"I mean... I understand why Eli did all of that, but I also understand why Annie would have some serious problems with it." Jen explained her beliefs on the matter of earlier with Willow after the latter had asked her opinion. "All in all, I'm neutral on the matter." The two young women had found a nice spot to sit down by the side of the lake and have a little heart to heart. The breeze that blew was pretty cool, but Jen didn't need that to tell her it was going to be a cold night. It wasn't winter yet, but it was starting to get to the time of year when nights could drop below freezing. Thankfully, Brandon knew a few tricks to keep everyone warm. That meant Jen didn't have to worry about the cold. She could just relax and enjoy the wide open view of the lake that they had and the overcast skies above it. Now if only she could enjoy the conversation a little bit more. "Yeah, I know what you mean." Willow let out a long sigh. "I thought I was against it, but now that I look back on it all, I think that it was actually the right thing to do. I think we would have been making a mistake by letting them go. Who knows what lengths they would go to in order to recoup those losses. I think we saved a lot of lives." "You said 'think' three times just now, Willow." Jen reminded her gently. "Killing people based off what you think they might do a pretty dangerous road to start going down. Those guys that we killed earlier... they might have started like that too." "Might." Willow repeated. "You don't know that for sure. That's all I'm trying to say here." Jen rolled her eyes. "Look, I was mad too. Those guys stole our crap and got away with it. But... I don't know if killing them was really the right thing to do." "I wasn't even worried about killing them." Willow shook her head. "Maybe that means I've become fucked up from all this time out here, but their lives weren't the ones I was concerned about. The main reason I didn't want to jump into that was because I was worried about our lives. I didn't want our lives to be in danger. But them? I don't think I even cared." Jen frowned and glanced to her left. Willow's gaze looked distant. It looked thoughtful. Maybe a little disturbed. She got the idea that Willow's outlook was concerning to her. Jen had no experience with this, but it was probably not easy to accept that kind of cold view on the outside world and people. She didn't know what to make of it, honestly. It was a little disturbing to hear something like that come from a friend. Her best friend, as of this moment. "Not gonna lie to you, it is pretty fucked up. But it might not be a bad thing. People these days... they're like animals. They can be cute and cuddly, but unpredictable. If you let them too close and they bare their fangs... it may already be too late." "That... was a surprisingly apt analogy." Willow remarked with a smirk and a sideways glance. "I know, right? I thought of it as I was talking and just went with it." "But it's also right. Wendy was a pretty good reminder of that." Jen nodded her agreement. That much, at least, they did agree on. It felt kind of nice to have that chat though. It wasn't really much, but it felt nice to be able to share her opinion without being worried about someone else getting on her case about it. She was almost sure that Eli would have given her a few narrow-eyed glanced from time to time if she had tried telling him her views. Besides, she wasn't here to think about it -- historically 'thinking' was not one of her strong suits. "How are the auto lessons going with Antonio?" Willow asked after a few minutes of silence. "Not bad, actually." Jen nodded her head. "I don't know if I could take one apart yet, but I am getting a pretty good feel for the inside of a car. Seeing Antonio not only take apart the engine, but explain everything he was doing, was really helpful. He's a really good teacher too." "I guess he'd have to be with his job." Willow mused. "Yeah, probably. I bet he's had to lecture a lot of college students in his time." Another lapse in the conversation came over them. "Say, you gonna keep that motorcycle?" Willow broke the silence. "Oh dude, that thing is sick. Eli might not let me keep it once it runs out of gas though. I'm gonna try and hang onto it though." "I wouldn't mind a real ride on it when I'm feeling a little stronger." Willow suggested. "Never ridden on a motorcycle before, it might be fun." "Done. That sound like something we can-" Jen stopped mid-sentence. A little ways down the shoreline, a good distance away from camp, she caught a glimpse of a familiar face approaching the lake. Nolan. He got right up to the water, peeled off his sweater and his