"Fuck." Emily cursed under her breath.

They couldn't find Brandon. That meant they must have him. That meant they couldn't waste a second. She knitted her brow, freshly annoyed at Eli's departure now they had a genuine emergency. He'd be well outside the range of their radios even under ideal conditions.

"Mount up. Emmett, Jen, Antonio and myself. Annie, you should come too we made need you. Just keep your head down. Nolan, did you get a look at their car?" Emily said as she loaded an extra magazine for her rifle.

"Barely." Nolan groaned and rubbed his head thoughtfully. "Silver minivan with a stripe painted on it."

When it looked like Annie was done looking him over, Jen reached her left hand out to him. With a subtle smile and a nod, he accepted the hand and she helped him back to his feet. He wavered unsteadily for a moment, but managed to catch himself against the pillar and recover. His body was understandably a little shaky from the experience.

"I'm going too."

"I think we should all go." Jen followed up. "Now that we know it's dangerous down here, we shouldn't split up even more."

"Whatever we're doing let's do it now. Go get the others I'll get the van." Emily said as she made her way to the van.

They were about to push that machine to its limit, their assailants had a head start. She hoped they could make up the distance in that thing. The job of informing Willow was going to fall to somebody else. Emily was more than a little distressed, she really didn't envy Willow what she was about to go thtough. Why would they take one of theirs? Ransom? Seemed like a dangerous play. It'd most likely end in blood. She really hoped it wouldn't be his.

Jen took the hint, but wasn't glad it had to be her. But she really was the most obvious choice for the job.

"Fine, I'll go tell Willow." She sighed. "Nolan, you're coming with me."

"What!? Why!?"

Jen turned and looked at Nolan with exacerbation; "Because you were the man with Brandon. And I ain't breaking the news to her by myself, fuck that."

"Alright, fine!" Nolan agreed.

The truth was that Willow was already in a pretty rough spot. And Jen knew that better than anyone. And she also knew that she didn't want to break the news to her all by herself. She wanted someone else to help her kick Willow's ass into action if she froze or broke down or something. They couldn't afford to be dealing with a distraught Willow right now.

“We’re all going,” Annie echoed Jen’s sentiment, then followed Jen and Nolan inside.

She wasn’t about to leave Connor and Kelsey alone here with just Willow and Nolan as guards. Who knew what other dangers lingered around here? Maybe there were more bad guys, like whoever took Brandon. Maybe they were being watched right now.

The thought added another unwelcome layer of fear. Her heart was already skipping too fast, she was so worried. She may have been mad at Brandon, may have been disappointed in him – but this was still a nightmare.

“Careful,” she advised Nolan hurriedly, as she trailed him. “You may have a concussion.”

She pushed open the door to the hotel for them.

“Connor, Kelsey!” she called, cringing at what she was about to say. “Come here, hurry. Bring your weapons!”

Antonio had heard the gunshots as clearly as everyone else. Yet while most of the group was going outside to see what was going on, Antonio had opted to stay behind in the hotel with the kids. With so many unknowns, it was best if someone stayed behind to make sure that they were okay -- this could be anything from Nolan and Brandon shooting a few fallen to a large scale attack. But it sure as hell sounded like a gunfight. And while it was quiet now, that didn't mean anything.

"Are Brandon and Nolan okay?" Kelsey asked him.

The three of them were hunkered down in a hotel room near the back entrance; the door was shut and the curtains were closed and Antonio had his shotgun in his arms ready for anything that came their way.

"I am sure they are fine." Antonio tried to console her. "They are both tough kids."

They had been waiting awkwardly for a few minutes now. The gunfire had been short lived and long since stopped, but he wasn't willing to move out until he knew that whatever was going on outside had been resolved. And, worst case scenario... he would wait until the storm had passed. Though he hoped it would not come down to that. Antonio was a pretty good priest. But he would be a terrible father figure. He was not good at getting close to people -- his profession required that he maintain reasonable distance from others. Close and personal relationships were things he wasn't good at even before becoming a man of the cloth.

So he was happy when his prayers were answered and Annie's voice called out to everyone from outside the room.

"Alright guys." Antonio glanced at the kids. "Grab your stuff and let's go."

He went for the door and pulled it open; he was the first one out and quickly saw Annie by the door. He motioned for the kids to follow him out.

"What happened out there?" He asked the doctor. "Is everyone okay?"

It was probably a good thing they hadn't unpacked much of their stuff for the night yet. Antonio got the feeling they weren't gonna be getting much rest tonight.

* * * * *

"Just let me do the talking, okay, Nolan?"

Jen was lecturing Nolan as the two of them moved up the stairs to second floor. It wasn't much of a mystery that Brandon and Willow had gone up there. And Jen even knew that they were in room 212 up there too -- a fact that she knew after asking Willow earlier. Jen had wanted to make sure nobody slept in the room directly below them, which ended up being room 112. It was an important thing to know.

"Okay, okay." Nolan agreed once again.

