his jeans and caused him to cry out involuntarily in pain, but it got him to safety free of bullet wounds. From there, he crawled forward quickly and reached through the shattered passenger side window with his left arm. More rounds rang out around him than ever, and he felt the fallen SUV shake from the impact. He grunted as he reached in further, tried to grab the handle of the glove compartment. The tips of his fingers managed to make it, and he tried to pull it open. "No, no, no, no, no, fuck, fuck!" he rattled off the curses in despair. The glove compartment won't budge. It won't fucking budge. A shadow appeared beside him, and he had no choice but to look over. A rough-looking man with stubble and red eyes had caught up to him. He had a shotgun. BLAM! Eli fired first with his good arm, nailing the man in the thigh. He cried out and recoiled, firing the shotgun at the same time. The pellets flew high in the air, nowhere near Eli and his prone position. Eli fired again -- and missed. The man ducked behind the other end of the car. Again, Eli had no choice but to withdraw his hand and roll onto his back. It was probably already too late. He was probably already dead. He gripped the pistol with both hands and aimed it towards where the man had disappeared to. He waited just one second, then -- BLAM! The man with the stubble leaned out to take another shot, but Eli fired first. His bullet went in one side of the man's neck and out the other. He gasped for air that wouldn't come and fell forward. It was Eli's second confirmed kill. He couldn't think about it, though. He had to get up. When he reached his feet, he stayed low, glancing over the SUV. More of their pursuers had gotten perilously close. Three were only feet away, and at least 10 more were trailing them. Two of the closest were women. "No!" one of the woman cried out when she saw the dead shotgun man's crumpled body, and her voice and her eyes betrayed her shock and anger. She raised a revolver at Eli. BANG! BANG! BANG! Eli fired back first, and she ducked. So did the others. He started running in the direction he was facing. There was no alternative. It was too late to get back to the truck. He just had to make one last desperate grab for safety. Shots rang out behind him, but miraculously, none hit his fleeing form. he kept running without looking back. His legs wanted to give out but he wouldn't let them. He reached a small cluster of trees, and zig-zagged around the trunks. As he did, he saw a shot blow away a fist-full of bark. He kept going, into a parking lot. He leaped over the hood of an abandoned sports car, then ran between two vans. The gunshots had slowed down, but he could hear the sound of heavy breathing and feet falling clear enough. He forced his legs to keep working. |

For a few moments, Randall could only stand and watch Eli take off. Eli; the man that wanted nothing to do with the cure was now out there risking his life to get it back. It didn't sit right with Randall. "God dammit!" Randall grunted. "C'mon Julie, let's go before I regret this!" He sprinted towards the trust. Eli charging the SUV had drawn almost all the fire off of them, so it was a run that looked a lot scarier than it ended up being. He expected a gunshot to come from nowhere and end this journey for him, but it never ended up coming. When he reached the truck, Randall risked a glance over his shoulder and noticed Eli running off the street. Hopefully with the cure. "How is everyone?" Randall asked Glenda when they arrived, letting Julie get in the bed of the truck with everyone else. "Beaten, but they'll live." Glenda quickly retorted, jumped into the bed of the truck after Julie. "Where's Eli going?" "We'll swing around and get him!" Randall informed her, slamming the back hatch of the truck behind Glenda and rushing around to the driver's seat. "Brandon get in!" |

"God damn it!" Brandon cursed as his rifle ran dry. "Reload these! NATO rounds!" he practically ordered the others. His relief at seeing them was immense even if it didn't show. He reached into the cab toward Randall and didn't bother to ask permission before taking the FNP from him, it wasn't a good time for niceties. He popped off some rounds at Eli's pursuers but couldn't afford to do much more as they had their own attackers still to deal with. Julie didn't hesitate to jump into the tray as Eli fled, Jeff helping her up by grabbing her good arm. They really did have to go now. She did what little she could to provide cover. "Jesus Christ, Brandon!" she exclaimed looking back at Brandon. He followed her gaze to the left side of his lower abdomen. Blood had started to run down his leg now. There was a lot more than he thought there would be. The adrenaline was fading and now the pain was catching up to him. Being shot was not something you could just ignore. It hurt, it hurt a lot. "That's not good." he managed, his voice betraying his creeping concern. "We need to get him somewhere safe. He's bleeding badly." Julie called out to Randall. |

Eli made it to the other end of the parking lot before he dared to glance back. He saw some of the ambushers emerge from the cluster of trees, and that energized him, He reached another wall of trees himself, and immediately leaped behind one and thus out of firing range. He kept moving still, emerging onto an empty street, then more trees. He realized he was now in a suburban area when he hit a fence. He didn’t have much time to think, so he just acted on instinct. He threw over his assault rifle, then grabbed the top of the fence with both hands, launching himself over. He landed on the other side on some overgrown grass. He grunted, but otherwise refrained from making any noise. A fence between him and his pursuers might have been the best thing that could have happened to him. He tried to keep low as he kept moving. He could hear the people from the gate yelling stuff in the distance about not losing him. He aimed to disappoint them as he ran through the backward of the house and into another fence. And up we go, he thought, throwing the AR15, then launching himself over it again. This time, he rolled when he landed, then transitioned that roll into a run. Fear and necessity were making him pretty good at this. He reached the other side of the fence again, and took another running vault over. He landed in a crouch, finding himself in a backyard with a swimming pool. There was a tarp over the pool, and a rotter on top of the tarp. It was squirming helplessly on its back, halfway-submerged in the water. It saw Eli and thrashed its arms, but couldn’t hope to make any progress. Eli panted, and tried to do it as silently as possible. The gunfire had stopped completely, but he could still hear his pursuers giving chase. He needed a more permanent solution. He headed for the screen door of the house, and found it unlocked. He slid it open successfully and went inside before sliding it closed again. He found himself in an area beside the kitchen. He turned left to find a stairway. He ran up it, finding himself on a second floor with a hallway leading to three rooms – two bedrooms and a bathroom. He chose the bathroom, and closed the door behind him. There was a tinted window overlooking the street below. He cracked it open the tiniest bit and looked out. From the corner of his eye, he could see the intersection at the end of the road. Maybe a dozen of the attackers were gathered there, looking around, frustrated and confused. They were talking but Eli couldn’t make out what they were saying. After a moment, about six of them ran down the road they had come from, and the other six jogged up Eli’s street. Two of them split off at the first house, then another two at the second house. Eli’s house was the third. He closed the window, and then kneeled over to wheeze a bit. As his breath started returning to him, so did his anger. “They’re in for a fucking surprise,” he whispered, for no one’s benefit but his own. |