shirt, then knelt down and started splashing water on his face. Jen fished the binoculars that Emmett had lent her out of her jacket and pressed them against her face. "And that was a sudden change of pace. You do realize you look creepy as shit doing that, right?" Willow interrupted her. "Yeah, but..." Jen protested without looking away. He looked pretty good without a shirt on. Emaciated, yes. But not a lot of body hair. And she could see he used to have more muscle mass. His right arm was pretty banged up though from the looks of the bandages. But all things considered, even in his current state, she could dig it. She watched as he reached into the pocket of his nearby jacket and pulled out a razor, which he then started using to go to town on his scraggly beard, using the water as a sort of mirror to help him out. "Wait a second... Jen, do you... have a crush on Nolan?" "What? Me? Nooooo. I mean... no..." Jen put down the binoculars and looked back at Willow like a guilty child. "Okay, yes. A little." "But you haven't even talked to him, have you?" Willow shot her a confused look. "Since when was talking a prerequisite for a crush? I just saw a picture of him from before and I thought he was hot!" Jen was quick to retort. "Besides, I don't have a lot of prospects here. Eli is kind of scary and that doesn't work for me. Brandon is taken, and even if he wasn't he is so smitten with you that I would never have a chance. Emmett is just... Emmett. And Antonio is a nice guy, but not only is he older than me, but he is a priest." "What about Jimmy?" "I like Jimmy, but in case you missed it, he is old enough to be my dad. On top of the fact that... well, there's a lot about Jimmy that would never work." Jen shrugged with an audible sigh. "Do you have any idea how hard it is for a black girl to get a boyfriend that isn't a douchebag? All the nice guys go after the pretty white or Asian girls. Hell, most of the douchebags do too. That pretty much leaves me eternally sidelined and forever alone!" She had gotten a little worked up during her tirade. When she glanced at Willow, the poor girl was visibly taken aback. And why wouldn't she be? She was hot and white. She probably had boys clambering over themselves to get to her her entire life. Jen never had any of that. Not even because of the all-girls schools she went to, but she got largely ignored by most boys for the white girls. It was hard not to get a little heated up about that. "Wow... that was... not what I was expecting from you." Willow finally said after a few seconds of awkward silence. "Er... sorry." She apologized with no small degree of embarrassment. "That's... kind of a sore spot for me. I just... well I already know that if he hooks up with anyone, it's gonna be Emily." Willow smiled and let out a soft chuckle that she tried to restrain. Jen turned her head and glared daggers at her. "No, no, it isn't like that." Willow raised a hand to apologize. "It's just that no, that isn't going to happen at all." "What do you mean?" Jen furled her brow. "I just mean that Nolan... isn't quite what Emily is looking for in a person." Jen tilted her head and blinked a few times while the gears in her head turned and tried to wrap themselves around what Willow was implying. After a few seconds, it clicked; "Wait, is Emily gay?" Willow nodded. "Well, shit!" Jen's spirits were lifted. "That means he is stuck with me! My only competition is batting for the other team!" "Maybe you should try talking to him first?" Willow suggested dryly. "You might talk to him and realize you hate his guts after a few minutes." "Yeah, well... maybe." "You should go right now." Willow tilted her head in his direction, where it looked like he was just about finished shaving. "He's alone and you would be able to chat him up in private for a little bit. Get to know him. And if you still like him after that, you can come to me and I'll give you some tips." "Heh, fine. I think I will do that. Thanks Willow, I appreciate it." As soon as Jen finished thanking Willow, Nolan stood up. He glanced down each side of the shoreline, but apparently didn't see Jen and Willow through the trees. Then he unbuckled his pants and shed the rest of his clothing right then and there. Jen frantically picked up the binoculars and looked through them just as he jumped into the frigid waters with a quick shout and started splashing water all over himself. "Oh. My. God." Willow muttered from behind her. "That is more Nolan than I bargained on seeing right now. I'm going to go now." "Right..." Jen absently acknowledged as she heard the rustling of Willow heading back towards the camp they had set up. "I'll, uhh... go talk to him later." |

