Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.
Eli’s mouth didn’t straighten out. Darren’s answer wasn’t what he was hoping for, or expecting. He was looking for something heartfelt, something that could make him look past the bad feeling he had in his gut. Instead he got something pragmatic.

But he did need help getting past the guards. And his sister would be back soon – if he did something to Darren, he’d have to do the same to her.

Mierda,” he cursed.

He bobbed his head and closed his eyes tight. When he opened them, he produced the handcuff keys from a pouch in his belt. He held it between his fingers, presenting it to Darren.

“A good will gesture,” he explained. “Do us both a favor, ’mano, and don’t make me regret it. You’re hermana will be back soon. When she gets here, make sure she doesn't either. I don’t want any sudden moves from either of you.”

Despite Darren’s protestations, the sister would have to be involved. There was no way around it now. Besides, Eli had an idea. Or the beginning of one, at least.

He approached Darren by the radiator and held out the key, just out of reach.

“You armed?” he asked.

He didn’t get a chance to search him thoroughly in the chaos that was his trip up here.

Clearly Darren's answer was not the one that he wanted to hear. Not that he really cared; Darren wasn't much one for sappy pleas or emotional speeches. He fancied himself fairly rational and logically minded at the end of the day.

"Got a gun at my waist. In the back." Darren informed his captor.

He had a few opportunities where he might have been able to go for it. But he decided against it each time. It wasn't as if he trusted this guy -- he had just taken him hostage and held him at gunpoint in his own room -- but any sudden or strange movements might have triggered him. And now that he knew Dani was coming by again, that just made the stakes even higher for him. But even though this guy was clearly a little unhinged, they did share a common goal right now. Darren would have frankly waited a little longer and put more thought into a plan to take out Cory, but this guy was going to expedite everything. Regardless of whether that was good or bad, there wasn't any going back on it now.

Eli finally holstered his pistol. He gave Darren the key with one hand and reached around him with the other. After quickly patting around in search of any other weapons, and finding no more, he seized the gun Darren had told him about.

He didn’t think Darren would have used it on him. But it was best not to leave that kind of thing to chance.

He took a step back, giving Darren the chance to free himself in peace.

“Your sister, what’s her name?” he asked.

* * *

“I got it,” Emmett volunteered.

The wound in his side was holding him back, making him feel frustrated and useless. But it wasn’t about to stop him from looking through a scope, so he took the initiative to get out of the car and fetch Willow’s rifle.

He perched it on the hood of the car to steady his aim, then squinted as he stared through the scope.

“House is torched,” he said, observing the flames visible through the windows, and the ones poking out the roof. “Doesn’t look like anyone is…”

He shook his head, physically cancelling what he was about to say. Now that he could see the cars approaching, he could also train his ears on their engines.

“Two cars approaching,” he said. “Red stripes.”

Darren took the key with his free hand and unlocked the handcuffs while the Hispanic guy confiscated his weapon from him. Which was fine. Darren was pretty convinced now that this guy wasn't as big a threat as he looked. If he had only wanted Darren dead, then he would be dead by now. Giving him the tools to unlock himself would be an unnecessary risk for someone in his position. After removing the cuffs, he tossed them and the key on the bed.

"Dani. Er... Danica." He corrected himself.

Dani was a pet name for him and her friends. This guy wasn't exactly a friend right now.

"And you already know I'm Darren. What's your name?"

* * * * *

Dr. Thompson wiped a trail of sweat from her forehead as she finished covered her patient's abdomen with gauze. She had stitched up a lot of the wounds that needed it and wiped a lot of the extra blood from his body. But there was little she could do about the ribs, his eye, or the concussion. That was all in God's hands now. Speaking of the concussion though, it might not be a bad idea to wake him up. The injuries were bad enough to warrant a considerable concussion, the last thing she needed was to have him lapse into a coma or something.

"You awake, lover boy?" She asked him loudly.

No immediate response. She pulled a bottle of water out of her bag and sprinkled a little on his face. It was far from professional, but she made due with what she had.

* * * * *

"Tacky as always." Jen commented quietly.

Nolan nodded his head. This was actually probably good. The fire had some of them distracted. He wasn't sure how long they would stick around though, since there wasn't much they could do to stop it. Unless they had fire trucks over at their camp, but that would seem like a gross misuse of a valuable resource like water.

