Why did Eli leave him with a radio? It didn't really make sense. Maybe they just had the things coming out their asses. Maybe he just had too much going on.

"I don't think so." He said into the radio.

* * * * *

Gunshots sprinkled the windshield of the hummer. Cracks and fractures started spreading across the glass in spots where the larger caliber guns had not simply blown through, and visibility was quickly becoming an issue. But as long as he kept his head down, he was too low for the bullets to actually hit. Though the constant hail of gunfire was annoying. They could shoot all the wanted though, they wouldn't be able to take down a hummer with small guns like that.

"Maybe we should retreat?" The last standing soldier of Cory's militia suggested from the passenger seat.

"No." Cory growled. "This is personal now."

He shifted into the next lane over and pressed on the gas. As they reached the apex of a hill, they started down another incline. Though he could barely see anymore, he could make out a bridge up ahead. The bridge gave Cory an idea.

Bridge. Shit.

Emily gripped the wheel hard. With that thing next to them it could easily shove them clear over the edge. She had to get some distance on that thing. She had an idea how she might do that but it was dangerous. Less dangerous than crossing that bridge with that thing next to them though.

"Eli I need you up here. I need you to take out their headlights when we you get a shot on them. I'm about to give you one. Everyone else buckle up." she yelled.

Eli complied with Emily’s order. He didn’t want to give himself any time to doubt it or even consider it. If she had a plan, it was better than the lack of plan that he had.

He shuffled his way to the front seat, still wielding the carbine. When he arrived in place, he gave her a serious nod.

Behind them, Annie also did as Emily asked. Eli turned and watched as she hauled the children back up in the middle seats, taking care to strap them in before finding one herself.

Once she was buckled up, Eli’s gaze snapped back to Emily.

“Okay,” he said. “Ready.”

Brandon dragged himself back over the seats with a groan as pain shot through his body from head to toe. Getting his right leg over was the worst. He notice a lack of exit wounds, that was going to be fun. He'd really fucked this all up. He nodded at Eli as he and Willow buckled in.

..

Eli gave Emily the go ahead and she pursed her lips and wrung the steering wheel in anticipation. She spared a glance at the humvee to her side and looked back at the bridge as they sped towards it. She slammed the brakes as they approached, letting the humvee speed on ahead of them. Time for the set up. She revved the engine as she waited for the humvee to turn back around and face them, and Eli could take those lights out.

What?

Cory mused silently at their attempts to keep fighting. They didn't have the firepower to keep fighting or the speed to keep running. Yet they were planning something. The question was whether they were planning to run or to fight. He considered the possibilities. Most likely he was being tricked into turning and facing them. Were they going to try to slip through as he turned?

It doesn't matter.

Cory used the full width of the street, plus a little extra, to turn the hummer around in one go. He wasn't going to give them time to think, as he came out of the U-turn he floored the accelerator. He was going to crush this van in one go.

Eli braced himself for the sudden stop, but still violently rocked in place when it came. By the time Emily revved the engine, however, he managed to recover. He aimed the carbine towards the windshield, which had already been partially destroyed over the course of the battle.

His bullseye was easy to see – in fact, it was all he could see, with the hummer heading straight at him. He aimed at the centres of the blinding lights.

BANG! BANG!

He had never prided himself on his aim. He wouldn’t even call himself a good shot, typically.

Somehow, though, he rose to the occasion. The headlights went out.

Emily began charging straight back at the humvee with her high beams blaring. She did a quick calculation in her head. There was a chance Cory would predict what was about to happen, but even if he did that only gave him a fifty-fifty chance of stopping them. So all things being equal, they had a roughly thirty-three percent chance of being turned turned into salsa.

Emily kept an eye on how much room they had either side of the humvee to maneuver. As she got up to speed and the humvee was threateningly close she cut the lights and pulled hard to the right side. The sudden darkness was blinding, Cory would be unable to see them with his own lights taken out, similarly though they couldn't see him. Everything was completely black, and she was driving by memory alone for a heartstopping instant as she maneuvered around where she estimated the humvee would be.

Willow could barely see in the darkness that suddenly fell over them. She was pulled violently to the left as Emily swung a hard right to dodge the hummer. She saw the hummer swerve to its left and in their direction.

KRAK!

The entire car thrashed from the impact; it had slammed hard into the back left corner. Willow was sure she heard something fall off the back of the van. But ultimately, Emily stayed in control and the van was still moving.

Holy shit. Willow took a deep breath. She had forgotten to breathe just now.

Behind them, the humvee continued going off road. But it didn't stop moving either. It was already turning around again to continue the chase.

* * * * *

"Get on the gun." Cory ordered the last man as he pulled the humvee back onto the road.

That was a clever trick, but it had only delayed the inevitable. Even if they gained a sizable lead on him now, the 50 cal could still tear them apart. And without light, they wouldn't even see it coming. He grinned maliciously. And then frowned deeply. The man in the passenger seat had been hit by something in the chest. He was still breathing, but he wasn't moving. And Cory sure as hell wasn't leaving someone who was about to die to drive.

Fucking useless assholes.