Brandon sighed as he finished with his carbine. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon now. He should gave gotten started on a fire a while ago. Emily gave him her spare magazine which left her with a partially spent mag and him with a full one. They'd have to use them wisely. He said he was going to show them something and he was going to do so despite the sensitive situation they were all in. It was something that could save their lives and something like tgat shouldn't wait for people's feelings. Brandon stood up and placed his thumb and forefinger between his lips and whistled. "Connor! Kelsey! Bring it in, I've got something to show you." he called out as he made his way to the van again and took out two big empty bottles. |

Annie heard Brandon’s call, and then looked around for her son, finding him standing nearby. He looked back at her, obviously hesitant. She was hesitant herself, but for different reasons. She knew it was probably a lesson, however, and she couldn’t deny him that. It was what they were both here for. “Come on,” she said, and gave him a nod. He headed off to join Brandon by the beat-up Sienna. Annie slowly followed. |

"Hey Willow!" Kelsey jogged over the pink-haired woman and gave her a quick hug as she returned to the lot where the cars were parked. Willow smiled and hugged her back -- it was hard not to be grateful for the little things like that, especially right now. "Hey kiddo, what's up?" "Have you seen Nolan around?" She inquired innocently. "I was supposed to introduce you and Brandon to him." "Oh, you were? Well, uh... he's busy right now. He'll be back shortly though, don't worry." Willow assured the little girl with a pat on the head. "What were you doing?" Randall's daughter opened her mouth to say something, but was interrupted as Brandon made a call for both her and Connor to come check something out. Kelsey glanced over her shoulder to see Brandon making his way to the van, a motion which Willow copied. "We better go see what he wants." "You're coming too, Willow?" "Yeah, sure." Willow smirked and looked down at her. "What else was I doing now anyway? Besides, Brandon always has something cool to show us. I could learn a thing or two here too." Kelsey was apparently pretty happy to be treated to another one of Brandon's lessons as she quickly took off toward him. Willow had to take it a little slower right now and was swiftly left behind as Kelsey joined everyone else at the van. |

"Okay. I'm going to show you guys how to filter water. If you find a nice clear stream, water that's moving, you can just boil that and then it's okay to drink. You can even drink it straight in some cases but it's better to be safe if you have the choice. When you've got murky water or still water like in these lakes you first need to filter it. You can use just about anything as a filter so long as it's fine enough, we're going to be using a wad of toilet paper as our base filtering agent." he said as he took Connor's knife and cut a holein the side of one of the bottles. He removed the bottom of the bottle and then used the knife to screw a hole in the cap. He then took out some toilet paper and began packing it into the bottle, using up over half a roll which would be easily replaced. "Okay. Now what I want you guys to do is fill it to here with gravel, then to here with sand, then to here with finer gravel and then to here with sand again. Connor, I showed you how to make a Dakota firepit. Think you can start setting one up for us?" Brandon asked extending the knife handle to Connor. He turned to look at Annie with an easy expression. "Is now okay an okay time to talk to you?" he said inconsequentially as Connor was nearby. |

Connor eagerly nodded his assent as he accepted the knife. Anne watched him start the process, until Brandon asked his question and her gaze shifted reluctantly to him. Hardly, was the real answer to his question. Nothing had changed in the last hour or so. But if he was going to be persistent, she might as well get it over with. “Go ahead,” she said. |