"Fuck, do what you can for him!" Randall called back as he slammed on the gas and turned the truck up the road. Glenda braced herself as the truck lurched into motion. Despite the fact they were escaping, she frowned when she saw the shape everyone was in; most everyone was battered and beaten. Almost no one escaped without any cuts, scrapes or bruises. Julie looked like she was dealing with a broken wrist; troublesome but that could be splinted when they were safe. Willow had gash on her head and a graze from a bullet wound on the left side of her waist, but neither was of any particular concern, she would be okay for time time being. Kelsey had a cut on her forehead, but it looked a lot worse than it actually was. The pressing concern was Brandon. Glenda was no nurse, but she was probably the only person here who could help him. She removed her collared shirt (she was wearing a sleeveless tank top underneath it) and wrapped it around her hand. She then applied it directly to the gunshot wound on Brandon's abdomen. The gunshot had gone straight through; she didn't know if that was a blessing or a curse in this case. She could already feel the warmth of his blood seeping through the fabric. She needed to assess how he was doing. "Stay with us, Brandon. We got you now. Once we get to safety, we'll get this closed up." Glenda assured him. "How are you feeling? Move your feet for me if you can." |

Eli held his breath as the door swung open and two men filtered in. One was older and rugged, with a gray beard and a weathered face. He wore sunglasses, and didn’t take them off as he led the way into the house. The other one Eli recognized. He was younger. Mac’s age, Eli realized, as anger swelled up in his stomach. He was the one Eli had seen in a window back at the ambush. He was still carrying a rifle he had come so close to ending Eli with. Now Eli could make out the words on his shirt – ‘Championship Vinyl,’ written over a cartoon depiction of a vinyl record. They both got closer, and Eli remained still, doing nothing to give himself away. His fingers lightly danced on the grip to his Supergrade. He was ready to end these two. “Check upstairs,” the older man said. “I’ll get the kitchen and the backyard. Yell if you see something.” “Got it,” the younger guy replied, and circled around the stairs. “Nate!” the older guy shouted. “Seriously, don’t take any chances with this asshole. He killed Rob.” The younger guy in the t-shirt – Nate, apparently – responded with a meaningful nod. Eli ducked back behind the kitchen counter when he disappeared from sight. He listened as the older guy started looking around. He also holstered his Supergrade, as silently as he could. He realized he didn’t necessarily need to end them. Not right away. There was a smarter move to make. He pulled out the police baton he had taken from Roland’s corpse way back at the lodge. It hadn’t seen any action yet, but now was the perfect time. When he heard the older guy get close enough, he whipped his hand forward, extending the baton, then stood up suddenly. The older guy probably sensed movement, but before he could turn around all the way, Eli brought down the baton on his skull with all the force he could muster – and he could muster quite a bit. There was a loud thwack, and Eli could practically hear the guy’s brain moving inside his skull. He collapsed to the floor instantly. Dead, maybe? Eli thought without remorse. He couldn’t tell through the sunglasses, so he leaned over and pressed his finger to his pulse point. Nope, just knocked out. Eli considered wining back and striking again, finishing the job. He even raised the baton. But he paused. He couldn’t bring himself to do it. Shooting that guy earlier – Rob, he know knew him as – was a matter of life and death. There was no time to think about it. Killing someone who was unconscious was something else. Eli wasn’t ready to face that. Instead, he closed the baton and slid it back into its place on his police belt. Then he dragged the man in the sunglasses by his arms into the living room. He was confident he was quiet enough that Nate couldn’t hear. Then quickly, he gathered the thickest-looking wires he could find from behind the television, and wrapped them around the unconscious man’s wrists and ankles. Eli also looted the Glock 19 the man brought with him. There wasn’t another holster on Eli’s police belt, so he just set it on a nearby counter to retrieve later. Then he patted him down, finding – of all things – some candy bars in his pocket. Eli took those too, finding room for them in one of the containers on his belt. Then he drew his Supergrade again and waited. A minute passed before Nate appeared at the top of the stairs. Eli waited behind them silently, and when Nate was at the bottom, he stepped out. He jammed the barrel of his pistol into the back of Nate’s neck. “Drop the rifle,” he said coldly. “And that’s one more warning than you savages gave my friend, so don’t think I won’t fucking annihilate you.” Nate tensed up, but dropped the rifle – a Winchester Model 70 – as Eli instructed. “Where’s Randy?” Nate asked, genuinely worried, it sounded like. “Worry about yourself,” Eli said, still ice cold. “Let’s talk outside.” Eli grabbed the kid by his neck, and forced him towards the sliding doors by the kitchen. |
