Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.
Eli had his answer. It seemed sincere, but Eli couldn’t know for sure. This guy could be a good liar.

Why would he lie? Eli asked himself. It sounds like Cory’s office is the most dangerous spot in this place. If he wants me dead, that’s probably where he’d send me anyway.

“Don’t worry about me, worry about yourself,” Eli said. “Shouldn’t be too hard. How many guys we talkin’, what do they have on them ‘sides Kevlar?”

* * *

The radio’s silence haunted Annie. Why isn’t Eli answering? Is he already dead? Is Jimmy? Wait, is that…?

“Is that smoke?” she finished her question out loud.

It was legitimately hard to tell. It was the night time and it was far away, and if it was smoke, it was just barely cresting over their hilly surroundings.

More posts, more Busey.
Emily turned the headlights off and stepped out of the van. She motioned for Antonio to do the same. Without the light from the cars it was now easy to see what Annie was talking about. The light from the fire was hard to see but there was a faint glow and the fire was illuminating the smoke. It made her a little corcerned. If that wasn't their camp burning then it least let Green River know they had company. Which meant there was no need for this code business any more.

"Fuck it. Give me that thing. Eli, answer the fucking radio." she said as she grabbed the radio from Nolan and pressed the button.

"I am going to worry because I want you to-"

Darren froze once again. He might be speaking too loudly right now. What he was about to say he could not let anybody else hear.

"Because I want you to kill him." Darren said more quietly. "I'll admit, we've had an easier time with food and supplies since he took over, but he is a fucking lunatic. I am tired of worrying about what body part of mine he will cut off if I screw up just once. I don't wanna be the next Dickless Dick. Some people cooperate because they care about food more than survival while others suck his dick because he gives them power. But most of us want him gone. You'd be doing this entire community a favor if you pulled off a stunt like that. I would even be willing to help if you could convince me this wasn't a suicide mission you were on."

Darren wasn't sure if his plea was getting through, but he had to try. Of course, he doubted that words enough wouldn't be enough to get through to him. He needed information.

"They are armed in SWAT gear. The best stuff from the armory, hands down. Automatic shotguns, assault rifles, riot shields, tear gas, you name it." Darren conceded. "Most of them don't have much training. A lot of them are just normal guys and gals that sold themselves out for more privileges and benefits. Except Andrea, but she has the common honor of being both a former deputy and a bitch."

* * * * *

Nolan frowned. Smoke. Smoke could mean a lot of things. But without getting a closer look, they would be able to do little more than speculate on it.

"We should check it out." Nolan cautiously suggested. "From a distance I mean. Once we are in sight, we have binoculars and a sniper rifle."

"Yeah, I can shoot 'em!" Willow added hastily.

"And Willow is definitely not going to be the one using either of them." He added.

Again, there was no response from Eli. Annie didn’t expect one. At this point, if he wasn’t answering, it wasn’t because they weren’t asking forcefully enough. Though she understood and even shared Emily’s frustration.

As for Nolan, he was definitely right about keeping a gun out of Willow’s hands. Annie was less with him on the matter of investigating, but what else were they going to do? There didn’t seem to be any good options.

“Okay,” she said with a hesitant nod. “Then let’s check it out.”

* * *

Eli hesitated. He found himself slightly raising and lowering his aim, unsure what to make of everything Darren had just said.

“Look, I don’t give a shit about the whys,” Eli said. “You threw in with a monster. I can’t trust you. I should kill you.”

He scratched at his chin. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure what he should do. If this guy was on the up-and-up, he could be tremendously helpful. He could get him close to Cory, maybe.

But maybe he was just telling him what he thought he wanted to hear. Maybe he was saying what he was saying because he was handcuffed to a radiator and there was a gun on him. The second that wasn’t true, maybe his tune would be totally different. Eli just couldn’t be sure, and he couldn’t risk it.

His information sounded believable, at least. Eli decided to press for more.

“You never told me how many,” he said. “How many of Cory’s goons between us and him?”

Darren sighed. Of course, what was he expecting? It was just as well. It was a lot safer not to throw one's lot in with a crazy person. And this guy was definitely not all there. He wasn't sure what his beef with Cory was, but he didn't need much imagination to come up with some guesses.

"I don't really know. I would guess about twenty-five that are loyal to him, at least." Darren informed the man uncertainly.

Before the conversation could continue further, there was a swift knocking on Darren's door.

"Bro. We need to talk." A muffled voice said from the other side of the door. "It's important."

Shit, it was Danica! What was she doing here right now? This was the absolute worst time that she could show up!

Darren’s answer made Eli cringe. That was a lot of men. Too many. He tried to imagine scenarios where he got through them all, killed Cory, and then made his escape in one piece. He couldn’t imagine many of them.