Antonio had been idly keeping himself busy ever since Nolan ran off with one of his razors, a bar of soap, and a little travel sized bottle of shampoo -- all of which were Antonio's. He was a brave kid; the water out there was probably freezing, but he could understand the sentiment. Antonio was always concerned about his hygiene; even when nobody was around but him, he would use the local rivers back in Iowa City to keep himself somewhat clean. Meanwhile, Nolan looked and smelled like someone who hadn't seen water for two months. To say he was rank might be an understatement at this point. And now that he was no longer returning to Flint, this might be his last chance to fix that problem for a while. And Antonio would bet that he was particularly self conscious about that now that he was travelling with a group of other people who could all smell him. "Ah, Willow!" Antonio caught the young pink-haired woman as she was walking towards the van where Brandon was giving a lesson. "Do you have a moment?" She paused and turned to look at him with her hazel eyes. "Yeah, sure. What's up, father?" There were several reasons why he had wanted to catch Willow. From what Eli had mentioned, Willow, Brandon, Kelsey, and Eli were the most senior surviving members of their group. That meant they had knowledge that many of the others did not have. He had questions that he wanted answered. "First of all, Annie told me about what happened to you in Flint." "Oh yeah, that..." "I just wanted to say that your story of survival in that case is remarkable." Antonio told her sincerely. "And that I am sorry that you had to go through all of that." "It's okay. If I had to do it again, I would." She not-so-subtly glanced in Brandon's direction and smiled. "Every time." Antonio nodded in agreement. Annie also mentioned she had taken the shots for her boyfriend. And that was a refreshing sentiment to see. Seeing people care for each other. Although the people in this group obviously did care for each other, it was those not in the group that he had to be concerned about. Which brought him to the real reason he had approached Willow just now. "Say... do you have some time?" Antonio asked her. "I was hoping you could tell me the full story of your group. Eli told me the basics of the cure and Annie told me about your story of survival in Flint. But I don't know much about the rest of the journey." "Why the sudden interest?" She asked him. "I am trying to forgive Eli and the others for what I saw in Lincoln, but it is... difficult. I was thinking that knowing what you endured over the rest of your journey might help give me some insight and perspective on it all." He answered her truthfully. "And out of all the original members, you are the easiest one to talk to right now." Willow's face curled into one of amusement. She smirked and let out a soft chuckle, taking the chance to brush a few stray hairs out of her face and behind her ear before looking back up at him. "Yeah, I guess you're definitely right there." She mused and let out a sigh. "Brandon looks like he is having a talk with Annie anyway, so I suppose there isn't a rush in me getting over there. But before I start, is there a good place to sit anywhere around here?" |

"Connor doesn't know what what happened back in Lincoln does he? He knows something happened. If he asks me about it, what do I tell him?" Brandon asked now that Connor was out of earshot. He had no interest in trying to explain himself to Annie. It hurt to lose her respect, and it may even beone of the harder things to live with about what he did. She and Connor were safe, they would eat tonight and they would all be back on their way to San Francisco tomorrow morning because of what he and the others did. Part of him wanted to tell Annie he was wrong before, that when it came down to it it had been harder to do what he did than he ever imagined. That afterwards he felt dirty and ashamed and that he was sorry for how he behaved so... eager for it. He wasn't sorry he did it though. It was hard. It felt bad. But he'd do it again all the same. What he did need to know regarded her son. Brandon regarded honesty as a matter of respect. He didn't like keeping the truth from the younger members of the group, they deserved a lot of the same respect afforded adults in his opinion. But Connor was only thirteen and Kelsey was only ten. This may be something that would only serve to distress and confuse them. |

Annie breathed out through her nose. It was tough question, and not the one she expected. She thought he was about to justify his actions, maybe say something about the greater good. She had an answer for that. She didn’t have one for this. She had to come up with one, though, so she thought hard. “Not the truth,” she decided, finally. “He needs to know how to protect himself, he needs to know how to survive – but he doesn’t need to know this. There was a fight and we won. That’s all he needs to know.” |

