Nolan pursed his lips and leaned back in the seat he was sitting in. It was true what Brandon had said; he was not in great condition right now either. If anything, he was probably being a little overconfident about his abilities. A mistake he had often made in the past. But a mistake like that could be deadly these days. And not just for him. "Ah, you're probably right." He finally admitted with a wry smile. "She's probably in better shape than me. Right now, I mean." |

“Emily’s a good call,” Eli confirmed casually. As they were talking, he was adjusting his belt and feeling through its contents with his thumb. He felt safer and stronger with it around his waist. Wendy had robbed him of that feeling for half a day, and that was half a day he had spent feeling oddly naked. It felt good to be fully clothed again. Brandon said they needed gas, which was always going to be true, technically – but that wasn’t why Eli agreed to stop. They had only just resupplied the previous day, and Jimmy had his own reserve secured carefully in the bed of his truck. The restaurants, however, might have some useful stuff to recover. He figured it was worth making a brief stop to take a look. Might even be worth braving a few rotters. “Time’s a-wastin’, chicas,” he said. He hopped out of the van himself to prompt them further. |

Brandon exited the van and rolled his shoulders. They were about to be put to use. He imagined Jen would lead the vast majority of the rotters away but there would be stragglers and possibly some inside the restaurants and gas stations. They could deal with them now they had their melee weapons back. He made his way back down the line of vehicles and motioned for Emily to join him as he passed Jimmy's truck. She climbed out and followed him until he stopped in front of Jen. "Jen. We need you to draw these rotters away. Drive north a while, slowly so you get plenty of attention and then leave them in the dust and circle back around this way. Once you start to get close shut her off and walk her back so you don't draw any right back here again. Take Emily and a radio with you for back up in case things go awry." he explained. |

Jen nodded her head as she listened to Brandon's plan. All around, it seemed pretty solid. She got the feeling that they had done something like this before though. "No problem, B." Jen confirmed after he had finished giving her the rundown. "Leave it to me." After Emily had gotten on the back of the motorbike, Jen inched around the convoy until she reached the driver's side of Antonio's truck, where she stopped and waved to Antonio, who was driving, and Annie, her passenger. Antonio lowered his window and shot Jen a curious look. She got the idea that he hadn't been filled in on the plan yet." "What's up, you two?" He inquired curiously. "You still have the other radio? Can we borrow it for a few? Emily and I are running distraction duty." Antonio nodded slightly and turned away from them just long enough to pick the radio up off the seat beside him. He then held it out for them to take. Jen smiled and thanked Antonio as she took the radio and clipped it to her belt. Now if they ran into any trouble, which was unlikely, then they had a lifeline. A way to call for help. Now that they had the radio, they were good to go. Jen made her way to the front of the convoy and, when she felt Emily get a good grip, took off towards the little truck stop that the rotters were inhabiting. They had understandably parked a fair distance away from it to avoid drawing the ire of the mass of rotting bodies. That meant that as she approached, Jen and Emily became the sole targets of their attention. Just as she wanted. Jen turned the bike to skirt the edge of the horde and slowed down. "Ring ring ring!" Jen yelled out over the chorus of groans and revved the engine of her bike as loudly as she could. "Dinner's heeeere!" The sudden noise oxymoronically livened up the walking dead. The entire horde seemed to wake up from their hibernation as they started to shuffle in her direction. Jen revved the engine a few more times and slowly rolled the bike further from their reach, going slightly faster than they were able to walk. "Come on! You guys can do it!" She egged them on. It took a while, but eventually Jen and Emily managed to lure a majority of the horde northward and out of the truck stop area. She had to dodge a few smaller packs on their way north, but thankfully they kind of assimilated themselves into the large horde in the end. There would no doubt be a healthy population of rotters left, but at least the vast majority would be taken care of. With her job done, Jen revved up the engine one more time, gave Emily a heads up, and then sped up and left that horde of rotters in the dust. |

As Jen and Emily led the rotters away, Eli strapped on the arm and shoulder pads that had saved his life a couple times now. They were tight but the imprints the straps left on his skin were worth it. “You’ve learned from the best,” he heard Jimmy say nearby. He looked up to see the redhead on his feet, and nodding to Brandon. He also noticed the spear strapped to his back, and remembered the damage he did with it back on that run from Flint. |

She is so hot! Emily mouthed at Brandon as she climbed on the back of the bike. Brandon smirked back at her. The last time she'd ridden a bike she was sitting behind a bull dyke, she was fun but not Emily's preferred type. As much as she didn't like to admit it she loved a pretty face. Jen was also in very good shape, an athletic type like Emily herself. With a little smile she put her hands on Jen's waist and held on as they took off. They didn't get far before something caught Emily's eye. She tapped Jen and signaled for her to stop once they put some distance between them and the rotters. She grabbed the radio off Jen's belt and pressed the button. "Hey guys, guess what I saw just a little northeast of your position? Save money. Live better." she said before placing the radio back and gesturing for Jen to continue. They couldn't see it from their position because of the other buildings obstructing their view, but they seemed to have struck gold with this area. "Let's do a loop of that carpark, free up the approach to that Walmart." she yelled to Jen over the roar of the engine. |

