The headlights illuminated the two familiar vehicles ahead of him. To the side were four people he didn't know, that lady's friend's and husband. Standing behind them was somebody he did know. Emily had a shotgun pointed at them threateningly, clearly in case it was somebody else driving up towards them. He stopped the car and turned off the engine, blanketing the scene in darkness. With a grimace he opened the door and got to his feet.

"That you?" Emily asked loudly.

"It's me." he confirmed

He could hear her sigh from there.

"Grab their guns and put them in the trunk. It's you're lucky night, you're all free to go." she spoke to the others.

A flashlight came on and pointed in his direction.

"Jesus Christ..." Emily remarked as she saw his face.

"Is it bad?" he asked with a pained smile.

Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.
Eli grunted as he hit the wall, and flinched as smoke stung his eyes. He hated that he was in another fight so soon after almost being taken down by Cory. He wasn’t supposed to get in any fight at all. He was supposed to be gone already. He would have been gone, too, if they hadn’t taken Brandon.

Instead, he had a shotgun pointed at him again. He ducked.

BOOM!

The lady fired again, and Eli felt the wall panel above his head explode, some of it falling on top of his neck.

He darted forward and roared like an animal. With his left hand, he grabbed the barrel of the gun and pushed it out of the way. With the other, he punched his woman attacker square in the face, as hard as he could.

When Annie heard Brandon’s voice on the radio, she felt immense relief. Until then, she couldn’t help but entertain the idea that the worst had come to pass. She worried they would end up taking all this risk, only to find that Cory had already started and ended with him.

When his car approached, she held her breath – and released it only when his recognizable form appeared in Emily’s flashlight.

She caught it again when she got a good look at him. He was alive. He was ambulatory. He was talking. Otherwise…

“Mom…” Connor said.

She frowned. He was frowning too.

He had been silent since leaving the hotel. The severity of the situation had not been lost on him, and he must have realized that since he couldn’t contribute, really – and they wouldn’t let him, even if he tried – the best he could do was not distract his mom and the others by airing his complaints or fears. Seeing Brandon in that condition must have crossed a threshold for him.

“It’s okay,” Annie said insincerely. “Just… wait here.”

She got out of the car, grabbing the strap of her bag and dragging it along with her. She rushed forward to head off Brandon, deep concern etched on her features.

“Brandon, what…” she trailed off.

What happened? she wanted to ask, but it was pretty obvious, actually.

Andrea could not dodge the punch.

She saw a bright light as she was struck, which was quickly replaced by flashing lights that darted across her vision. She lost control of her body, unconsciously releasing her grip on her weapon and crumpling to the ground like a rag doll.

"Gunshots down this way!" A voice shouted from down the hall that Andrea had just come from.

Willow was terrified. It was difficult to fight back the fear and anxiety that was gripping her. And while those emotions were there, it was difficult to fully get a hold of herself. The high she was riding on earlier had not left her system; she was woozy, unsteady, and generally unreliable. Willow knew that better than anyone which is why she had been merely sitting down and waiting. Being able to do nothing was the worst. Kelsey even showed her concern by resting her little head against Willow's arm. It wasn't a huge gesture, but it did make Willow feel better, even if it was just by a little bit.

What was I thinking?

She asked herself the question over and over again in her head. Just because she thought they had an entire day to themselves tomorrow, why did she think that meant it was a good idea to go off like that? Her self control was just as poor as it had always been, it seemed.

When Brandon came driving up though, her heart skipped a beat. And when she saw him, it sank into her gut. What the hell had happened to him?

"Oh babe..." She reached forward as if to hug him, but stopped herself.

Annie was already checking him out and looking over his injuries. She could hug him later. For now... she was just thankful from the bottom of her heart that he was alive. That was all she wanted out of this.

Eli maintained his grip on the barrel of the shotgun, even as the woman he struck didn’t. When she hit the floor, he grabbed it with his other hand. He quickly found the trigger, and aimed it at the woman’s crumpled body.