About thirty minutes later, Nolan made his way back into the unofficial campgrounds. That is to say, where the cars were all parked and waiting. His shaggy head of hair was still moist from the absolutely freezing water of the lake, but at least it was clean. He even had that scraggly monstrosity removed from his face. His jaw felt so smooth that he couldn't help but run his hand across it and appreciate not being able to feel a matted mess of oily facial hair. For the first time in months, he felt clean and free from oil and filth. Before this all happened, he had been very meticulous on his hygiene; and while it was a small comfort in this world now, it was one he still had the wherewithal to appreciate. "Yo, Father Mendez, where do you want your stuff?" Nolan held out the remains of the bar of soap he had borrowed as he approached the priest. Antonio was sitting with the pink-haired woman Willow, who seemed to have a slightly difficult time making eye contact with him right now. He didn't really think much of it though. He had just interrupted their conversation. Maybe it was a confessional or something. Nolan suddenly felt a little awkward. "No offense, but I don't really have any interest in recycling soap and razors. Go ahead and keep them." Antonio assured him with an amused smirk. "Er, right. Thanks." Nolan bowed his head a little and quickly scuttled away from the two of them. Nearby, he saw Connor, Kelsey, and Brandon sitting near a makeshift fire pit. Annie was nearby too. There wasn't much to the fire, but after his dip in the lake, even a little warmth was as good as heaven right now. Plus, it was a pretty good opportunity for him to get to know Brandon a little. They were pretty close in age, they probably had a lot in common. All he had to do was find the right topic. Probably video games. Everyone played video games. It was a pretty safe bet. At the very least, it was a place to start. * * * * * The evening passed quickly. A small group effort led to the creation of a pretty decent dinner as the sun was setting. The air was still tense from the events of earlier, but things eased up a little as the night carried on and the temperature dropped. Nolan took special care to talk to everyone in the group at least a little bit before they retired. While it was hardly anything much, he found he got along pretty well with Willow and Brandon, just like Kelsey had predicted. Connor was a good kid too, he joined in on some of the game talk and quickly grew on Nolan. Annie was friendly as always, but understandably a little distant, while Jen actively seemed to go out of her way to talk to him. Nolan also learned why Kelsey was slightly hesitant around Eli. He radiated a sort of intensity that was off putting. But he had more on his plate than anyone else, so Nolan tried to keep that in mind. And of course, Nolan couldn't get any time with Emmett. But from what the others told him, that was a pretty tall order. By the time he fell asleep, he felt like he had a pretty good handle on most of the people in the group. And perhaps more importantly, he understood why Kelsey had been so hesitant to leave them behind. Despite their shortcomings, Nolan got the idea that they were all pretty good people. Even the taciturn Eli. * * * * * "God damn, it was freezing last night." Willow complained. The sun had just started rising in the east, though the first light of day was not nearly enough to ward off the below freezing temperatures from the night before. Willow was from New York, so she was used to brisk weather, but it was probably the wind chill that had been the worst. And they were lucky, a lot of that was cut off by the shelter of trees and cars they had camped themselves between. "Maybe all the rotters were cold last night too." Nolan suggested. "Could be why we didn't see any stragglers wander in during the night." "Maybe the cure to the infection is just winter weather." Jen added in. "As long as we don't let them inside, we win!" Most of the group was up. And Willow was willing to bet most of them didn't get much sleep in the cold, even with the small fire they had going all night that the two people on watch would make sure never went out. The nice thing about this much people though was that each individual person didn't need to keep watch as long and they could split the shifts better. Willow was thankful for that. "The faster we get this place cleaned up, the faster we can get inside the heated vehicles and be on our way." Antonio reminded them all gently as he tossed his shotgun in the back seat of his truck. |

Another night, another haunting. Eli didn’t even try to get much sleep, and the sleep he did get was restless, filled with visions of both the people he failed and the people he killed. Wendy was among the visions – which surprised Eli in the morning, as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and tried to remember what he dreamed. His recollection was hazy in the morning, but he remembered her as he left her, with a hole in the back of her head, and a splatter of blood and brain behind her. Foggily, he recalled her saying something sarcastic before his dream tugged him in another direction, to Randall or Julie or Evan or one of his other frequent subjects. He was surprised because he didn’t expect to think of her again. Pulling the trigger on her was straightforward – even easy. It was also the sad final result of pragmatism, not passion. He thought that meant he was done with her. Some part of him – some part hidden deep down in his psyche – annoyingly disagreed. By the time the camp had been broken, and he had taken his usual seat behind the wheel of the Sienna, he was eager to think about anything else. Jimmy passed by the window, shooting him a smile on the way to his Ram truck. “I’ll be right behind you, mano,” Jimmy said. Almost anything else, Eli realized. He was eager to think of almost anything else. “I said first light, guys!” he rapped on the outside of the door with his fist. “What I’m lookin’ at has gotta be the fourth or fifth. Andale!” |