"So I guess we can confirm that Eli and Jimmy did that." Nolan told everyone.

Frankly, he was outside of his league here. He knew that Eli set a fire to distract some of the guards so that he could slip into the Green River encampment and kill Cory. That meant that there were less guards back home at this very instant. But what was the right thing to do? He had all the pieces of the puzzle, but he didn't know how to put them together in a way that made sense. Or at least a way that was safe.

"Emily, you're a cop. What do you make of all this? What do you think we should do from here?"

No reason to lie. Not that he could see.

“Eli,” he said, and then moved on. “Tell me something – when Cory does his torture thing, how’s that work? Does he do it alone? An’ where does it go down?"

Another round of knocking interrupted the conversation.

"Are you done wanking off in there?"

Darren glanced at Eli. When he was pretty sure he had the go ahead, he went for the door and unlocked it. His sister stood outside, holding a small candle for light. Her brown eyes peered at him from below her short black bangs. Just looking at her face was always weird; you didn't see many half-Chinese people in Wyoming. Yet here he and his sister were. It was like looking in a mirror. If the mirror made him shorter, more feminine, and gave him boobs. Even their fashion was still the same; raggedy jeans and heavy hoodies -- though that was likely more from convenience than anything else.

"How's the arm?" He asked casually.

"Fine." She told him. "Who is that? Please tell me you were masturbating alone earlier."

Her eyes fell on Eli as she stepped inside. She clearly was not sure what to make of the newcomer. Especially one that gave off the sort of intensity that he did.

"This is Eli." Darren told her. "He's a, uhh... friend of mine."

"And is he Cory's friend too?" She shot Eli a sideways glance before looking back up at her brother.

Darren sighed and closed the door behind Danica. She took a seat at the chair by the long unused television set; her eyes briefly caught sight of the handcuffs on the bed. A look of surprise and disgust crossed her face and she immediately pretended not to see them. Darren wasn't even going to bother trying to explain that right now. In fact, it was probably easier if he didn't.

"No, not exactly." Darren told her cautiously. "In fact, kind of the opposite. You see..."

"Oh, good." Dani groaned. "Because that asshole is sick. I just got back from his 'torture offices' and saw his handiwork first hand. I think we should seriously consider getting the hell out of here again. Like Travis and Pablo. They proved that it wasn't that hard."

Darren pursed his lips.

"Well... maybe we don't need to run. Maybe we can make this community safer from the inside? I think it would be much safer here than out there with a few changes, don't you?" Darren suggested carefully and then glanced to Eli. "See, my buddy Eli was... sharing some ideas with me about how we could improve the community. Isn't that right?"

Eli shook his head. Not because Darren was wrong, but because this was all a little too casual. He was surprised that Danica – Dani – let it get this far. He thought he’d have to react as soon as she saw him in here, holding a gun, armed with a lot more. Eli figured her calm was because of Cory. Between him and the men he was recruiting and arming, she must have been desensitized to the sight.

Danica’s unprompted criticism of the Fearless Leader, however, was a highly positive sign. There was no way she could have intuited that he needed to hear that. The feelings must have been genuine.

“I’m here to kill Cory,” he went ahead and announced. “What happens after that is your business.”

He didn’t raise his gun hand, but he did make a slight gesture with it – towards the bed.

“Sit down,” he said – ordered, really – as he strafed around her, making sure to lock the door again. “Now before you came in, I asked your brother a question.”

He turned to Darren.

"Hold your rodeos, did you say you were going to kill Cory." Danica interrupted Darren incredulously before he could respond.

Darren sighed; he should have seen that one coming. Danica seemed far more keen on the 'running away' idea. The 'killing Cory' idea was more his kind of solution. But he knew Danica. She could be convinced if they presented her with something more substantial. The downside was that he didn't really have anything substantial to share -- he hoped Eli had more of an idea on this one. Otherwise they were legitimately dead.

"Just... hear us out for a bit, okay?" Darren pleaded with her. "Do you really wanna leave this place in his hands? We both know this isn't some phase anymore, it's only going to get worse."