"Annie said you might have a concussion." Jen explained as she opened the door to the second floor and the two filed onto it. "So just sit and relax while I talk to Willow and..."

Jen froze in her tracks and slowly trailed off mid-sentence. Nolan similarly froze and went wide-eyed.

"Hey guuuuys, what's uuuup!?" Willow was standing in the middle of the hallway with a joint between her teeth. "Do you, like... want some of this? This is the best fuckin' high I have ever had! I seriously, I just seriously don't even know where I am right now. Do you? Cause if you can tell me, I am baked like a cake right now. I'm just tryin' to find the magic cupcake, did I say that already?"

Willow paused and looked up at the ceiling.

"What was I... what?"

"Willow, where are your clothes!?" Jen screamed at the naked woman in the hallway.

"Should I be looking at this!?" Nolan asked uncertainly.

"Clothes?" Willow looked at the pair quizzically; she looked down at herself, spun around a few times, and then shrugged. "Whaddya mean? You lost me there, bro. This jacket is the best!"

Jen grit her teeth together. This was great, just fucking great. They had an emergency going on right now, and Willow was roaming around the hotel stark naked while baked on weed and painkillers! This was just too much, she was willing to deal with problem when nothing was on the line, but this was the absolute worst time for her to be going through this. This woman had a serious substance abuse problem and as soon as this situation was behind them, Jen was going to put her foot down on it. Even if it means stealing Willow's pain medication, this was just something that they did not have the luxury of worrying about now.

"Yes, you should be looking." Jen growled. "Nolan grab one arm, I'll grab the other."

"Uh, sure." Nolan agreed uncertainly.

They both grabbed one of her arms and started leading her back to her room. Jen more forcefully than Nolan, who looked really unsure of whether or not he should be doing this right now. When they got to her room, Jen opened the door and forced Willow inside. Nolan followed behind the two of them.

"What are you doin' to me? Are we goin' somewhere?" Willow laughed. "This is fun! Wheee!"

"Brandon is missing and we don't have time to deal with your problems right now. Nolan and I are gonna get you dressed, and then we are all going to go get your boyfriend back." Jen sounded like a parent scolding her child.

Willow froze after Jen finished speaking. She looked at her friend with a little more coherency than she had so far during their exchange.

"Wait, whaddya mean... Brandon is missing?" Willow pulled her arm free of Jen's grasp and started marching toward the door. "THEN WE NEED TO SAVE HIM! LET'S GO TEAM!"

"Stop her!"

* * * * *

Five minutes later, Willow, Nolan, and Jen were the last ones to arrive outside. Antonio was already at the driver's seat of the truck and what little they had taken out was already safely packed away again. They were literally ready to go. They could have been gone sooner, but as soon as Willow learned that Brandon had been taken, she became a lot more cooperative. Kind of.

"Alright, I'm driving the van!" Willow announced as she pointed her hand in the air and marched towards the driver's seat.

"No." Jen grabbed Willow's arm and walked her into the back seat of the van instead. "We'll get him back, don't worry. But you need to relax. We will handle everything."

"... okay..." Willow sighed loudly. "But that isn't any fun. This is an adventure! Why can't I help?"

Nolan got the feeling she didn't exactly know the magnitude of the situation yet. Sure, she was more coherent now than she had been before, but that was like moving from a 2 up to a 3 on a 10-point scale. She probably didn't grasp the entire situation. And Nolan couldn't help but think that this was probably for the better. Willow was an odd one; at times she seemed like the strongest of them all and at other times the weakest. He couldn't really predict how she would react.

"Get in everyone, we're going!" Jen bellowed after she got Willow seated.

Emily leaned on the horn as she pulled up outside the door. The gunfire would have already drawn rotters from miles around anyway so she didn't have to worry about drawing more attention. They were wasting time, they should have already left. Finally Jen emerged with Willow in tow. The sight of her flopping around and talking shit made Emily's blood boil.

"What the fuck is this?" she demanded incredulously.

"THIS... is a quest!" Willow announced with a swing of her arms. "We are going to save my boyfriend from the evil ne'er do wells! Onward! Into the night my brothers and sisters!"

Jen ignored Emily's inquiry and went straight for her motorcycle. She was evidently not in any sort of mood to deal with this. And Nolan could understand the sentiment. Willow had already wasted far too much of their time. And every minute they spent sitting around was another minute that Brandon was gone -- and another minute he could be killed. Nolan didn't want to waste any more time with this.

He jumped in the van next to Kelsey.

"ONWARD!" Willow bellowed again as the van started to move towards the freeway again.

"As for Willow." Nolan explained. "Jen and I found her running down the hallways of the second floor naked. Don't even ask how we got her dressed again. She is blazed out of her fucking mind right now. A few friends told me you can mix some kinds of painkillers with weed to get a wicked high, but I never thought it would be anything like this."

"And it... is fucking... incredible. I never knew purple tasted so good!" Willow laughed. "No really, you guys gotta try this."

"And I rest my case." Nolan frowned.