New plan. Cripple the van; drive away; mow them down from far away. Easy. He had hit the van, so they wouldn't be going any faster than they had before. If you want a job done right, do it yourself.

Eli clung to his seatbelt as he was jerked around again – this time by an impact on the back of the van.

He couldn’t see much now with both headlights out, but he could still hear the Humvee going, especially now that the wind wasn’t screaming into his ear.

He looked to Emily. Had she gotten what she wanted out of that?

Emily's gamble payed off. At least partially. They were still all in one piece, the humvee was behind them and they were crossing the bridge. She was hoping she could have puled that off cleanly but hadn't quite managed it. She drove on, and her heart sank as the speedometer climbed only to fall short. The damage to the back wheel had almost crippled them.

"Fuck!" she cursed.

Now they were running in the dark wounded. She prayed they could at least get over the bridge before that thing caught up.

...

Brandon undid his seatbelt and painfully climbed back over the seat. If that thing was going to smash them to pieces a seatbelt wasn't going to do shit. A big gun might do something though. He picked up the BAR and prepared for more fighting.

Willow's heart raced as the van started slowing down and the humvee continued to turn around and make another approach. She wanted to raise her rifle and fight back, but she was out of bullets. And she was frozen in fear, even if she wanted to reload her rifle right now, she couldn't. Everything they did seemed so hopeless. They had taken out everything, and now this one humvee was going to finish them off. She didn't need to see it approaching, she could hear the roar of its engine as it closed in. It came in to their left and veered into a wide right turn. The grille of the hummer smashed vigorously against the front half of the van and jolted everyone about. It T-boned them against the railing on the edge of the bridge and stopped them in their tracks. Yet even though both vehicles had stopped moving, the humvee's engine continued to boom.

The windshield and passenger windows cracked. The chassis groaned. The railing keeping their car on the bridge creaked uneasily.

Oh fuck, we're going to die! Willow's entire body shook and she covered her face with her hands. We're going to die... we're going to die! We can't get away! We can't escape! Oh God... why? WHY?

The force of the impact tossed Eli’s body against the passenger side door. He braced himself and took most of the damage in his shoulder. Blinking from the disorientation, he had to consider how much damage this must have been doing to his back. If there were still chiropractors, he might have even considered visiting one after all this, and he hated chiropractors.

It was a silly thought, he realized. If this is your last minute alive, don’t spend it thinking about chiropractors.

He fumbled for the carbine. He had dropped it when the hummer had collided with the van for the second time.

Emily only had the ominous roar of the humvee for warning before it slammed into them hard. Her head struck the side of the car and her vision went black. She collapsed on the steering wheel and the horn began blaring incessantly, its final dying sounds.

...

Brandon was sent sprawling in the back of the van. His head swam more violently than before. He could dimly hear the sounds of breaking glass as groaning metal. He was pushing then off the edge. Brandon clumsily grabbed the BAR and pull hi.self toward the rear window and slowly lifted himself up and out, falling the distance to the ground.

Cory was insane, but now he'd really lost all semblance of control. This was pure anger and vindictiveness, he was going to crush them. The humvee backed up a little and then surged forward again pushing them further toward their death. As the humvee grinded the van mercilessly Brandon dragged himself up to his knees using the BAR for support. He half walked half crawled toward the humvee.

All he could see were the faces of the people in there. His oldest friend. A woman who was one if not the best person he'd ever met. Two kids who were the only people in the who looked up to him. A man who he'd been through hell with more times than he cared to count. And the only woman he'd ever loved. As he opened the driver door of the humvee he couldn't see his enemy. He didn't want revenge or justice. He just wanted them to live. He brought up the BAR and unloaded what was left of his magazine.

Cory was so driven on crushing this car and hurdling it over the edge of the bridge that he almost did not notice the passenger door open. He had not even seen anyone approach, but his instincts kicked in. He grabbed the dying man next to him and held him against himself. At the same time, Cory shifted the humvee into reverse.

The gunfire started. The armored guard managed to absorb a few shots, but it was a high caliber weapon, just as many ultimately tore through both sides of the armor and his body. At least one of these bullets went into Cory's abdomen. The massive man roared in agony and slammed on the accelerator. Whoever was shooting into the humvee was thrown off and the gunfire ceased. But in his haze of pain, he forgot to take his foot off the accelerator and the humvee reversed straight through the railing on the opposite side of the bridge. The rear tires immediately were in empty space and the underside of the military-grade vehicle screeched against the edge of the bridge. The front tires were lifted slightly off the ground as the humvee came to an uneasy equilibrium, teetering precariously on the edge of the bridge.

Cory grimaced through the fiery pain in his abdomen, but remained as still as a statue.

This isn't over. Not yet. Cory narrowed his eyes and focused through the pain.

KA-BOOM!

The round from Willow's Ruger Gunsite hit the edge of the already teetering humvee. The force of the bullet was enough to tilt it just far enough back that the entire thing disappeared from the bridge. They were rewarded with the sound of crashing metal a second or two later. For now, at least, it was over.

Willow tossed aside her rifle and jumped out of the van.

"Brandon! Oh god, Brandon!" She knelt down beside him and grabbed his hand as she leaned over him. "Can you hear me, babe?"