She looked at him with a conflicted expression on her face. She knew he was right, and ultimately nodded her consent. She wasn't happy when they had to kidnap that guy from Vernal either. She hadn't explicitly spoke out against it, but the way she looked at him told Darren all he needed to know. He couldn't tell her he was doing it to keep her safe. She wouldn't accept that answer. So he had to stay silent through it.

"Building D. The southernmost building with the diner attached. The office space he uses as his seat of power also has some spare offices that he re-purposed into holding cells. The rooms are pretty bloody, so I guess it goes down in there."

"It does." Danica confirmed for him.

"But I don't know if he does it alone or not. I just know that nobody ever comes out there without an injury that isn't permanent in some way. He doesn't even always do it for information, sometimes he just wants to beat someone up. Bringing in prisoners from your time outside the community is considered a good way to get on his good side." Darren explained casually. "Someone once explained that it was like bringing food to a lion so he doesn't eat you."

Eli scowled – not at Darren, but at his story. Every time he learned something new about Cory, he wanted to kill him more.

He turned to Danica. The way she confirmed where the torture went down made him think she was a little more knowledgeable on the subject.

“Walk me through it,” he ordered.

He was skipping the ‘getting-to-know-you’s- and getting right down to business. He was on a time limit, after all, and every second Cory was still breathing was a second too long.

“You bring a prisoner in, and what happens?” he asked. “A to Z.”

The kid that they had brought in earlier today was the first prisoner that Darren had brought in. This morning was the first time he had left the community at all since Cory took charge. He thought back to the process.

"Well, you take the prisoner to the offices of Building D. Then you usually hand off the prisoner and anything he had on him at the time to them and they take him back to the offices I guess. They also take the name of the person that brought him in and they get bonus rations for their effort. That's about all I know."

Darren had explained what little he knew. The truth was, after handing the prisoner to Cory, most people didn't really see what happened. The only ones that walked out were usually people who were being punished. But the prisoners were treated worse than the residents, that much was obvious. They almost never came out after going in.

"I talked to Dr. Thompson a little bit. She's the one Cory calls when one of his prisoners needs to be kept alive for whatever reason." Danica picked it up from there. "I got the idea from her that he carries out the beatings alone and Andrea handles everything while he is in there. But I don't know how reliable that is."

Eli nodded at the siblings’ information, especially what Danica said about Cory taking care of the beatings on his own. He had hoped that would be the case. Of course, he also hoped one of them would have been more certain about it. Even with this inside info, he was still flying pretty blind.

He had the kernel of an idea, though. A very risky idea. Potentially a very stupid one.

“Say this happens,” he said, deciding to explore it anyway. “Say you bring in a prisoner, and he gets taken to a back office, but he still has something on him. A gun, say, or a knife…”

He trails off. That seemed far-fetched already. He had to imagine the guards would search this hypothetical prisoner before putting him in a room with Cory. Maybe they could pull off hiding a piece somewhere, like Eli had managed with Wendy. But maybe not.

There was a spark in his eye. “Better yet – imagine something’s in there already, waiting for him. Then Cory comes in, the door closes, the beatings commence – except they don’t. Except instead, it’s Cory the one ends up worse for wear.”

He paused, relishing the thought for a moment. He realized his gaze had drifted from Darren and Danica. He redirected it.

“What would happen then?”

Danica crossed her legs and thought about it.

She had a lot of questions for this guy. But most of them were personal. Like who the hell are you? Were you always a part of this community? Why do you want Cory dead so badly? Though she supposed that last one was pretty self-explanatory. Though she was still curious. Unfortunately, this wasn't exactly the time. There was a lot going on right now and rather suddenly at that. And she was okay with going down this rabbit hole for now.

"Well, in that hypothetical situation, that someone might have the leg up. Though armed or not, I wouldn't want to be stuck in a room alone with Cory. He's crazier than a drugged up rodeo clown and stronger than a pissed off bull."

Danica stopped and rubbed her chin thoughtfully. It was pretty obvious what Eli was suggesting. Use Darren and herself to slip Eli into the prison and have him take care of the guy one on one. A stupid plan if there ever was one. It was as dangerous for them as it was for him though. They were taking a huge risk just by even considering it.