He could barely see her, but he got the feeling that this was the woman Danica wanted dead. Even if she wasn’t, she was one of Cory’s men. That much was clear. She may not have been a threat now, at this moment, but she would be one again.

And if the roles were reversed?

Eli snarled and squeezed the trigger.

BOOM!

Buckshot obliterated her face.

Eli was on the move again a moment later. He would see her face again in his dreams, he knew – her short brown hair, her green eyes – but until then she was no longer his problem. Finding Brandon and getting out of Green River was his problem.

The rest of the way was clear, miraculously, and he was grateful when he emerged outside, away from the thick cloud the nail bomb had unexpectedly spit up. Eli coughed as he sucked in the fresh air.

Darren was there, in a car. So were two dead guards, their brains splattered against the car’s rims. He was pretty sure he knew who to thank for it. He would have to do that later.

Eli looked at Darren. He had more than one question, and very little time to ask them.

“Did you see a young blonde guy?!” he demanded. “He would have been tortured, would have been in bad shape! Did you see him!?”

Thankfully, the next person to emerge from the building was Eli. Darren could hardly believe it when he saw it. Not only was he alive, though a little worse for wear, but he might have actually been able to do it. He wanted to ask and confirm, but Eli spoke first. The description he gave him reminded him an awful lot of the guy they brought in earlier. Well, the young and blonde part at least.

"Just these two guys!" Darren told him and motioned to the lifeless corpses on the ground that Eli's sniper had taken care of. "Nobody else! We gotta go before more show up!"

“Fuck!”

Eli looked around wildly. He knew they needed to get out of here, he didn’t need Darren to tell him. He knew there was no time to waste, and that every second he spent looking for Brandon was one more second they were both in danger.

He couldn’t find any clues in the vicinity, not that he expected to. He focused back on Darren.

“What about your sister? Where’s she?”

Darren glanced around uncomfortably. He didn't know where his sister was. He didn't have time to worry about her right now. He had to trust that she did what he asked her to do.

"I told her to leave through the back and go hide in her room until this blew over." He told Eli flatly.

The truth was that he didn't want her being seen with them right now. Any fallout that came as a result of this, he would take the brunt of it. If she slipped out unnoticed, he hoped that she would be free of any potential consequences.

Again, Darren looked around. A few people, some of them militia, were starting to eye the car suspiciously and were making their way over to investigate.

Dumb, Eli thought.

He vaguely remembered agreeing to that – or at least, not objecting to it – but also remembered being too focused on Cory too really care about what happened to Danica or Darren after he was done. Now, though, that plan seemed silly. If Darren needed to get out town, so did she – if any Cory loyalists remained, how was it going to look to them? Her brother brought in Cory’s assassin and then disappeared, and they were supposed to give her a pass?

Really, the whole plan of succession was ill-considered. Eli had to take some of the blame for that. He pushed the siblings into it, made them commit to doing it quickly before they could put a solid plan in place.

Eli was more concerned with Brandon, however. He could get over leaving without Danica. He couldn’t get over leaving without him.

Then he noticed a bag in the passenger’s seat. His stuff, presumably. A realization hit him.

He leaned in through the window.

“Pass me my radio!” he insisted.

“Hey!” someone else barked out, sounding none-too-friendly.

KA-BANG!

Eli flinched but didn’t look away, even as he heard a body drop.

He wasn't sure what the hold up was, but Darren wasn't about to argue with the guy that not only beat him up earlier, but also presumably killed Cory. He reached over quickly handed the radio over.

KA-BANG!

After that second shot, everyone around them was now scrambling for cover. It seemed like they were hesitant to just start shooting without asking questions first, which Darren was immensely thankful for at this moment.

Eli turned the radio on and pressed down on the button. He spoke quickly and frantically. If he was right – if the others had followed Brandon here – he needed to talk with them, figure out what to do.