Jen almost wished that Willow had not revealed the secret or Emily's orientation to her earlier. It made her question the way that Emily was holding onto her hips as she maneuvered the motorcycle through the rotters that were still on the streets ahead of them. Thankfully, the rotters were slow and easy to weave around -- and in doing so it focused Jennifer more on the rotters ahead of her than anything else. All she was concerned with after a minute or two after taking off down Lincoln was guiding these rotters away from this little stop along the highway. She almost didn't notice as Emily tapped her on the shoulder. "Good eye." Jen complimented Emily; the Walmart to their right was pretty big, but partially obscured by a few large loading trucks and buildings. She might have missed it if Emily hadn't been there. "Hang on, we'll lure 'em away!" Jen revved the engine loudly a few more times. The rotters behind them were slowly catching up, but the sound of the bike was getting the attention of a few more from the Walmart parking lot. Every rotter they could attract to them now was one less everyone else had to deal with later. As the closest rotters started closing in, Jen drove the motorcycle down the street at a slow enough pace to keep the rotters interested, guiding them off Lincoln and onto 35th which would take them around the car park that Emily had pointed out. John Kohl Buick and Chevrolet was what it was called, according to the signs. Not that it really mattered. |

Brandon watched through his sight as Jen and Emily lured a long procession of rotters behind them. He smiled at the sight of it. To really make their day there was a Walmart nearby too. There'd be plenty of stuff left over that looters wouldn't have thought to take. They may also find some food in these restaurants. He reigned in his enthusiasm though, there would still be rotters to deal with. As the other two disappeared from sight Brandon waited for the rotters to follow a good distance away. He nodded to Eli to begin their approach. The convoy crept forward as quietly as possible. Innevitably they drew a little attention, as a rotter rounded the corner of the gass station and caught sight of them. Brandon climbed out of the passenger seat as the van slowly crawled forward, allowing the van to roll past him and making his way behind it and towards the alerted rotter. With a steady confidence he swung at the rotter, his kukri burrying into its skull. No other rotters were forth coming. If there were more at the gas station they were most likely inside. The convoy made its first stop outside there. "Our fighters are clearing this place and maintaining a perimeter, everyone else scavenges. Food, drinks, gas and anything that could be helpful. Store to store. Don't split up, we do it the safe way, saving a little time isn't worth the risk if dividing the group any further." Brandon explained as clearly as possible without yelling. He knew Jimmy at least was confident in his own ability, and he wasn't an idiot but the last couple times they got separated they lost people. If Jimmy wanted to split up like back in Michigan he'd be doing it alone this time. Brandon judged it was himself, Eli and Jimmy who weretheir most capable in clise quarters. He wagered Antonio had seen his fair share of close engagements too so he could most likely hold the line. With Emmett's recent injury he was a riskier option, it'd be better to leave him out of any fighting for now and get him back to his old self as soon as possible. Nolan was unknown. He could probably swing well enough but he didn't have as much experience as the others. Annie was also able bodied but inexperienced. Willow was compketely out if the question as well as the kids. That left four guards and six scavengers. "You should all know where you fit in." |

"That means scavenging for me, doesn't it?" Nolan quipped. The implications were there; those that were more capable were those that would be keeping the rotters away while those that were less capable would be doing the majority of the scavenging. While he didn't like being thought of as crippled, in reality he kind of was. And while it was a little disappointing, both jobs were pretty important. This wasn't about being the star or the center of attention. This was the team effort called survival. "Don't take it personally." Willow sympathized with a small shrug. "Being shot tends to have that effect on people. Just look at Emmett." "I'm not, don't worry." "Oh, one more thing." Willow rose her voice a little so everyone could hear her. "This may be obvious, but I don't want any misunderstandings here. Don't shoot unless you absolutely have to. Doing this quietly will save us a lot of trouble." |

“Understood,” Annie said. “I guess you only learned so much,” Jimmy cut in, ignoring Willow entirely and looking to Brandon. “We need a buddy system, not a blob system.” “We do it Brandon’s way this time,” Eli said before he could elaborate. “And we’ll get it done faster if we skip the debate.” Jimmy shrugged. “Alright, Captain, if slow is how you like it.” “That restaurant first,” Eli pointed ahead with his knife, already drawn. He led the way. |