His thoughts got stuck on something Darren said a minute ago, however. Something about cutting off limbs. That afternoon, Pablo had also said something about Cory and his predilection for cruel and unusual punishment. Maybe that was a way in. Maybe…

His thinking was cut short by a knock on the door. He looked at Darren with alarm, and then raised his weapon again.

She said bro. Was she being familiar, or did she mean that literally? Either way, he hoped his next threat would be effective.

“Say anything stupid, and you both die,” he warned. “Her first, then you.”

He walked backwards besides the door, pinning his back to the wall. He reached out with his other hand and unlocked it. Then he waited.

Darren gulped. This guy was as dangerous as he was intense. He had absolutely no idea what this guy was capable of or if he would even survive this encounter with him. The only thing he did know was that Danica could absolutely not get involved. Even if it was only by four years, she was his baby sister. He was not about to get her wrapped up in all of this.

"Oh, hey sis!" He called out to her. "Can you come back later? I'm, uh... a little busy!"

"Doing what?" She called back through the door. "This is important."

Fuck, I need to get her to go away. No questions asked. What can I say?

"I'm masturbating!"

There was no response. Silence hung in the air for only a few moments, but it was a few moments too long for Darren. It wasn't the answer he wanted to give her, but it was the only one that came to mind that would stop her from asking questions.

"I'll be back in ten minutes then." She finally replied.

Darren visibly relaxed as he heard her leave to go to her own room next door. The walls between rooms were pretty thick for obvious reasons. If they stayed quiet, she probably wouldn't even know that someone was in here with him.

Thank God.

Click. Eli locked the door again. It didn’t look like he was going to have to take another hostage after all.

He gave Darren an awkward look.

“That was, um… good thinking,” he said.

And it was. He got his sister – and he said sis, so she was definitely that – away from the room without incident. He had proven again that he was willing to cooperate. Eli was conflicted.

“You really want Cory dead?” he asked.

As if just making him repeat it would make it any truer, Eli thought, annoyed at himself. If he couldn’t see into his soul before, why would he be able to now? But if it was true, if he was willing to help… Well shit. That was a game-changer.

"Yes." Darren answered bluntly.

The community was stronger, but they weren't safer. In fact, everything felt less safe. At first he thought it would pass, but he was becoming more and more convinced that, if anything, it was only going to get worse. If Cory got bored with the community, there was no telling what would happen. His sister was the only family he had left in the world. He was absolutely certain that killing Cory would make this place safer not only for her, but for everyone. And maybe it would help him feel better about the man he passed on to Cory to be killed -- an action that churned his stomach more and more as he thought about it all in hindsight.

"I don't know what you have planned, but you can't do it alone."

Eli waved his gunhand at the door as he mentally chewed over Darren’s assurance.

“What about your sister?” he asked. “What’s she want?”

"The same." Darren admitted hesitantly. "But I don't want her involved in any of this."

“No?” Eli asked, in a tone that was almost mocking.

He wasn’t sure where he was going with this. He didn’t know how he was supposed to trust one resident of this camp, let alone two.

“If you’re involved, and it goes wrong, what happens to her?”

Darren shifted uncomfortably against the radiator and looked down at the ground awkwardly. He was probably right on that count. If he did get found out as part of a coup, then his sister would probably be in even worse trouble than if she was just involved in the first place. If she was involved, she probably just died. If he tried to keep her out, then...

He shuddered at the thought.

"Well, what do you suggest then?" He asked hesitantly.

* * * * *

Once over the hill, while keeping the headlights off to avoid drawing attention to themselves, the van and truck pulled to a stop along the edge of the highway. From the elevated highway, they could see the houses of Green River off in the distance. From those houses, a plume of smoke and orange glow radiated. There was definitely a fire raging over there. And Jen had a sneaking suspicion that Eli was behind it, in one way or another.

Jen stopped her motorcycle and brought the binoculars to her eyes.

"It's hard to see through the smoke." She commented to the others as they stepped out of the van to get a better look. "You might be able to get a better view with the sniper rifle."

Eli’s gaze became intense. Without meaning to, he curled his lip as a battle played out in his thoughts. A part of him – not a small part, either – was still considering putting a bullet through Darren’s head. He could be lying to him. He could be loyal to Cory and just angling for an opportunity to escape and warn him. He could be just as sick, just as depraved.

“I suggest you give me a reason to trust you,” Eli said. “Give me something.

"Nothing I can say would really change your opinion, would it?"

Darren shrugged. He expected that question and had been thinking of an answer for it. But nothing he could say would really clear him of any scrutiny. And Darren wasn't about to beg or plead for his life.

"I could tell you that I know the layout of the building. And I could tell you that I can get you past the guards. And I could tell you that my motivation is making this place a safe place to live for my sister. But it doesn't really mean anything if you don't trust me."