And he needed to do it before the militia got their act together. Jimmy couldn't keep them pinned down forever.

“This is Eli!” he said. “Is anyone there?!”

Brandon took a look at the faces around him. Everyone was here except Eli and Jimmy. A short time ago he was certain he'd never see any of them again. He was glad to see everyone but the face he looked for most intently was Nolan's. He was alive. They lied. He felt relieved beyond words but with that relief the desperate energy he had was gone and he felt suddenly very weak.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Brandon said at the others concern.

"I think it's a fractured rib. Getting... tight in the chest." Brandon informed Annie of his most pressing concern.

He turned his attention to the prisoners.

"The other lady... she's at the store near the gas station." he said between slightly labored breaths.

Eli's voice sang out from the radio. The chaos going down at the camp could be heard for miles, Brandon assumed it was Eli and Jimmy. Eli was alive at least, yet another huge relief. He was still in the thick of it by the sound of things though.

"Holy shit!" Emily exclaimed as she scrambled for the radio.

"Eli! Yes we're all here! Can you get out of there?" she responded.

So he was right – the whole group had come here chasing Brandon. They were within radio distance of the Green River camp. Eli wasn’t sure how to feel about that.

“Can’t yet,” he responded quickly. He sunk low to the ground, in case any of the militia decided to take a pot shot. “Gotta find Brandon. He’s gotta be here somewhere. Cory told me.”

Antonio removed the last of the zip ties from their former prisoners with a knife. As the binding instrument fell to the ground, the group hurriedly departed, the middle-aged man with the cowboy hat only staying behind a moment longer than the rest to hear out Brandon's explanation of where their last man was -- his wife presumably.

"They will probably be coming out hot." Antonio reminded everyone. "I don't want to stick around here any longer than we need to. Can you examine him while we drive?"

He hated to sound cold towards Brandon's pain, but the truth was that it sounded like a storm was stirring in the distance. The people they had just released knew where they were too. Once Eli was back here, he wanted to put as much distance between themselves and Green River as they could.

With a growl, Cory rose back to his feet. His Kevlar vest had stopped the rounds three rounds that had been drilled into his chest. His chest was probably bruised from the impacts and a fresh trail of blood dripped from his nose, but neither of those were not a big deal. The real wound to Cory had been to his pride.

He couldn't have gotten far.

He withdrew his M1911 from his waistband and started making his way outside through the smoke.

"ON ME!" He roared to anyone who might be in hearing distance.

Eli was taken aback by Emily’s response. He blinked in surprise.

Brandon was out? How is that… He shook his head. Doesn’t matter. Like Emily said, he needed to get out and he needed to get out now.

He climbed into the car, his mind reeling. He remembered Danica was in there. These next few hours would be crucial for her. If she stayed out of sight and waited out the aftermath of Cory’s death, she might be okay. When the smoke cleared – literally – she might be able to emerge safely and even claim a leadership role for herself.

If one of Cory’s men found her, however, while the chaos still reigned – well, that would be a different story. The thought made him narrow his eyes.

“Go!” he said anyway.

Danica was tough, she had proven that. He’d have to trust she could take care of herself.

The important thing was that Brandon was safe and alive. And that Cory was dead. That cue-ball fuck would never put another one of Eli’s friends in danger ever again. He had seen to that. And he’d be a hell of a lot more satisfied about it as soon as he had a moment to catch his breath.

“I’ll do a full examination as soon as we’re away from here,” Annie promised.

She was still awash with a conflicting mix of relief and concern. Without waiting for his consent, she put one of his arms around Brandon’s shoulder and helped him to the van.

“We’ll put you in the back,” she said. “You can lie down.”

She helped him along, then swatted at Nolan’s shoulder to get his attention.

“You and Emmett get in the truck,” she instructed. “We’ll need the space. And Connor, Kelsey, honey, move aside.”