"On the other hand, the guy is pretty cocky, he wouldn't run from a fight. And with the element of surprise, you might be able to get something off on him. But the guards would restrain you first with ropes; you'd need a way to break through them before Cory arrived. And even if you did manage to somehow take Cory out, you'd still have to worry about getting out of there alive. He keeps a decent sized crew on alert at all hours. He had the windows reinforced with iron the same morning he took over, so you wouldn't be able to get out that way without an explosive."

"We could organize a distraction of some sort." Darren suggested. "Maybe start an argument with some of the guys up front and draw attention there. He wouldn't have that many guys around at this hour anyway, even luring one or two extras up there is a victory."

Eli considered the information. It wasn’t exactly promising, but it wasn’t dissuading him either. In fact, he was at least a little bit excited that they even had the beginnings of a plan. It was more than he came in with.

“Distractions won’t be a problem,” he said, his expression thoughtful.

He remembered the nail grenade he took with him, still in one of the pockets on his jacket. That would be plenty distracting, if it came down to it. He also remembered the flare gun. Launching that into the clear Wyoming sky would also kick-start some chaos, as Jimmy started picking off Green River guards – provided he was in place, which Eli thought he was, but couldn’t know for sure.

He scratched at his stubble, looking even more thoughtful now.

“If you tried, could you figure out which office they would take me to?” he asked, dropping the ‘hypothetical someone’ pretext. “Could you plant something there? Under the chair, maybe? Something like this?”

He held up his gun and arched his eyebrow. They brought up the matter of escaping too. That was also kind of important.

“An’ could the other one get their hands on the keys to a vehicle?” he also asked. “You could be on it or not, it’s up to you if you want to stick around and see how this all shakes out. But I’m gonna need an out. A quick one.”

Brandon spluttered as the water hit his face. The world was fuzzy and spun a little. He could see yellow hair. His vision began to clear and he could make out a face he didn't recognize looming over him. There was a stranger in front of him. He was still in Green River. He didn't know anything else about the situation, if there were guards or if they were alone. His hands weren't bounf though, he could tell that much. Panic and anger flared up in him. He was still in danger.

He reached out again and grabbed her, this time by the throat. He brought her face to his, this time headbutting her on the nose. The blow made his head feel like his beains might pop out of his ears. His body was wracked with the pain of the effort but it still had strength enough to turn the both of them over and put his weight on top of her. He held fast to her throat putting just enough pressure on that she couldn't cry out. His left eye was still swollen shut so he couldn't see anything. He knelt on top of her, putting his left knee on her right arm so she couldn't swing at him from his blind side.

"You make a fucking move... you make a fucking peep and I crush your windpipe." he said quietly in between heavy breaths, moving his thumb over her trachea menacingly.

He had never hit a woman before today. Now he'd hit two.

"Blink three times if you don't want me to do that." he whispered.

...

"We could bushwack them. Take some if not all of them hostage, maybe set up a trade. That will at least keep them looking our direction while Eli and Jimmy get to work. With the BAR, my rifle, an M-16, a Tommy gun, a MAC-10 and an Uzi that gives us enough full-auto fire power to take out a small army. If they aren't smart enough to give up then we can kill them easily enough. The BAR is packing .303s, nothing short of an armored car is going to stop that. So long as we take them by surprise we can pull this off." Emily said, thinking outloud more than explaining.

One problem though, who was going to be using all these guns? Emily felt like the situation was straight forward enough. These were bad people or at least regular people who were happy enough to follow a monster. They had one of their own more importantly. If she had to kill every last one of them to get Brandon back she'd do it. But that was just her. She had no idea if anyone else present was willing or able to do the same. Willow would do it but she was high and couldn't be depended upon. Annie and Antonio seemed especially opposed to this kind of thing which was understandable but more than a little idealistic. Jen and Nolan she had no idea about. Maybe Emmett was up for it but she didn't know for a fact, because she didn't know the first god damned thing about him.

"We can do this. Is anybody else okay with that? It could mean a fight, there's a good chance it will. We will probably kill people if we do this and we could all die but I don't see how that's different from any other day." Emily said plainly hopeful somebody else could think of an alternative.