"Safe is how I like it." Brandon clarified. Back in Michigan they were finding food for around eighty people, this time they were feeding twelve so they could afford to take their time. They had split up that time because eighty people went through food very quickly and because they were looking for another group of scavengers. San Francisco was still a long way away though, so this time they could afford to take an extra hour or so to be safe as this could mean having enough supplies to keep going for a very long time before resupplying. Fewer stops meant fewer risks. The group advanced behind Eli, toward the closest restaurant. A McDonalds. Without power for refrigeration a lot of the food inside would have spoiled by now, but there could be a few things that were still salvageable. They couldn't see into the store from their side so Brandon made his way slightly around the corner to one of the windows. There were rotters inside. They probably hadn't started there though, they were pressed against the front door which opened inward. Likely they stumbled in and couldn't get back out. There were six that he could see. He signaled this to the others and crept back around to regroup with them. "They're pressed up against the door and windows trying to get out. We could probably go in the drive-thru window, clear the kitchen and take them out unawares from behind." he suggested in a hushed voice. |

Antonio nodded slowly at Brandon's plan. Frankly, it was still hard to overlook the events of yesterday in Antonio's head. Every time he saw Brandon or Eli, all he could visualize was the bodies laying on the ground by the garage after being executed. It left a bad taste in his mouth just thinking about it. But the presence of the fallen all around them preventing him from pondering on the matter too deeply. They were here to procure food and supplies. Hopefully enough to last them through the desert. And while Antonio did not have a knife to his name, Kelsey had been kind enough to lend him hers. Although the concept of a priest borrowing a knife from a 10-year old would have seemed ludicrous under any other circumstances. But he was thankful for it now. "Climbing through the drive-thru window might make a lot of nose depending on what is on the other side. It might also leave us vulnerable and without a good way out if there are more of them there that we can't see." Antonio gave his input calmly. "And that's assuming it's open. Maybe we could knock on the drive-thru window and lure all the rotters from the front into the back?" Nolan leapfrogged off Antonio's observation. "Or at least get them to turn around long enough to open the doors and take them out. Then we have an open playing field and a quick escape for whatever unknowns we have in the kitchen." |

"You're right. That's a better idea." Brandon admitted pointing at Nolan. Maybe Nolan understood things out here better than Brandon suspected. "Father, you're with Eli and I, we're going in first. Jimmy, you draw some attention to yourself at the drive-thru then bring up the rear, keep the exit clear for everyone." Jimmy was better suited to sticking to himself. Putting him in the rear made sense, it gave him the room to use that spear and he seemed to relish using it. He also liked to draw attention to himself. The group formed up behind Eli just around the corner. Brandon gave Jimmy the signal to draw some attention away from the entrance and prepared to make their move. |

Jimmy shrugged at the order. He was used to be being the guy in charge on missions like this and taking direction from Brandon rubbed him the wrong way a little. He brushed his annoyance aside, however, and complied. Look at it this way, he told himself. No responsibility. All you gotta do is kill rotters. He stopped at the drive through window. After looking around to make sure the exterior was clear, he raised his spear, and pounded the base of it into the glass. “Hey, can I get one order of biscuits and gravy?” he yelled, as he tapped the window over and over, aiming to grab the attention of anyone inside. “How about just your attention, please?” He heard shuffling, and then a face appeared on the other side of the glass. He kept smiling and kept tapping. He went at it harder and faster. |

Brandon peeked through the window to see the rotters instantly perk up at the noise Jimmy created on the other side of the building. With what was their equivalent of haste they shambled their way behind the counter and towards the window Jimmy was banging on. Brandon motioned for everyone to more forward and the group wound their way around to the entrance. Brandon and Eli were first in with Antonio holding the door for the others. As quietly as possible he made his way to the counter and peered in the back. The rotters from the front had formed up on the window, it looked like their were two more hiding in the back as there was now eight rotters in total. There was a door that separated the employee areas behind the counter from the dining area, it swung either way. "You guys hold that door. We're going to get their attention from this side, keep the counter between us and them and take them out." Brandon whispered to the others. Outside, Jimmy's distraction had drawn additional attention. Brandon could see from inside that at least another three rotters had taken an interest in the noise and begun moving on Jimmy's location. He waved to get Jimmy's attention and pointed in the direction of their approach. Jimmy was probably fully aware of them but good communication never hurt. As soon as the others were in position on the door Brandon pounded on the counter and whistled at the rotters inside. Their attentions divided and they began making their way one by one to the counter where Eli, Antonio and Brandon easily took them out without fear of being overrun. All three were practiced enough that killing these rotters presented only a small obstacle. As before, Brandon, Eli and Antonio lead the way inside. They were more concerned with clearing than scavenging so they left that detail to the others as they check the fridge and freezer. The back store room had a surprise for them. Inside was a rotter having a hard time getting to its feet. It was stuck. Somebody had impaled it, hopefully after reanimation, to a box which contained solid vegetable shortening for the fryers... with a sword. It obviously had attempted to move and the weight of the box caused it to lose balance and prevented it from regaining its footing. |