"Willow just... shut the fuck up." Emily said gravely shaking her head

There wasn't any point chewing Willow out right now, she was tripping balls. As mad as Emily was about the entire situation and especially Willow's condition it was going to be hell when she came down. It'd serve her right. Right now Emily would settle for her silence.

"Nolan. You said this thing had a stripe right? What color was it?" she asked as the convoy began speeding on back the way they came.

"Purple!" Willow repeated.

Nolan rubbed his forehead in frustration, but didn't acknowledge her. He didn't want to encourage her even more. He wasn't sure how to deal with someone like that, he figured it might be best to treat them like a kid and give them as little to respond to as possible.

"I didn't see." Nolan answered Emily. "The light wasn't that good. But since it had a stripe, we already know where it's going."

"Maybe. It's a big leap, but we already know of another group in the area. We saw one of their vehicles already and these guys took off in that same direction we came from. It'd be pretty coincidental a separate group driving around with a big gay white-trash stripe on their van too, all other things considered. Hopefully we can catch them before they get where they're going. They wouldn't have as much of a lead on us if we'd been able to leave faster." Emily said giving Willow a disapproving glare in the mirror.

She didn't understand what Brandon saw in her. Right now she just seemed like a fuck up. Even so, Emily knew she was just being angry at her because it was easy. She should be angry at Brandon. There goes that laid back attitude she was fostering. Fuck it. Anger felt good.

"What the f... what were you two doing out there anyway? Why didn't you tell any of us you were heading out, even if it was just across a parking lot?" she asked, gripping the wheel with white knuckles.

Nolan shifted uncomfortably. He knew he had fucked up. It probably wasn't fair to blame himself like that, but he did anyway. Indirectly, he did have some fault in all of this.

"It wasn't my idea." He admitted somberly. "Brandon said he wanted my help with something, but wouldn't tell me what it was. After I agreed, he just led me across the lot to the jewelry store, gave me his gun, and said to watch his back while he went in for something really quick. I didn't really know what he was doing, I was just going along with it."

Nolan buried his face in his hands.

"I'm sorry. I should have been thinking about it more. I fucked up."

"He he he." Willow giggled. "You said tit more."

Annie’s frown morphed into a scowl. Leaving Kelsey and Connor alone with Nolan and Willow was never an option for her before – but now it was the antithesis of an option. Now it would have been like leaving them in the woods for the wolves to claim.

This was not the time for Willow to be mixing her pain meds with recreational drugs – that she did it showed a serious lack of judgment. Even before Brandon had been kidnapped, she knew they were in a dangerous locale. She knew what Eli and Jimmy were up to. What was she thinking!?

And what was Brandon thinking?! Annie knew he was the victim here, and not the one to blame, but Nolan’s comment about ‘the jewellery store’ had not escaped her attention.

Everyone was dealing with so much, had so much responsibility. It was too easy to forget that a lot of the people around her were still so young. But they were. So fucking young.

“Willow, shhh,” she said calmly, forcing herself to adopt the soothing voice she had perfected for giving flu shots to little kids. “It’s time to be quiet, okay?”

"God damn it, Brandon, you idiot!" Emily growled.

Brandon wasn't the kind of idiot who fucked around with meaningless shit like jewelry. She was reminded of something though. Her little plastic ring. He was getting a ring. He was going to propose to Willow who was currently too high to even register that he was in serious danger. After only knowing her about two weeks. The compounded stupidity of the situation made her want to beat her head against the steering wheel.

"You were following his lead. You were backing up a friend who was doing something grossly stupid. The idea was Brandon's and he left himself open. He's an idiot." Emily reassured Nolan.

He was always mister caution in everything else. This was... bitterly disappointing. Idiot. Idiot. He might have just gotten himself killed. Emily angrily rubbed her eye as it started watering up and calmed herself. They took him for a reason. They weren't about to just kill him. He was still alive and they could keep it that way.

"Oohhh...!" Willow hummed and looked at Annie. "Like a stealth mission! I got it! I'll be so quiet that they won't even know I'm here! I'll be like... like... an invisible person!"

When Willow stopped talking, Nolan was secretly extremely thankful for Annie. Maybe, if they were lucky, Willow would stay quiet for a while they were on the 'stealth mission'. At least then the rest of them could figure out what they were going to do. And maybe Kelsey would be less apprehensive; she was looking at Willow like she didn't recognize the woman anymore. And frankly... Nolan didn't either. Just how much weed had she smoked before they found her? Although he found himself wondering it, he also figured that he probably didn't want to know the answer.

"Yeah..." Nolan quietly agreed with Emily. "It was pretty stupid. This whole thing is stupid."

The van turned north onto 191. They were still in Vernal, but not for much longer. This freeway would practically deliver them straight to Green River. But the sky was already dark -- by the time they got to Green River, it would be the middle of the night. While that was probably for the best, the idea of it didn't sit well with Nolan. What were they going to do when they hit Green River?

"Speaking of stupid, do we have a plan for this right now?" Nolan asked abruptly. "I think we need something better than 'hope we can catch up to them' if we are going to get Brandon back."