The first rule of working in a detainment center was that any time you were working on a prisoner, you needed to make sure he or she was properly restrained at all times. Dr. Thompson, however, was not a detainment officer. She was a doctor. Her interest was in helping people above all else. She focused so much on that job that, for a brief few moments, she forgot who she was dealing with. By the time she realized that mistake, he had his hand gripped around her throat. She had only a brief moment of panic and realization allowed to her; when he headbutt her, she was knocked senseless for a few moments, only able to feel pain coursing through her face and the stars in front of her eyes.

After those few seconds passed and she regained herself, and Alexa came to realize he was on top of her, pinning her to the ground by her throat. His leg was also pinning her right arm to the ground as well. She wasn't sure if her nose was broken or not, but it hurt and she could feel blood running from her nostrils. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she could barely breathe -- she opened her mouth, she wanted to tell him Stop, I am a doctor! But she could barely utter even a sound. And there was no way she could fight back; if anything, Alexa was a little overweight so as badly injured as this man was was, she was still completely outclassed in strength.

This is it. I'm going to die.

He continued to glare down at her with hellish intent in his one visible eye. She returned his gaze with wide, terrified eyes. But she still had enough wherewithal to blink three times. It was the only door open to her.

* * * * *

"I can get the keys to a vehicle easy." Darren suggested. "I'll even drive it for a quicker getaway. No matter what happens, I'm gonna look pretty suspicious when all this is over. So getting out of town for a few days might be a good idea before coming back."

The diner held all the vehicle keys as a precaution. There wouldn't be many people there tonight, but it would be highly unlikely that he could steal a pair. He would need to go through whoever was working there tonight. If it was his new girlfriend, Patricia, it would be easy. But he doubted she was working the night shift. And even if she was, the fact that he was there picking up keys would be pretty damning evidence when the chaos started. Getting out for a few days was probably the best choice available to him, even if Cory was taken down somehow.

"I was just delivering some supplies to Dr. Thompson, who got called back there to give someone treatment." Danica took over. "Normally it would be hard to get past the guards without explicit permission, since Cory doesn't like people going back there, but Dr. Thompson told them that I was her 'temporary assistant' and that she would need my help, so they let me pass. I could probably leverage that to get back there again."

"How would you know which room they would use?" Darren asked the obvious question.

He had never been back there personally, but there would presumably be a fair number of offices. How would anyone know which one they were going to take the next prisoner to? They certainly didn't have enough guns to plant one in every room.

"Actually, there aren't that many offices he has set aside for prisoners. Maybe six? I am sure I can find a way to trick them into using the room that we want."

Danica looked pretty confident in herself. Darren didn't like the idea of her putting herself in enemy territory like that to plant a gun of all things, but they didn't have many other choices open to them. She was right, she would have the easiest time getting past the guards right now. All he could do was trust her. And hope that this Eli guy could really pull this off.

* * * * *

Nolan pursed his lips and thought about Emily's plan. It was definitely risky, but that was nothing new. It was doable as well, they did have the firepower to pull it off. But did they have the manpower to handle that many hostages?

"I am in favor of that plan." Antonio broke his recent silence to announce. "A hostage trade would be far less bloody that any other idea that I can think of."

"What if these people don't care about their hostages?" Nolan voiced his primary concern with the plan. "I don't know much about this Cory guy, but he doesn't seem like the kind of person that would care. And even if the people do, he might be able to scare them into not caring either. Then the only thing we managed to do is turn the gaze of an armed community in our direction."

"Fear will only get him so far. It won't buy loyalty. If Cory tells them to disregard their friends so openly, it will only serve to fuel the fires against him at a time he might not be able to afford it. I think it is worth an attempt if nothing else." Antonio's tone of voice sounded very matter-of-fact. "Even violent gangs will negotiate with each other at times when one of their own is captured."

"But don't they usually kill each other afterward?" Nolan frowned.

"But before that, they do negotiate." Antonio didn't exactly inspire confidence in him with that.

If this was to work, they would need to take as many hostages as possible. Just trading one or two probably would not be enough. But the more hostages they tried to take, the riskier the proposition would be.

"How many people can you see down there?" Nolan asked.

"Five." Jen answered him. "They look like they're just looking at the fire though. Not like they can do much. I doubt they'll be sticking around for too long."

"With our car stripes, we could probably catch them off guard even if we drove right up next to them." Nolan contemplated the possibility. "We just need to surprise them, that's all."