Brandon did it again. He even promised himself he'd talk to her this time. He didn't forget but he was happy to let her forget he'd said he wanted to talk about something serious. It wasn't really a good time for it. He wasn't sure there would ever be a good time. Yet another thing there was no good time for was some intimacy. Two days with Willow right there next to him but still without her. He had needs that weren't a matter of survival even recent events couldn't dull those. A runaway libido was his prerogative as a twenty-two year old male. Come to think of it, he might even be twenty-three now. If it were the day he thought it was that would be in three days time though. He groaned in frustration as he slid behind her and put his arms around her. "You are sleeping in the van next time. The outdoors doesn't agree with you, especially while you're healing up. Yoy can the blanket to yourself, I'll be okay on the ground even without it. Especially without you elbowing me in the gut. Probably brought that on myself though." he grumbled. She'd tossed and turned all night just like before, and just like the night before his busy hands might have been a factor. He had it on good authority they had a mind of their own while he was asleep, probably went somewhere they weren't welcome. "Let's try to get some sleep on the road." he said pulling himself away reluctantly. ... Brandon collected the charcoal from their firepit before they buried it, informing the others it coukd be used to filter water. There were a few bottles now they knew not to drink from as well as a few with water they filtered and purified last night. It didn't taste so good but it was free of anything that would harm them. The last night's conversation was kept benign depending on how seriously anyone took video games or sport. Nolan was pretty cool for a college kid. Brandon had a hard time getting along with a lot of the ones he met, though admittedly he didn't give them much of a chance. There was an element of insecurity around them since he never went to college himself, it made him self-conscious. Nolan clearly wasn't the kind who got high on the smell of his own shit. Conversation was sparce in the van with sore feelings and sleepy heads. Nobody broached the subject of yestrday's events, just like last night and that suited Brandon just fine. Maybe the way for them to get past this was to simply let it be. It wasn't long, less than an hour, before they saw some promising signs. Literally signs. Restaurants, stores, gas stations. A goid chance fir some scavenging. Rotters too but so long as everyone stayed sharp, kept close and used their heads, rotters could be dealt with. They were all along S Lincoln Ave. "Look alive, we've got work to do." he said for the sake of those who weren't paying attention. The convoy took the exit to the north and were presented with a bounty of scavenging locations. A few restaurants, at least two gas stations as well as a few motels. Even though they were this close to actual beds they were still right to camp out since coming to this place last night would have been a mistake. It was crawling with rotters. A quick glance and Brandon judged there to be around thirty a little further down the road all spread out, probably more out of sight. Nothing new. "We need gas. Let's get Jen to take somebody with her on that bike and drive around a little, get these rotters following them north and out of the area. Just like back in Michigan when went looking for that missing team." Brandon suggested as the convoy came to a stop a far distance from rotter central. |

"Sounds good." Willow gave her agreement. It had worked pretty well the last time they used it. Emmett had been able to lure all the rotters away on his bike. They were able to control the rotters' movement without actually endangering themselves. It was a crafty little strategy they had used before. "I can ride with her as the distraction." Willow volunteered herself. "No offense, but you are not in the best shape to be speeding around on a bike right now." Nolan acted as the voice of reason. "I can do it." |

"Nope. On both counts. Sorry, Nolan but it's got to be a certified ass-kicker in case they run into trouble. It's just going to be the two of them out there, Jen's got the goods but she'll need somebody who can keep up in a fight. Emily would be better, she's a small burden and she's a veteran out here." Brandon said as delicately as possible. Nolan was still suffering the effects of malnutrition and he'd been holed up in a house the last two weeks, and before that he'd had the national guard for protection. He'd be better use and safer operating in a larger group. Brandon got that maybe he felt he needed to prove something but to Brandon the fact he was alive was proof enough there was no need to take unnecessary risks. |
